Title: The Culling
Post by: JasonPastman on March 16, 2016, 10:51:22 am
It's basically a punk/DIY version of the Hunger Games.  Been no lifing this over the past few days and am very happy with my $15 steam purchase. Also won my fist game with 1 hp which was super epic.  The devs are also very active so far.

Incredible but.....I just watched that scene a few mins ago, before that I listened to the Culling of Stratholme music.  8-)

Anyone that can compare this to h1z1: King of the Kill? I feel like it would be a waste if I got this when h1z1 can quench the Battle Royale thirst.

Though people do praise The Culling devs, while h1z1 devs have been mostly crap.

I'm not buying it until they add more maps.

1 map is not enough imo.

More maps and matches with more players (also team based) are the most requested features on their Trello, I'm guessing they're gonna add it as soon as they can.

What they should do is turn it into a game about warring tribes of Africa or some such, with the occasianal firearm left behind by colonist parties. Would be way more fun.

I wish they added maps with more traps and maybe wild life too just like in the Hunger Games movies.

Spice it up a bit.

Yeah that'd be awesome. Right now it looks very similar to other battle royale games (arma 3, h1z1), they could spice it up a bit and make it fresh with stuff like that - interactive maps.

Imagine this with Dark Souls-like combat and maps + monsters.

Can you still craft or you just collect all the shit?

We can only hope someday a company makes a game like that where it doesn't look like a quick cash grab. Until now, they've been just doing "small" games like battle royal/hunger games and/or zombie infested survival games where the ai is easy to make since they are dumb.

Wish they put more effort and content in them.

To me, crafting is not a good game concept. It's just a roundabout and time-consuming way of making things that are actually useful through the gathering of useless materials. I'd rather have that system as streamlined as possible to concentrate all attention on exploration, awareness and combat. If anything, the way The Culling does things seems to validate my view. Crafting is extremely simple, but you still need to put yourself at risk and explore to get better equipment.

In a Dark Souls-esque arena survival game, I guess you would have chests protected by monsters and traps and that would be the only method to get better equipment, plus drops.

I think this game has potential. Depends how it evolves further, but considering it just came out in early access I would say it looks solid and the devs seem to be active.

It has a small price and better combat than H1Z1 so that is a plus.

Yeah it seems to be further along than h1z1 is after what, 1-2 years?

Seems like even Ark has a hunger games game separate from the original client.

It's free however.

So I've been playing this game for the last week and I have to say, it's pretty bloody fun for what it is.

Not only is it extremely cheap (I actually got my money back by selling cosmetic items I won LOL), it's really fun. I like how it's more melee oriented and skill based unlike H1Z1 or Arma where they revolve around guns and long distance fights. Perk system is nice and you can make some pretty fun builds that revolve around them if you get bored with your current build.

I've had a lot of laughs with my friends.

Fun game, worth it for it's price. Hope they put out some bigger maps for more people (and bigger teams) soon.

I have only seen people play it on twitch, its pretty fun looking even with one map right now.

It is.

The one thing I like about it is that you don't get those frustrating scenarios where you get insta killed from being backstabbed or from half the map away. There's quite some weapons, it's not ranged weaponry heavy and the heaviest hitting ranged weapons are hard to get and have very few bullets. This and the perk to reduce damage from ranged weaponry makes significant impact on the time it takes to kill someone. This means you'll almost always have the chance to fight back and win, even if the enemy gets the jump on you. None of the 'i see him first = win' nonsense.

Still strong in 2v2s. You get stunned in that scenario you're almost dead if not dead.

There's still some weapon/item/perk balance issues, but not in the area of something being absolutely OP, but rather than some choices (like bludgeon weapons) being worse than others..

From devs:
Quote
Thanks for the feedback. We are continuing to balance and tune ... well, everything... It's early access, after all.
We have some changes targeted to address some of these issues (and many others) which need to go through our own internal testing process. We've been pretty fast and loose to this point, but will be slowing down our patching schedule to allow for more complex changes and iterations to be properly tested.
Expect to hear more about it before the next patch. We'll need to be be flexible to address critical, game breaking issues, but the current plan is targeting a patch every 2 weeks, putting the next one somewhere in the Week of the 28th.

A bunch of really great balance changes and fixes in the next patch (today):

Just goes to show how much the devs are listening to community. I hope the next patch is a content patch.
