Title: Viking round shield unplayable in 1st person
Post by: Drunken_sailor on February 20, 2016, 04:06:58 pm
I know its probably not a huge issue because no one really plays much 1st person, but I do in DTV and occasionally in battle

You cant see over the top, any way to lower the shield so you could at least see where your opponent is moving to?

examples
with shield

with kite shield

No way, it's so big. I think it's used to stop the arrows, not to fight.

Want a really big shield? Want to see through it? Make a hole. Otherwise, don't have as big of a shield. If you for some reason didn't know, you can also lower/raise your arm to change the position of the shield. People these days want everything impossible.

The problem is that the shields in M&B are probably modeled as having the character's forearm attached to the shield and the hand grasping a handle near the edge.  In that condition the shield could not be lowered or extended outwards very much.  You would get exactly the same situation irl that you see in 1st person.

Actual melee shields had a hand grip at the center of the shield and it was depressed into the shield with a protective boss on the outside to protect the hand.  This way the hand was at the center of gravity of the shield and it could be easily held without fighting gravity or tipping of the shield.  The shield could be used for bashing as in a punch or extended towards the enemy to block low blows without exposing your head or shoulders too much.  With a shield hooked to the forearm, this can't be done.

no one really plays much 1st person,

Excu-fucking-se me?

I play all the time in first person, round shields are the worst, followed by polearms, not much you can do about it, you either suck it up or use another shield.

Personally I think throwing weapons covering half or so of your screen when they get stuck in your face is a bigger issue.
