Title: i5 6600k or i7 6700k?

Seems the only real difference is that i7 has hyperthreading which does not really matter for gaming much, is the i7 really worth the extra money or nah

Generally speaking, I just get an i7. i5 is fine, i7 is cooler.

Look at some reviews for what kind of performance you can expect in use. Like this one:


i7 has a definite advantage in heavy duty applications like rendering while i5 is almost as good for gaming use. This is especially true when the game is poorly optimized.

For real though, gratz man, always a good feeling when your financial situation improves ever so slightly. I just paid off one of my larger loans in one fell swoop after saving up for a bit, and now I feel like blowing all the rest of my money to "reward myself for being financially-smart" even though I've got plenty more to pay off. The moment I give in and buy something is the moment I contradict myself and fail at life.

decided to be smart and use the money i saved buying the 6600k to get some DDr4 ram and a nice cooler so i can overclock the i5 and still save on cash

Which is not the smart decision when buying a Xeon cpu gives you an i7 for the money of an i5, except the integrated gfx unit which you not gonna use as a gamer anyway. :P

I looked into this.

6600k offers DDR4 support as well as being able to reach higher clock speeds than your CPU

all yours offers really is hyperthreading and a bit more cache which is good in a workstation environment, but in the long run 6600k offers more for gaming

Well if the cooler doesn't turn on it's the cooler. If it doesn't boot it might be the processor, only way to tell is trying a different CPU on the same mobo.

You can probably bend thta pin back into place without much effort. Just make sure to leave no visible evidence that you tampered with it just in case it has other issues/you can't get it back fully. Even if you use pliers on it and scratch it up a bit I'd imagine that you could still say "it came to me that way" and get a replacement.

Finally got the last piece, my video card today :)

I am beyond happy with this, games look and perform incredibly now. Even with air cooling I can go from 3.5 stock speed up to 4.4 ghz without going over 45C while gaming.
