Title: VKMR: Moonlight Blade Online
Post by: Vibe on July 03, 2015, 09:27:13 am
Aw shiet it's another episode of VKMR. What does VKMR stand for, you ask? It's an abbreviation for Vibe's Korean MMO Repository. Yeah, having posted a bunch of Korean MMOs on this forum already, this is now a thing. It's just so you people know what you're getting yourself into when you click the link. Expect ridiculously asiatic content, women barely clothed fighting giant tentacle monsters in high heels with huge ass swords spurting out pink dildos kind of asian.

This time, presenting a chinese sandboxy wuxia/kung-fu action MMORPG:

MOONLIGHT BLADE ONLINE

Moonlight Blade Online is a semi-sandbox open world PvP wuxia (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wuxia) themed MMORPG, with lots of new and unique features making it quite a different game from your typical western world immersing mmorpg or korean grinding/action fighting mmo/mmorpgs.
Game is f2p without ip restrictions, cash shop now only sells vanity items(dev and publisher also promised to not go p2w), game just finished CBT and is now in OBT, game most probbly will also come to the west, currently theres no english patch.

Features:
- Real-scale huge open world with full weather, day-night circle. Also check out this screenshot album (http://imgur.com/a/5yU1N), and this landscape screenshot album (http://imgur.com/a/xuvNl),
- Action combat
- Open world PvP and Bounty and penalty system for crimes, a custom sums of bounty can be offered by players to kill another player for revenge or Profession(bounty hunter/assassin); arrested players need to serve jail time to repent their crimes;(players of the profession Constables can visit prisons pardon or change penalties of other players);
- guild wars and large scale faction wars;
- Much like the Horde/Alliance in WOW and Huntian/WulinAlliance in Blade&Soul, but instead of 2 players in this game will have to choose from 4 of the factions to represent in the ever-ongoing PvP faction wars over control of areas, extra NPCs and other various benefits and resources. Several leaders of different player created guilds under the same faction will have the chance to become the "second-hands" of that faction and direct the faction wars. However other leaders of other player created guilds under the same faction can "challenge" the second-hands for a chance to replace him/her through a process of grouped PvP competition, at the cost of faction resources(which is essential and a determining factor in the faction wars).
- custom faction/guild halls
- player housing.
- PvP elo rating and matchmaking system, full spectator system(3rd or player point of view).
- Profession System(composer, writer, hunter, bounty hunter/assassin, wanderer, escort, contable, (there are 3 more professions but currently still locked, Trader, Scout, Townies; you can basically consider this the crafting system you see in other mmos but more dynamic and sanboxy). all with unique ways of play and meaningful impact on character development: for example, the assassin kills players(or NPCs as a daily quest) with bounty on them for gold that is offered by another player, profession skills for assassins include one that will locate the rough whereabouts of your target, a viewing skill that turns your screen monocolor except your target thats glowing red, a backstab skill that gives an advantage in the following fight, etc. For the escort profession, check out these screenshots of carriage escort (http://imgur.com/a/uhAdS) and hunting in action (http://imgur.com/a/oRjS8), and mechanic explanation, ; the traveler/wanderer travels the land hunts and excavates treasure using profession-specific skill and items for pinpointing the location. etc

Classes:
- Taibai: one handed super fast swordsman
- Zhenwu: slow swordsman, kinda fights from a distance/with shadows
- Tangmen: puppet masters, you fight with your puppet
- TianXiang: fight with your umbrellas (lol), I think this is more of a support class
- ShenWei: spear/longbow class
- GainBang: beggars, fights with fists

My own impressions from chinese beta so far (level 17 out of 60 I think?):
- the game feels like a mix of Age of Wushu (http://forum.melee.org/and-all-the-other-things-floating-around-out-there/age-of-wushu/) and Dynasty Warriors
- the graphics are nice, attack animations especially are incredible
- combat is actiony and fun, feels nice even with lag
- there's actually very little grind so far, you complete main quests extremely fast, since almost all of your attacks hit multiple enemies
- you can duel certain npcs (normal and hard mode) to get permanent stat boosts, which is cool
- The game isn't really fantasy apart from the wuxia. You don't fight monsters, you fight people. I found that nice, considering there's so many fantasy/scifi mmos.
- PvE is a bit too easy so far

So how the fuck do I try this out?
First off, this is in chinese open beta, with no english patch. You'll have to rely on pictures of translated interface, but it's manageable. There's no problem with quests because you can just click on target/NPC names and it'll take you there. The ping from Europe is about 300-400ms, probably not optimal for PvP, but still very playable. There is no IP block, so VPNs are not required.

Registration Page: Link (http://reg.imqq.com/) (this one is in english, good guy QQ. WRITE DOWN YOUR FUCKING QQ ID, that's your login name. I didn't write it down on my first acc because I thought email is your login ;_;)
Download Page: http://wuxia.qq.com/download.shtml (I used the yellow/orange button, download takes a while because it's china)
Game Site: http://wuxia.qq.com/

After you install the game, you need to age verify your QQ account, it's pretty simple, here's a guide (http://bns.mmosite.com/news/10232013/tencent_qq_account_identity_verification_guide.shtml).

You will need to change your locale to China and install chinese keyboard to run the game.
Install chinese keyboard: Control Panel > Region and Language >  Keyboards and Languages > Change keyboards... > Add
Change locale: Control Panel > Region and Language >  Administrative > Change system locale (need to restart PC for this, thanks microsoft)
Choose China(Traditional, PRC).

Now you should be able to run the game launcher. Once you log in, choose this server (http://www.steparu.com/images/ss2015-06-26at01.14.03.jpg), that's where most of the english speaking players are.
If you manage to get in, there's a bunch of translated guides and interface here: http://killonsight.info/forums/viewforum.php?f=202

If you need any help with the game or interface, just ask me here.

:o whuuuuuu, puppet master!!!!!!!!!!!! I love it!

John Steed/Kinsman Umbrella combat shiiiiiiit?! Hell yes!!!!!

:OOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOo (also name is totally Gang Bang)

I gots to play this, but likely gotta wait for something English otherwise i'd find it frustrating and confusing to install or do anything.

*edit* in honesty, not seen a game before where there are at least 3 classes that I *have* to try out cos they sound so fun. Usually it's just one and that's my fave.

I think these are some pretty standard Wuxia classes, at least Age of Wushu had spearmen and beggars as well. Tangmen too, but they didn't have puppets. I'm playing a Beggar myself and it's nice. Here's a video of umbrella girl fighting a puppet master:

I'd play it. Umbrellas ftw!

Sadly from the vids they mostly seem to be just thrown like shurikens/fans, didn't see much melee umbrella action :(

Also in that video the Puppet Master seemed WEAK!!!! But still wanna play

40 mins of a dude absolutely destroying with puppet master in pvp

The TianXiang (umbrella class) is mostly a ranged class though, as is puppet master. But there's a few melee skills when you slap your enemies with umbrella.

Plz let us know when there's an English version!!!!

Probably not for a while though, so if you can stomach the chink and have some patience, you should give it a go :)

The last game you suggested that I tried to install was in full-blown Russian, installing it was the easy part, trying to activate/play or uninstall it was where things got interesting. I never got past the first menu.

If I can get it installed and get it to work, and create a character then i'll be fine beyond that point.

Should work if you follow the guide I posted. That one is my own one, guides that you find online are incomplete and I had to google for extra shit I had to do to get it finally working. Worked for me and my friend. If you get stuck post here.

The locale is already there, you just need to switch to it. Both keyboard and locale take like 2 clicks, no actual installs needed.

Yeah I've had that when I tried to register a second account. I got a friend to register through that english registration page then. Are you creating your first account?

Yea, trying to. Got that message right from the start...

Already downloading the game in the background for good measure.

Edit:
Got it working now. Let my router re-connect to a new IP and it worked.

Edit2:
Seems I've managed to confirm my age too.
Now only the download needs to finish :)

Umbrella lady, here I come.

What's the coop like? Easy/possible to group up Vibe? Or does that require an unholy understanding of Chinese characters?

Hm, there's no need for grouping up early on, but later you have several activities which require you to 5 (or more) man it, like instances/dungeons, caravan escorts, catching criminals, treasure finding, pvp. The easiest way to do it is to of course have english speaking friends playing, but there's also a guide with chinese phrases you can copy paste that will get you an invite to these activities (http://forum.mmosite.com/thread/2/335/20150531/Moonlight_Blade_Online_Daily_Quest_Guide-556ad35cc55105313-1.html).

Also chinese moonrunes are just too fucking many to learn for a game. I learned to read both cyrillic and hangul (Korean) online, but chinese is just too much. Even the Japanese letters are confusing as fuck.

I'm not expecting to 'need' to group up, just wondering how easy it was since it's fun to play in a group, although i like playing chill in singleplayer too

I guess you just invite someone to a party and then play together. Not sure if it works with quests though.

We need to figure out how to add friends to some list...

...that way we can see when someone else is online.

That's easy, you press U to open the friends interface then do this:

visitors can't see pics , please register or login

There's also a guild made for English players, but you need to be level 32 first and pick the Ram head faction.

I'll obviously call my char Molly if it's free.
Otherwise I gonna update in here. Considering my download speed, that's not gonna happen before tomorrow tho.

'Abnormal activities from your IP.'

Great.

Cba with this unless there's some incredibly easy and obvious way around it

What even is a QQ account and why is it necessary to download and play a game?

It's a company that published the game, just like Square Enix with Final Fantasy and such. Kinda need an account in most mmos to play :)

Any idea why i'm getting the 'Abnormal activities from your IP.'  message?

Or how to resolve it without giving them my mobile no.? Molly did something clever, but i'm not clever so i wouldnt know

Should probably let Molly respond with that :D I'm guessing he tried again, or maybe with another email address? Maybe different browser? I solved it by having my friend do it instead of me, with my info.

The more i read about bounty system etc the more fun i think i'll find this, just frustrating to go through all these steps (and fail at the first one!!!!!!!!!!! grrrr)

Think the only way is to register from a different IP (have a friend do it for you):
Quote
What is “Abnormal Activities from My IP”?

You might have come across this error at some point – please do not worry. This error is produced when our server detects an abnormal registration and login pattern from the same IP address. At this point we’d require a mobile phone verification to ensure you’re not a robot or any other malicious software.

You may want to sign up from a different IP address or try again some time later when your current IP address will be whitelisted.

Well, most ISP supply a dynamic IP with a forced reconnect every 24 hours in Germany.
I simply forced that reconnect with my router and got myself a new IP that way. That allowed me to create an account without issue.

Make sure that you use the correct country when creating the account. That was probably my fault, I kept it standing at China, thinking that only Chinese would be allowed to register. Actually tho, there is a complete list of all countries.

Just get yourself a new IP by disconnecting and reconnecting to the internet. But that only works if you are on a dynamic IP by your ISP.

Installing right now... :D

Well, good for you cuz that thing isn't working for me.
I get some weird pink chinese symbol on start-up and that's it. Not really crashing but not starting properly either.
CPUs show no activity, neither does the GPU.

All that work for nothing :(

As cool as this seems, it's way too much hassle just to play a game in a language I don't understand at all and will just probably make me rage quit. Hope they do have a western release at some point.

Level ~50 impressions update:

Combat
Overall still fun and great to look at. Usually after playing an MMO to these levels/this much time I would already sense if the combat is boring or not and this one isn't. Even now I'm discovering new depths. Your character basically has 6 bars:
- Health, determines when you die
- 'Flying'(stamina) bar, determines how much you can sprint, dodge roll, jump around and dash through the sky
- Block/stability meter, works kinda like a shield before you start taking real damage
- 'Ultimate' meter, determines when you can use certain powerful abilities
- The red and blue meters (no idea what they're called), when those fill up to 100%, some abilities that are marked with either the blue or red icon become stronger and the animation changes, usually adds one more 'step' to the move. For example Beggars move 'grab and throw on the floor' becomes 'grab, throw on the floor and then body slam enemy while they're lying'.

A lot of abilities, at least with Beggar, who's a close combat fighter (and thus susceptible to kiting), have some sort of a lock. That means you're holding your enemy in a lock/combo, if they're block meter is drained, otherwise they can dodge out of it. There's also a special skill to break out of these locks, so you don't just sit and watch yourself get pounded. Then you have skills that are based around dealing damage to enemies block meter, but deal less damage to raw hp. So basically what you need to do is break the enemies block then use combo skills on them before it recharges, otherwise combo/lock skills do not do as much damage.
There's also a skill with every class that works like an 'execute' ability when you use it on a low HP enemy. This instakills an enemy and returns some health to you. Great for PvE. For example my class' execute ability is my guy jumping on enemy, grabbing his head, spinning around him breaking his neck while also hitting all the enemies around him with the spin.
All skills have fairly low cooldowns so it's pretty fast paced.

I actually did some duels with chinese players and the lag wasn't that hindering.

General

Most of your progress until level 35 is by doing the main quest. You can also do side quests and NPC dueling, but it's not necessary, as main quest gives plenty of XP. After level 35-36, the main story ends and then continues at level 40, 50 and 60 (max level is 70). So what do you do if you're out of main story? There's several things you can do to level up. Note that you can do only so much of each of these per day, as the XP is capped. The XP cap stacks for 3 days, so you can wait and then do everything the third day.

So how do you fill up these daily xp caps?

- Meditating at your school master. Basically all you need to do is go back to your school (school=class) area and meditate for a few minutes and you will get xp.
- Job/profession daily quests. There's 4 types of those and they require a party of 5:
  - Finding Treasure - you search a smaller area for these artifacts, you need to find 5 of them and each party member needs to stand on the spot where they found it until all do
  - Escorting Cart - you and your team drive a cart to a location and halfway through it is attacked by NPCs
  - Finding Criminals - you go to 5 different places on the map and beat on mobs
  - Attacking a Cart - never done this one
- Grinding instance - you get into a huge party/raid with other people, get transported to a location where you fight huge amounts of mobs for up to 15 minutes.
- Other side stuff mentioned below

These daily XP caps can be completed quite fast, so it never felt grindy to me so far. It also puts some breaks on the nolifers :)

Side stuff you can do:
- Instances/dungeons - you go through trash mobs and bosses, get loot. Standard fare. One dungeon was especially interesting, as it was a stealth mission, where you go around and backstab guards without being spotted (you can kill the boss by backstabbing him as well). Bosses can be pretty hard, as they're not just tank and spank. They have attacks that can one shot you and you need to know the tactics on how each boss works. For example one boss spawns with 3 adds that all need to die within a few seconds of each other, but cannot be too close to each other, so you need to separate them. In addition to that, the boss does huge arrow rain AoE that kills you very fast unless you stand in the marked safezone, so you need to pay attention. There's a dungeon party finder feature, so there's not a lot of problems finding a party to do these. Dungeon bosses drop good items as well as cosmetic items, which I think is nice.
- Meditating at certain spots in the world to receive meridian points (take meridian as some sort of alternate/additional progress)
- Attack or escort caravans (different from daily missions mentioned before!) - you will receive money depending on how stacked the cart was (determined randomly at start)
- Professions (different from daily missions!) - you have several professions that you can do to get some extra items/money. I opted for treasure hunter, basically what you do is use an item until and it gives you direction (east, west, etc) of where the treasure could be, you locate it, dig at the site and get some loot
- Crafting
- Side quests and NPC dueling - each of these rewards you with either meridian points or permanent stat boosts pills, so you can imagine it's quite important to do them sooner or later
- Open world bosses - require more people, never done them
- pvp, dueling, guild, faction war, etc - have not experienced any of these besides normal dueling

How important are levels? For example if you're trying to bounty hunt a level 70, and you're level 60, do you even stand a chance?

No idea, I'm guessing you don't stand much of a chance though, yeah.

If anyone is as masochistic as me and still playing this, we have a chinese speaking dude in our guild translating the whole interface/game and writing a huge guide here, very useful:
http://killonsight.info/forums/viewtopic.php?f=202&t=1463

For anyone having bad latency/ping:
I managed to find a ping booster that seriously improved my connection (from Europe) to their server (China). Latency during chinese prime time, when the whole server was full (+queue), was not optimal. Lagspikes were often and fighting hard bosses was pretty difficult. Outside of primetime it worked smooth even without the booster though. But I was surprised that this booster improved the connection so much. From up to 700ms during chinese prime time with frequent lagspikes to ~300ms with no noticeable skill lag and no lag spikes. However, it's not free, costs like 4$ per month :( - there is a 5 day trial which is nice to see if it actually improves anything for you, as it might differ from ISP to ISP, but it worked wonders for me and a guildie from Italy.
