Title: Finally getting my first smartphone, need halp!
Post by: Ikarus on September 20, 2015, 05:22:05 pm
So after all those years, I finally give in  Fact is that nobody around me uses normal phones anymore (even them refugees lel). I´m the only one who communicates via "SMS", I miss a lot of talks on family/friend WhatsApp-groups and I still have barely an idea how to handle smartphones and/or tablets...as a bachelor for media technology.

It´s finally time to say bye-bye to my trusty Nokia6303
(click to show/hide)
and move on to one of them smartphones...and I need your help!

All I need is a simple Smartphone with good hardware and durable batteries. I neither need a fancy cam, nor a lot of data storage. The criterias are
- reliable
- good batteries
- reasonably priced
- not too many fancy addons
- no outdoor smartphone (because they´re fugly imo)

I already have 1,2 people whom I can ask for advice, but I´d like to hear your opinion aswell, because the more, the merrier.

What brands do you prefer? What should I keep in mind when comparing smartphones? Should I get a new one or a used one? Should I get them online or from a store?

Thanks in advance!

this one isn't bad, but u should also check some from Huawei, they are pretty good for the price they cost

Sony Z2 or Z3
Huawei Mate 7 (this one is a bit big)
LG G2 (I'm using this model)
OnePlus One (if you can find it in Austria)

They shouldn't be too expensive.

iPhones have average battery life but are top notch at everything else. Very expensive, just like Samsung Galaxy S and Note series.

Just get a contract for a cell phone and get the newest Samsung Galaxy S6 Edge.

Also don't do the same mistake I did and drop ur phone 1 week after u get it and crack the screen.

I had an iphone 4s for a long time and I really like it, changed to 5c I didnt like it as much and dropped ito ff a roller coaster on accident (l0l). I recently bought another 16gb 4s on ebay for 72$. THey are good if you can find one for a reasonable price (aka not 200$) the 8gb ones are cheaper and you can probably find one pretty easily. Like all iphones the battery gets old after about 2 years tho

Using for nearly 3 years a HTC One S (M8) and I am very satisfied with it.
That it's even working for more than 2 years is already a sign of quality, I guess.

It went shit after a year or so for me. Unresponsive buttons, slow processing of everything basically, completely fucked. Not that I care actually since I get smartphones for free from work lol, but yeah. I now have an iPhone that I basically use only for sms/texting and phone calls :D
My brother bought a OnePlus One though and is happy with it.

I had the same problem few months ago. My beloved E71 died. To be honest i still don't like smartphones...

My criteria was:

-Size

Seriously it's a phone i should be able to carry  it in my pocket.  All my friends were using Samsung so i bought a Samsung Galaxy A3. Probably i don't use %90 of the phone but it seems ''ok'' for me. Simple things SMS - Phone call.  I know it's a waste but i couldn't find anything else besides smartphones. Otherwise i would get myself an E72

Just buy something from 2-3 years ago second-hand. You can get great used phones below 100 euros because there are so much suckers that buy the newest shit. Often people get rid of phones because the batteries are bad, but a new battery costs like 15 euros, so switch it out and your phone is as good as new. It being your first smartphone, you probably won't need a 600 euro phone with all the newest crap. You might have a few sucker friends that buy those, they might have some good old phones.

Like all iphones the battery gets old after about 2 years tho

Actually this is a truth with modifications. I have an undying 3g that I got in 2008, so it's 7 years old and still has a functioning battery that can last couple of days with very light use. (But no buttons that work. Need to plug it in to smth to light up the display) I didn't understand how and why though, but I researched a bit and I think it's because I always charged it from my comp with USB. It has much lower (and slower) charging current. Also it's recommended to not top up and especially completely drain the battery too often.

So try not to drain out the battery completely, and charge with usb when u can, and your battery will last for years.

Start with something like a samsung galaxy S3 (Not the mini version just the older version).

It's "cheap", reliable and most of all android not apple.

Preferably something with a Qualcomm snapdragon is best, Exynos if samsung.

I strongly recommend the Moto G. Cheap, great display, has all you need, good battery (for a smartphone, still means you plug it in every night mostly), pure android. Also I like the style and size of it a thousand times more than those fancy phones.

I have generation 1, it has a rather bad camera, other than that it's really great.

I have been using Nexus 4 for a while and I am quite happy with it. Nexus 5 and Nexus 6 have already been announced after it, but tbh, pretty much all you will get with the two latter will be bigger screens. Also, remember that the Nexus phones immediately get all system updates, as they are Google's pure Android phones without any prior customization in place.

This said, gratz to Ikarus and Xside. I really thought you guys were an extinct breed :D

This one is my first smartphone too. I got it only after my dinosaur of a phone died in agony.

I got a cheap Chinese copy of a Samsung note2 for about £120 2 years ago off amazon. Couple bugs but it works perfectly for my needs and has a great battery life. Fine for netflix, reading books, browsing etc. Chinese copies are probably a mixed bag but you can get them for 1/3 or 1/4 price of the real thing

Same situation as OP. My trusty old nokia is about to retire.

MY father keeps ordering smartphones from http://www.geekbuying.com/ (http://www.geekbuying.com/) for various familymembers, all kinds of odd brands and some known ones.
Its fairly cheap, and you get them 3-4 weeks after ordering. They put at "value $20" on all of the outgoing packages, so 50% of the time you will not have to pay any VAT or similar taxes.

It's "cheap", reliable and most of all android not apple.
If you do this, get the later GT-I9305 model. 2GB RAM, 4G, etc. Got this after dropping my S2, works perfectly for my needs (phone, reading, internet browsing and chatting).

OP asked for good battery life. Most of phones mentioned have average or poor battery life. Saying how he'll put it in plug every night isn't valid argument, that is something iphone users say because their phones have laughable battery capacity.

Get smartphone with good battery life and use it like average person does, it will last you three days. Almost like that Nokia you were using.

Nexus 5 is great but battery life is poor. Nexus 6 has good battery life but it is a bit big (when it comes to big phones I'm same as with TV screens, bigger the better).

Edit: Samsung have great hardware but software is obnoxious. Only those who never used anything other than Samsung's Touchwiz think it is decent, but that's because they never used better software.

I'd suggest not getting a brand new one at the moment, they're unbelievably expensive at least in England. 64GB S6 Edge is £60+ per month, what the fuck.

Also if you go for older models avoid Samsung like the plague, their phones have a bad habit of failing after a year or two due to bloatware and shit RAM.

Someone recommended a Moto G. That thing was amazing value for money. Moto X was excellent too at a bit higher cost.

If it was me, I'd get a HTC One (M7). Best phone I ever had, I have an M8 at the moment and had a Note 3 and a Z2 in between and the M7 was still better since the M8 is basically the same phone.

Z2 was also pretty good but the flaps were shit and kept coming off making the waterproofing pointless plus it looks shit with holes in the sides of it.

I've been hearing good things about some of the Microsoft Lumia phones of late but I haven't actually used one myself so it's a toughie. On the plus side they're surprisingly cheap to get SIM free.

In conclusion, get a HTC One (M7).

I buy mine through a company that sells pre-owned phones that appear 'as new'. Meaning they replace the battery and the front  (if necessary) with brand new hardware, and you save at least a third of the price of a new one. Never buy any of the newest series, the discontinued ones are always in a sensible price range. Recycling older models is also ecological rationality.

If you like me won't use your phone for much else but calling and messaging and a bit of browsing (perhaps the occasional picture) Iphones are a pretty good choice quality-wise; they may not be as customizable as Android but they are sturdy and have a usually neat and minimalistic design both inside and out, and decent support.

Iphone 4 is really cheap these days and pretty good bang for the buck. It's smaller and fatter than the IP5 but it is only really noticeable when you browse and if you come from a non-smartphone it won't matter at all. Its front and back are made from glass which is pretty but means it's decently heavy compared to newer phones and pretty hard to scratch, but it can break if you drop it wrongly. Its specifications should be more than enough for any casual user.

The IP5 is made from anodised aluminium, which is very light and looks great and is incredibly sturdy (you can run it over with a car and it saved a guy's life in the US by intercepting a bullet). They also made the entire case from one single piece, which makes it even sturdier, but especially the black one can get small scratches pretty easily. But you'll want to keep either in a leather cover, anyway. I think the IP5 is the most elegant phone on the market, appearance-wise. Both phones also have great processors, and cameras and really good touch displays etc. but be aware that only the IP5 has 4G.

Many of my friends swear to plastic phones, though.

I have a Samsung Galaxy S4 and I'm pretty happy with it. It holds a decent charge and can do just about anything you'd need a smart phone to do. More importantly, no matter what phone you get, make sure you get a decent case for it. I have an otter box. It adds a bit of bulk to your phone but I've dropped this a bunch of times and my phone has not suffered any damage what so ever. It also has a built in screen protector so I never have to worry about changing it. Good luck and just buy one you like.

but be aware that only the IP5 has 4G.

Not necessarily true. It's only compatible with some carrier's 4G due to different signal frequencies.

Post by: Angantyr on September 21, 2015, 04:59:26 pm
Sure, but it can still use 4G which I'm not aware is the case with IP4. I may be wrong, not a phone enthusiast whatsoever.
Title: Re: Finally getting my first smartphone, need halp!
Post by: Mr_Oujamaflip on September 21, 2015, 05:04:16 pm
I worked for Vodafone at the time, the only carrier in England that could use 4G on the iPhone 5 was EE which used the 1800mhz band if I remember correctly.

I'm using 4G right now on my current IP5 and I've been able to use it anywhere I've been in the country. But yes, the coverage is different in other nations but probably generally improved since launch.

I do have my Samsung Note 2 (151,1 x 80,5 x 9,4 Millimeter) since 2.5 years now and it looks like new, no problems at all besides from common aging problems such as weaker batterie power and tiny screen scratches.

Post by: Ikarus on September 21, 2015, 08:40:34 pm
whoa, thanks for this big fat amount of hints and help!  8-)

status report:
Today I spent sorta 1 and 1/2 hours in a bigger Saturn store to check out different phones and also looked up some tests on a pc which was standing nearby. Choosing a smartphone turned out to be more difficult than I expected since these things can get pretty expensive and I realized that I actually do have standards

The only phone which really caught my eye was the Sony z3 compact, but I don´t spend 475€ on a phone. Also took a look at the Samsung Galaxy A5, A3 and LG G4C, but they all had pretty "meh" test results and customer reviews. Even took a look at an Iphone C5, since Iphone focuses a lot on coordinated hardware, but the in-built battery and the fact that you´ll have to install Itunes so you can put songs onto the phone killed it for me. (also, I try to avoid to be an Iphone-owner, although I´ve already heard that they´re actually pretty good. Still...uugh...)

what I learned so far:

"good battery" doesn´t count as a criteria anymore, since smartphones don´t last long in general and I get enough chances to charge em anyways. I thought I could just walk in, fetch some 100-150€ phone which looks decent and be off, but now I tasted blood and that made me really picky; seems as if the market got me at the balls now  although, I can remember that I was really picky aswell when I chose my last mobile phone, and that one lasted for almost 5 years (I want my next smartphone to last for 2-3 years minimum).

Gonna check out some phones on thursday with my bro helping me so I can actually choose one and not waddle from one model to another. Yeh, very picky.

Also, holy shit some phones are big as fuck. I mean, I got some friends who own those bigguns, but it´s completely different when you suddenly hold one of those in your hands. They´re probably more comfortable to transport if you strap them onto your forearm instead of stuffing them into your pocket

They only seem big because you've used dumb phone with tiny screen. Get with times, men wear bags these days. Or change your style to baggy pants. Big screen is a blessing. And when you see there are 3D games and emulators :D

Well, you won't find some of the phones mentioned in this thread in conventional mobile shops. They usually keep the most recent ones.

Did that with my first ever phone, it cost me £3.75, I still have and use it over 10 years later.
Well, you obviously only broke the glass protective screen, rather than the display/touch screen. Repairing/buying a replacement for that tends to cost almost as much as the phone itself.

Oh I never repaired it, that's how much the phone cost xD For that same reason it ofc never had a touch screen.

Hence me being Scrooge

Yeah mine was the screen itself. But luckily because of the warranty or whatever the reason was (forgot) i only had to pay about 60-70 Euro. Was around the time the S4 was released too so might've been a limited time offer at the time or something. Anyhow. If I would do it again it would cost a loooot more.

And finally, our short odyssey has come to an end!

There was one champion under them all, independently recommended by some of you, by some of my friends and by tests and magazines. And the only phone which I always fancied at from the start on, but I was unsure about the price. But in the end, I went all in for

(click to show/hide)

yeeees, I know, it´s a biiiiiit more expensive than what I´ve been aiming for (started from 100€ phones, then went for 250-350 until I was like "ah fuggit" and got the phone I was always looking at when passing by) but I´m really happy with the purchase. The fact that I recently got some cash from some minor jobs and that the phone could be seen as an early birthday gift to myself also helped with the decision

Thanks for all the help and advices peeps! Now I gotta figure out how to kill this monstrosity called "auto-correction"...

If you own anything, you're a victim of consumerism and one of the reason this country has gone to shit.

it´s fine, somebody already made a whatsapp group, celebrating me for getting a smartphone and spamming me with stuff like this

that bastard

recharging is okay since I´m close to a pc a lot anyways. And what I´ve heard is charging the mobile via pc better for the batteries anyways

I had one from LG, one from Samsung, a smartphne from apple and a iPad.

LG had a system crash, battery fucked up and my display got rekt after a collision with our floor.
The one I have now is a samung galaxy s3. The battery fucked up like 3 months after I bought it. System is totally gay and it became ridiculously slow after like 1 year.
My iPhone3Gs. Well I lost it kinda 100 times. Partly for like 3 months or something, but damn, that shit was great. Even when iPhone 4s or something came out and all the iPads I was totally fine with it. It did exactly what I needed. SMS, phoning and internet. It was really fast and I love the shape it had, but unfortunately I rekt it when a car drove over it :I
My iPad2 is now 4 years old, holy shit that thing is undestroyable. Got 60/64 GB on it and it is as fast as on the first day my uncle gave it to me! Damn I accidentaly threw it against a fucking wall already, it was falling down our stairs a shitton of times and was already taking some showers too lol.

If I would have to recommend a smartphone, one who is simply there for phoning, sms and whatsapp it is absolutely  the iPhone. If I was working I would imo buy one :3 fking school. Still the iPhone 4s is better than any of those gay samsung bullshiting retard phones. Cant say anything about all the other branches cuz I never tried them ^^

Says the guy typing this from a computer, using the internet, wearing clothes he didn't make, sitting on a chair he didn't make, wiping his ass with toilet paper he didn't make, eating food he didn't kill with his bare hands, living in a house or shack of somesort with countless appliances, light bulbs, tubing, etc., that you guessed it........he didn't make, etc., etc....

Actually, I'm typing this from a smartphone, so your whole argument falls flat on its face.

I accept your "I've-got-no-arguments-left-so-I-must-post-a-gif" surrender. But do not fret: I am gracious in victory.

How would you know?
With the judicious use of the scientific method, anything is knowable.
