Title: Patreon hacked - why?
Post by: Ikarus on October 03, 2015, 02:10:03 pm
I´d like to know more about this
http://observer.com/2015/10/patreon-data-dump-what-the-public-can-now-see/

I would like to know why. "Just because there was a backdoor open" is no reason. Read stuff about "Gamergate", then suddenly "focus on furry artists", then "hipster founding paradise", but this shit is even more unclear than a desert map with sandstorm.

From your own link:

“Looks like this Vince guy might be a hacker who got lucky,” Mr. Cabetas wrote in an email. “He’s bragging publicly and has left enough of a public trace he’ll likely get caught unlike the AshleyMadison hackers.” The Observer previously reported on what appears to be known about the hacker so far.

Just because he could seems like a reasonable explanation.

Know your meme can maybe help you understand http://knowyourmeme.com/memes/sites/patreon

Patreon is applying its own ToS with political bias, basically.

And also yes, "just because there was a backdoor open" is perhaps the best reason there is. Security matters. Now, a white hat would have just told them, but the hacker in question probably didn't like Patreon for the reason highlighted above.
