Title: Economy/trading/business games
Post by: Vibe on June 02, 2016, 10:03:55 am
Anyone else enjoys playing business/economy/trading management games? So basically little to no focus on combat, but rather just making your business prosperous.

The Guild 2 has to be one of my favourite games of all times, basically running a medieval family business that can later dive into politics as well. Lots of great features.
I recently also discovered Capitalism Lab (standalone expansion of Capitalism 2) - I basically just started playing it so I'm still learning the ropes, but I feel like the game has a lot of depth. Plus, 2D isometric graphics yay!

If any of you know any other cool games like this (I know of Anno series), feel free to mention them.

I loved playing Guild 2 initially, but it became stale very quickly in my opinion - all the different activities were very similar and repetitive.

If you want oldskool, give oldtimer/motor city a try, I played it like a year ago, although the UX is bad, but not an atrocity by todays standards.

More modern, I've heard offworld trading company is interesting ( http://store.steampowered.com/app/271240/ ), but I haven't had time to play it myself yet

The Guild has got to be one of my favourites too. No game is unfortunately even similar to it. Turning your family of fishcatchers into a medieval mafia thats oppressing the whole town and mybe even a nation.

You punks playing Guild alone  Get some friends and let hilarity ensue. My friend and his girlfriend fucked up mine business real good (they were rogues and I were good old carpenter) so I got them arrested. Trial was glorious. Think punishment was in some S&M dungeon of sorts. Crazy Germans and their games, that was one of the best multiplayer experiences I ever had.

But beware, it is worse than Civ and HoMM3 combined. Hours will pass and you won't even notice. It can suckwhen it comes to people with different schedules and commitments...

I felt like giving this a go. Any pointers on what release to play? Vanilla, pirates or renaissance? I have the GOG version, are there any must-have mods?

Renaissance, I would say. I didn't mod it though.

Definately Renaissance. Guild 2 is quite a broken and buggy game. Renaissance has the most recent fixes and has all the content of the others, plus some of its own. It will still be horribly buggy thou, despite the fixes.

Really? Last time I checked Renaissance was the broken and buggy one. That said even if I'm correct, Renaissance has a lot more stuff added to it which makes the game more interesting overtime. I remember after hearing the nerds I played with also had a the guild, we started using Hamachi and then later evolve to play the shit out of it. I can't wait for the Guild 3. Really it nice to hope for something similar, but I've never been able to find anything like the guild. Like chadz says it can grow a bit stale, but it has a system that is so unique that it's hard to find something like it. That is a rarity to find for me and is the sole reason everything months I find myself going back to the guild. There really is nothing else like it.
