Saw a few peeps in NA1 recently rolling with a Light Xbow on horseback. Looks like an interesting build, though is it as gimped as HA?
If you have any suggestions, post builds below. I formulated something like this:
STF Char (lv 35)
STR 21
AGI 21
Pole WPF 100
XBow WPF 142
WM 7
ATH 5
RID 6
IF 7
PS 7
Light Xbow, 2x Steel Bolts, and a Svaerderstav or something like that, with medium-high armor and a courser.
Any suggestions?

Try not to get too mad / sad when your horse gets killed instantly by ranged weapons.

Eh, I'm not too mopey about that. The horse is more of a means to an end, which is whiffing behind enemy lines by running down any unaware archer dumb enough to stand in the open and backstab/shoot at plate crutchers with impunity. After it dies, I'll be more or less a regular Xbower.

I'd say max out Athletics and riding instead of IF. That way you can steal every horse once yours is dead, and you can use armored horses => your horse will die less to ranged and you can deal damage to unaware lightly armored archers. And for extra damage, you can put the leftover IF into horse-archery to reduce the mounted ranged damage penalty (2% more damage per HA skill).
Edit:
You can also have a Dragoon build. A pure foot crossbowman build, but with 0, 2 or 4 riding skill, and use mule/sumpter/rouncey.
But it is more of an infantry support than "following cavalry" build because of your low speed.
Edit2: A masterwork light crossbow and steel bolts are a big advantage, +7 damage.

Now THAT is some hilarious shit. I really enjoy the rare sight of someone taking an MW arb on horseback, moving to the back of the enemy mass, shooting them in the back and fleeing to reload on foot.

I enjoy 18/24 myself, (lvl 36 though)
Strength:18
Agility:24
One Handed:118
Crossbow:150
Weapon Master:8
Athletics:8
Riding:8
Iron Flesh:1
Horse Archery:4
Power Strike:6
could probably be better, but HX isnt so effective, and when dehorsed (archers/other cav tend to target you) just switch to melee or keep shooting and fast reloading. Switching to 2h wpf in a bit.
8 riding to outrun people, I use a +3 padded warhorse.

I would go for medium armor and AS MUCH AGI as possible. So Actually something like 12:30/33, just for pure hx!
