Title: cRPG obituaries
Post by: Leshma on September 12, 2015, 09:25:44 pm
We are here for five years or more and seems many of us will stay for another twenty. Therefore, I would like to ask you folks in case you personally know a member of these forums who died to post his obituary in here so we can pay him respect.

The saying "absence of evidence is not evidence of absence" is hogwash.

Absence of evidence is evidence of absence. Weak evidence in some cases, strong evidence in some cases, but it is always evidence.

Accordingly, then, I humbly submit to the assembled multitudes, for consideration, the hypothesis that Bjord, much like the mod, is dead.

Example:

You may not see the cancer (absence of evidence), but it doesn't mean you don't have it. To know for sure you need to dig deeper and go to doctor.
What do you think that is an example of? The hogwash part or the latter part?

That "hogwash" is true and I provided an example confirming it.
I thought as much, which is interesting because the example provided is actually proof that it is hogwash.

Suppose that you have two people, one with visible cancer lumps, and one without. Who is more likely to have cancer?

--

This is, of course, assuming that when you say ""hogwash" is true" you mean "The thing that Xant claimed to be hogwash is not hogwash, it is true" instead of "calling it hogwash is right, because it is hogwash."

Using your theory:

You assume that the one without lumps doesn't have a cancer since there's no presence of lumps.

I assume he may have a cancer since there's no evidence that he's healthy.

I can provide a real example of how scientists think:

It's been confirmed that there was water on Mars, therefore scientists assume organics are still there (yet they haven't found anything).
No.

First and foremost, you are missing the rather important distinction between evidence and proof.

I am not assuming one without lumps has no cancer. The person without lumps is simply less likely to have cancer than one with lumps. Hence: it is evidence. I don't know how often cancer manifests itself in lumps compared to not, thus I don't know the precise amount by which to adjust the probability downward, but downward it goes.

Suppose you have ten thousand possible worlds. One person, again, has lumps. The other does not. The amount of worlds in which the former has cancer is considerably greater than the amount of worlds where the latter has cancer. Thus: if there is no outward evidence of cancer, it is evidence that the person does not have cancer. That doesn't mean they shouldn't visit a doctor to make sure. It's evidence, not proof.

Sure, his absence on the forum is weak positive evidence for your hypothesis. "Luckily" I have some strong negative evidence in that he was last online on Steam 11 minutes ago.

We didn't find animals on Mars (no proff), it doesn't mean there ISN'T animals there.

If we find ONE, it will be prooved that THARE is animals on Mars.

In answer to OP, I have a built-in failsafe called 'Emergency Programme 1' that will trigger if I ever spend over 2 hours without logging into forums. It will post a pre-recorded message from me letting you know that I must be dead, and also telling everyone here where I left my wealth and treasure.

Heskey Xant is like a black hole, the harder you try to humiliate him the more he will suck you into his follies.

Seeing it's been a fruitless year for you in this endeavour already, I urge you to think of more productive past time hobbies.

You never realized that I was only talking about not replying to you in that thread, did you? I ignored you for a year after that because your feeble attempts at provoking me to reply were amusing. And, let's face it, it's not like you're very intelligent, so not replying to your posts isn't exactly a huge loss.

Is there somewhere I can donate money to so Heskey can talk to someone about his emotional trauma that he's suffered by Xant?

I mean its been a year now this is worrying.

have you no heart, he's clearly stuck in a loop that he cannot escape without the loving embrace of xant. i can't imagine how hard it must be to be rejected so much by the person you respect the most on the entire forum. so hard does he try, so little does he gain.

xant just say one nice thing to him at least, this is a heart breaking tragedy already.

Your "xant pls ignore me!!!" would be a little more convincing if you hadn't spent a year trying your best to get my attention. But don't worry, you set out a good stall, we're all buying what you're selling.

I see the pain in his posts, the deep wounds that he had to inflict in himself because you refused to acknowledge him, Xant.

It's no laughing matter, and I am contemplating contacting Google's anti-cyber bullying team. Don't force my hand.

I mean he has been consumed so much by the one time he thinks you got humiliated that he even put it in his signature, its now been a year. This is not healthy and my altruistic nature cannot let this progress any further, I fear for his ability to recover from your follies.

This is life changing trauma as I see it.
