Title: question about shields
Post by: Wrenaq_Lars on May 28, 2011, 12:18:26 pm
does the size of the shield really matter cos the buckler is tiny and I remember when playing as an archer I kept on hitting the guys buckler when aiming around it.

The buckler usually catchs more arrows than a horseman/knightly heather/kite shield... It's coverage should be 0 imo.

It matters, even as it seems the buckler catches more then it should, the users of bucklers have to adjust angle more often to counter incoming dangers.

So timing what to block from where is of the essence.

Also, bearer of buckler have more shield skill.

Yeah, skills matters too...

9 shield skill + the round buckler + skill = you can catch some arrows

It's fine.

Even with all the shield skill you want, a buckler wasn't supposed to stop arrows at all... Given it's mass, it's nearly like if you tried catching an arrow with your bare hands.

There's one thing that is worth knowing, it's that all round shields have ghost coverage, except the steel shield maybe. Other shields usually have slightly less coverage than what their model suggests, except above the shield. afaik the head is allways protected.

not true anymore for all shields since the last 2 patches.

pre .222, i agree there was not a chance that anyone could get a headshot f.e. at a huscarl, meanwhile i got those on regular base. In the last week 4 times. Sounds not often, still they make a f.... headshot at a huscarl carrier. I got also Bolts which went through my shield now and the angle from where i get shot and as well hit by sword has been reduced.

And as far as i know most shields got a hp nerf or reduction in cover or body armor compared to .220.

I can confirm. Happens a lot nowadays. However, I also wonder if it's related to other issues that have been happening lately i.e. attacks going through blocks, overheads passing through your opponents body, etc.

I'm sorry for the wrong info, I didn't played last week (I don't how it's even possible ), I never saw anyone getting headshot'd while having their shield up. I think lag can help a lot with those things, and client load did increase in all the recent patches (new content) so it could be that.

And why i have to pull so much arrows out of my legs?
Yeah, you can catch a few, but there is no 100% chance to get all of it.

It seems like there are 2 problems with shields as it is:

So, if you are playing as a shielder you should go for the steel buckler. And get a lot of shield skill to make your shield immortal and give you lots of coverage.

It seems like there are 2 problems with shields as it is:
  • Skill seems to have more effect on shield coverage than the actual size of the shield.
  • Size on shields does not follow the model size at all. (A buckler the size of an axe blade can block just ask well as a heater shield.)

So, if you are playing as a shielder you should go for the steel buckler. And get a lot of shield skill to make your shield immortal and give you lots of coverage.

Well, i doubt the parts with the "immortal" and "lots of coverage".
Currently it breaks really fast (buckler has the stats of the old plate covered round shield now), sometimes in only two axe hits, and for the coverage you need the right angle and a bit luck.

And again, a real shield is not a static object, like ingame. That is why there is the force field, to simulate some kinds of shield movements.

I have a bucklar and i def get hit by more arrows then if I swap to any form of a round. Husc lasts a bit longer to axe hits but swords the bucklar is great. So it is a decision on what you are fighting. IF the map has an army of ranged the little buck is not going to cut it.
