Title: Plans for the Upcoming weeks
Post by: chadz on April 22, 2016, 08:57:48 pm
Apologies - some things went wrong in the last weeks, we messed up our timings here and there.

The original plan was to release a short video of our game, and our new name, beginning of April. We ran into some troubles, and lost a bit of time, and while trying to fix things panicky we got a bit unorganised

So, after getting our shit together, this is what's going to happen the next weeks:

Somewhen next week, the new name is announced, with a teaser video.

Next week, Sunday, May 1st, 6pm to 8pm GMT, we will have a combat test with our inital backers (all Scholars on the Forum) on a european server. (It's not bias for EU, but we need good pings in the office to get proper results for our test - NA will come soon as well) We will let you know in time where and how to get the client. The combat you've seen in our last video is not relevant any more - we made some huge changes after having a collective epiphany. Most people who tried it so far were very pleased with it, I personally love it, and I think most of you (definitely not all of you, it's not cRPG) will be pleasantly surprised - I will not reveal more at this point .

This test will help us figure out: how you like the combat, if the game runs performant on different PCs, if it will crash the servers, or the clients, if it will burn houses down, if the network code works (it might need some improvements), etc etc. The gamemode will be a simple battle mode, as we want to test combat only. It's important to test with a limited amount of people to not overload our servers yet.

Now, depending on how that test goes, the sunday after we will try another test with backers, or possibly more or all members from the cRPG community. It depends on what we want to test - performance, combat, network. We start with timed tests because it makes it easier for us to test specific things that need testing, and to get enough players for those timeslots.

Again, apologies for our miscommunication - I promise we'll try and do better. For now we're very happy to be able to show you a small yet polished part of our game next week, and we're very excited about the upcoming sunday. We have a shitton of work ahead of us for that, so: "see you in 9 days" to the scholars, and "stay tuned, it might be your turn soon" to all the others. Exciting times ahead :)

May 1st :( :( :( :( that's a holiday... May make less people join, plenty of people using the bank holiday for travelling.

But nice to see that stuff is coming along, can't wait to see how people react to the test.

Idk... has a certain ring to it. Like the Song of Ice and Fire books: "Winds of Winter", and "Dream of Spring".

What on earth would you want in Stuttgart?
Not take a train?

Then you can always just not take a plane from Berlin. More comfortable.

There is no better way of showing your devotion to God than spending whole Sunday afternoon and good portion of evening frantically mashing buttons in attempt to banish all dem filthy muslems to the rotting cave they came from and retain the glorious Holy land for at least 20 minutes or about three days in game time (until first server crash methinks).

Ofcourse chadz loves the game itself, why would you spend so many months asking for monies cause you want to make your "dream" game.... and then not love it :P

"Very pleased" indeed doesnt sound very enthusiastic imo. Perhaps Donkey Crew its overlords were very pleased?
Aside from that, i wonder how many things chadz promised that he would put in the game, will still be in the end product.. as he is relient on his "publisher/sponsor" for a yay or nay ? I can hardly believe they would have Donkey Crew do their thing, without their "moneytree" having a say in it.

Jambi got me. Every of his suspicions and implications are true. I do in fact not love it, very pleased actually means "the better choice at gunpoint", it actually has no features and all, and it's because our publisher/sponsor doesn't like gameplay, they think it's better to make something more like candy crush, because stats show that sells better.

Alas! My plan foiled, so close before scamming people into early access! I tip my fedora to you, you bested me with your intelligence.

Sponsor basically pays for advertisement but donkey crew isn't big enough to get that, I'm pretty sure it's publisher who gets his cut.

Thats what i thought.

+ In one of their video's, one of the devs (?) answered a question.. and said they would most likely have voip thru steam.  If they are so certain the game will be on steam, they must have a publisher that already has a good standing with Steam.

Usually indie games first go trough Steam Greenlight etc, to see if their legit or not... especially after the Dayz thing that happened. being in beta for years and still broken.

lol so salty.
Implying i have suspicions and implications. Those were legit questions i had, without any intend of "triggering" you.
And lets be fair.. ofcourse you would say you Love your own game. If you would say its decent or bad or whatever, it wouldnt be great advertisement  :P
Being all silent to your backers about changes in the original plan/team, and not letting out regular monthly updates like you promised.. ofcourse will make people ponder about whats going on..and what they can further expect.. quite natural reaction. Its of your own design, not mine.

Good. I always like Candy Crush way better than Native and cRPG combined.

Aye, Candy Crush probably pleased alot more players, then melee battlegrounds ever will. lets be realistic :P

it actually has no features and all, and it's because our publisher/sponsor doesn't like gameplay, they think it's better to make something more like candy crush, because stats show that sells better.

Because it does. I'm truly amazed at depth of fremium elements in mobile games. If only they spent half as much time on actual game mechanics... but still hats off to the dude who came with idea originally. Layers and layers of daily quests, super offers you can't refuse and free stuff you unlock by essentially doing something we get paid for in real life. Either you pop tens of thousands of dollars/euros in game store and "win" game in few hours or you spend months working as Mechanical Turk, but this time around Amazon doesn't give you nickels for your effort.

I'm afraid Leshma is correct in this case though

Also, maybe we would make more money with a creative candy crush clone. Maybe we would make more money creating a software for BTC market predictions. Or as business analysts. Or as as strippers. Or as janitors. Right now, actually, we would definitely make more money if we were janitors.

But who gives a shit. Never had so much fun in my life working, wouldn't trade it for anything in the world, despite working more than your average foxconn employee.

chadz, are Devolver Digital your publisher?
Nope
I am actually the publisher. We're renaming from M:BG to M:BG, except this time the M stands for Magic. That's right, all the things you love about historically inspired low-fantasy games will be replaced with flying carpets, casting spells, and dragons. All armors are currently being replaced with 4k texture robes, which come in a variety of stylish colors and alluring cuts. Don't worry about protection though, all you have to do is hold block for an omnidirectional mana shield. There will still be a variety of weapons of course. For 1H there will be wands (dual wielding!) and for 2H and Polearms there are plenty of staves to choose from. Knowing the cRPG community like we do the inclusion of upgrading equipment is mandatory. However this is a world of magic, and as such all items may be enchanted with any of the game's spell effects. Just think, you could create your own [+11 Rat Smashing Rod of Thorns]!

Combat will still be the heart and soul of of Magic:Battlegrounds so don't panic. The team is still hard at work creating the most innovative wizard combat system that has ever been released. The basics of combat in Magic will consist of inputting a series of keys in a quick time event in order to cast spells. Obviously complex spells will require a longer chain to be input, and one wrong key stroke will cause the entire chain to be broken. With practice and patience any player will be able to utilize high ranking spells but only a true magus will be able to effectively use spells like meteor shower. Our intent with this system is to create combat mechanics that are easy to learn but hard to master.

Above I mentioned the blocking system, and while at a glance it may seem overpowered we have developed checks to prevent combat devolving into turtles hiding behind force fields.  First, as it is a mana shield, the duration of your active block will be limited to your mana pool. Additionally any damage absorbed by your mana shield will be deplete your mana, eventually causing your shield to break and throwing your character to the ground, stunning them. Investing points into the shielding skill, or equiping items enchanted with shielding magics will increase the resistance of your mana shield and decrease your stun if it breaks.

In addition to active blocking with mana shields the team has also been hard at work developing a countering system for intercepting inbound spells. Currently two mechanics exist for spell countering: reflection and negation. Reflection will allow a wizard or magus to redirect an incoming projectile, wave, or beam spell by quickly activating their mana shield at the moment of impact. With proper timing reflection can be used to redirect projectiles off of spherical mana shields on varying trajectories, from oblique angles to hostile projectiles to their casters. Negation focuses on using offensive spells to cancel other offensive spells. To negate an incoming spell the defending caster must cast an offensive spell of their own which is elementally superior and theoretically opposed to the incoming projectile. Elemental superiority is relatively simple, water defeats fire, etc.. Theoretical opposition is determined by which school of magic a spell is from. Of the seven major schools of magic (divination is excluded as neutral) each school has two compatible schools and two incompatible schools. If two spells from incompatible schools connect they will cancel each other out. In spell negation you can intercept a hostile projectile with an elementally superior spell from an opposing school to over power your enemy's attack with one of your own. Doing so successfully will dispel the incoming attack while your counter spell continues forward. Additionally spells from compatible schools and of similar elements can be combine by teammates to generate devastating attacks, which will be very useful in our wizard siege game mode.

That's all the information you get for now, consider it a reward for finally figuring out the meaning of chadz's cryptic posts and the silence from the dev team. Expect the next dev blog soon where we'll cover our progress converting the game to our voxel based MMO survival sandbox engine.

In the above, you mention seven major schools of magic, but i only count 6 in the above example. Your spell + 2 compatible + 2 incompatible + neutral divination. Is this deliberate?
I apologize, I worded the first post poorly so let me clarify. What I meant to say was that each school of magic is aligned with two other schools and opposed by two other schools. For example the school of Evocation is aligned with Conjuration (both can create matter) and also with Illusion (both can create energy). However, Conjuration is not aligned with Illusion, as one deals with physical objects and the other with hallucinations. It's worth noting that not being aligned is not the same as being opposed. An example of opposing schools are Conjuration (creating life, positive energy) and Necromancy (using death, negative energy).

Determining if schools are aligned or opposed (compatible and incompatible) relates to the principles and methods by which a school practices magic. Different schools may have similar magics, but the method by which the end result is achieved defines a school. The school of Enchantment uses subtle magical manipulations to alter the properties of existing objects; these methods oppose those of Evocation and Conjuration which favor forceful creation of things.

There are 8 schools of magic, but divination (excluding greater) is just basic functional magic ie: magical identification, detecting magic, reading magics. Greater divination could potentially be aligned with/against the other schools, but it's quite difficult to oppose it beyond semantics and as such it is left out of the web. While lesser divination constitutes basic wizardly skills, greater divination and its combat spells act as a neutral form of basic damage attack. Obviously if greater divination spells were left at their true power in the game it would break the negation mechanic, so greater divination spells will be weaker in raw damage than spells from the 7 other schools. However an experienced magus can still use divination in combat to great effectiveness.

Will there be tab-targeting to ensure all spells are performed on lock?
Or is it all manual aim?
Or is it like Dark Souls where you can choose between lock-on or unlocked combat?

It's actually turn based

Now you're getting ridiculous,

He clearly stated that you can intercept inbound spells with spells of your own, it's a core mechanic of the game.

That's because there are inter-turns. It goes like this: Player 1 - casts spell; inter-turn - spell halfway to target; Player 2 - can intercept/negate or dogde the spell.
Every player also has different movesets, just like figures on a chessboard and draws cards every inter-turn that changes his blood pH levels, which in turn affects what kind of spells are effective, for the next turn.

Or is it like Dark Souls where you can choose between lock-on or unlocked combat?

I lost my 300 word explanation of this when the forums went down hours ago so let me try and compress and paraphrase it here.

All projectiles are manually aimed and there is no targeting, however there are attacks that can track targets. Summoned beings (spirits, shades, sprites, elementals to name a few) are sentient to some degree, and as such can be used as more time/mana consuming homing variants of regular spells. For a spell like fireball the summoned variant is orb of fire, which is a low level fire elemental. While there will be homing variants for each element type not all schools of magic will have homing variants for each element. Size, element, and school will all affect the speed at which magic projectiles travel. Generally large, high surface area projectiles will travel slower than more aerodynamically shaped ones. By nature larger, more powerful spells will travel slower than their lower ranking counterparts. Magics that travel through the ground or mediums other than the air will have different base speeds also.

Golem has confused Magic: Battlegrounds with its sister title, Magic: Battlegrounds Advanced Tactics HD, which will be available on the iOS/Android app store.

In M:BG dodging and evasive maneuvers can be used to dodge spells. Dodging can be broken down into 3 archetypes: Teleportation (longest range, slowest to execute, ethereal for duration, sizeable mana cost), Sliding (medium range, faster to execute, remain physical, small mana cost), and diving out of the way (short range, instant, relies on constitution and agility, no mana used). While diving out of the way will require no mana to use it will be limited by your frail wizard's body, and the sudden physical exertion will cause you to suffer an asthma attack if you attempt to roll too many times for your constitution level.

Now, depending on how that test goes, the sunday after we will try another test with backers, or possibly more or all members from the cRPG community. It depends on what we want to test - performance, combat, network. We start with timed tests because it makes it easier for us to test specific things that need testing, and to get enough players for those timeslots.

Let's hope for some meth magic so stuff get's done in time. But seriously, using "cmp" instead of the first name in the todo sounds fishy.

This?
Quote from: Wikipedia
A Hebrew term or surname meaning "the one sent by the community" (from the acronym for "shaliach tzibbur"), used to describe the member of the community leading prayers. The term can be used either for a regular lay member of the community leading prayers at the moment or for the "cantor" leading prayers on a regular basis.

or this?
Quote from: Wikipedia
A term of endearment in German-speaking countries, comparable to "honey" or "darling" in English

I suspect the latter considering it's fin we are talking about

Cmp should train fin to call him champ then.

Might be possible as long as nobody tells him that "chimp" is pretty close as well... Whoops...
