Title: Does a shield's width effect the angle of protection from melee attacks?

So smaller shields have to face their attacker directly, while a user of a larger shield has more leeway?

No, it only affects projectile blocking. Shields have slightly worse overhead and stab protection than manual blocking (~150-160 degrees, compared to 180 degrees) and better sideways blocking (same 150-160 while manually you have to block towards the incoming weapon). I've tested this with a buckler and a Huscarl shield.
