Title: New Maps, Old Maps, More Maps
Post by: njames89 on June 02, 2015, 08:04:11 pm
I don`t think I am alone in saying that the map rotation is a bit dull right now. Everyone can immediately think of a few great maps not in the rotation.
(click to show/hide)

Why not spice up our game and add some of the old classics back in and maybe even some new maps?

My top 5 list:
1:Tavern
2:Arena
3:Giant Bridge map (with bridge gap)
4:Giant Volcano with Lava pit
5:Donkey Hill (With Giant Donkey statue and ladder to climb inside)

I very much agree, Most of the battle maps are already getting kinda boring :/

Besides heisenberg. I love heisenberg.

More maps means more variety and I think everyone would agree pretty much. Poll added vote!

All the maps you suggested, perhaps save for Arena, have been population killers in the past.

I Think new maps should be added, but I agree with Teeth, the maps you've suggested are kinda shit and gimmicky imo. The bridge map with the gap was the dumbest shit ever, everyone just stood on their side looking at eachother whilst ranged had a good time. Arena might be a fun map sometimes but lets be honest, its fucking tiny and if theres more than 40 ppl on its just a clusterfuck.

There are good maps however that were removed from the map pool, might be Worth looking at what maps we used to have and reevaluate if they're good or not.

There's a few circle maps in the roster right now like the Church one which in my opinion is frikkin horrible and should be removed or changed. The journey to find your opponents isn't too exciting.

I seriously doubt a couple different maps in the rotation will "Kill" the population. I believe 100% playing the same boring shitty rotation "Kills" the population.

Definitely, but so does bad maps. When that shitty forest map with the beach comes on, people leave, new maps should be added but not bad ones.

I am talking about NA. I don't know how the eu server behaves.

Rather than play 1000 boring village maps most players in NA would have maps with distinct identifiable features that make the gameplay different and more exciting.

Features like:
-The close range fighting of Tavern and Arena
-The change of fighting over a massive chasm and jumping the bridge (great fights at the bridge gap)
-A Donkey statue ranged can climb inside and shoot down from on a large cav plains (Praise the donkey god)
-Several Bridges over a chasm filled with lava (makes for great ranged play)

These maps are just fun to play. Even new players can tell you the rotation now is garbage and boring.

I am not talking about reducing the overall population, I am talking about the population dipping visibly when certain maps come on. Gimmicky maps always have this effect after a while. With servers only being decently populated for a few hours each day, one gimmicky map that a few people cannot be arsed to play can effectively end the playing session for the night. I would be careful extrapolating your opinion to everyone. That said, I can't extrapolate my experiences with map popularity to NA, just saying that these maps, save for Arena, would absolutely murder an EU battle session. Nobody in EU except ranged likes to play maps where they have to run around large obstacles, climb shit, or in any way have to approach ranged without cover for a prolonged period of time.

Also, my title is a lie, I have long resigned from any official position of managing rotations, so you don't have to convince me.

Yeah, the gimmicky maps are best left out of the rotation, but accessible to admins in case there is a collective want for a "different" map when one is online. However, we could definitely use some different maps in rotation, for instance older maps like the city riot (the map with the overturned carts and the sewers) might be able to make a comeback now that the server population as a whole has dwindled. It's arguably a non-cav map, but I don't see why we can't have a couple maps in a large rotation not cater to a single class type.

"Desert Ruins"

No map name :/

BRING THEM BACK QQ

btw. it took me like 1 hour to check all the maps of c-rpg :O there are sooooooooo many, admins or whoever should just bring even more maps in the rotation so it's not allways the same shit, playing allways the same maps for ages is fuuuuuuuuuucking boooooring. Even though not to know what kind of map (cav ranged inf) it is is even more fun than to know "fuck, again a ranged/whatever map". And there will be allways some people leaving when one map comes. Probably when one map sort of kills the whole server it should't be in the rotation but I remember thousands of brave warriors playing on the maps above and they were really fun to play! "The canals of our city" - Wait, why was this even removed?

(click to show/hide)

"Crop Rotation" - See above comment.

(click to show/hide)

"Street Revolt" - See above. This shit is a classic.

(click to show/hide)

"Desert Ruins" - This is another good old one; arguably very archer friendly, but far better than that church map we have now, and both have a slightly circular shape.

(click to show/hide)

No map name :/ - Meh. I could live with this in rotation or out of it. Would really like if it came up really rarely, maybe just a few times a week, but too much and it gets stale.

(click to show/hide)

"Prison Riot" - This map was never all that great. Sure, besting people on the balance beam above the pit of death was always fun, but other than that this map offers nothing really.

I like the last one somehow, dunno why but some maps are just good without any reason^^ I think all the experienced players will agree with me that some maps just got a feeling which ppl like, and I like the last one. Well the 4th one isn't thaaaat needed but I still like it too^^ It forces those tard bannerstacks nowadays to do something but running in circles and feeling cool cuz some of them are first!

Map 1 is also a massive circle map but for some reason I kinda like it, a bit nostalgic maybe.

Map 2 is pretty good and should be brought back.

Map 3 is absolute shit imo, forces you to fight in a line whilst range hides behind cover and shoots, not a big fan.

Map 4 is pretty good aswell, as Jona said its good for ranged but that never really bothered me too much since it provides a good amount of cover/path options and is quite small.

Map 5-6... pls no

Ah, these are far more reasonable suggestions than the ones the OP did.

"The canals of our city"

(click to show/hide)
Not sure where you got the name from, but this one should be called "Battle: Trouble in the Neighbourhood". I removed this one because it is extremely unfocused and causes people to circle endlessly. Which was okay when the map was covered by 80-100 players but now its just running and running without ever fighting someone

"Crop Rotation"

(click to show/hide)
Has been removed because teams have to fight for the top plateau to prevent being dominated by ranged from up there, but there is no cover whatsoever so the top plateau is a cringy place to fight. Basically drew huge groans from non ranged and lead to some groans and quits from melee. Looks pretty though. During my last clean-up of the rotation I basically removed any iffy maps, because the power of maps on reducing the server population is real and I wanted to prevent it as much as possible. This one was by no means terrible.

"Street Revolt"

(click to show/hide)
I removed this a long time a go because it was rather small. Also ranged could do easy headshots from all angles on the melee fights circling between the barricades, like a sort of Medieval tower defense. Also the map was unplayable for cav. With the current population these problems are much less problematic so I see no reason to not re-add it.

"Desert Ruins"

(click to show/hide)
Has been removed when the main complaint I heard was that there were too many enclosed urban maps and people wanted old village maps and more open maps back. This one played fine, though there were some very stronk ranged spots, but this could be re-added

No map name :/

(click to show/hide)
This one is called Chasm. This one was a very clear population killer when it was in the rotation. There is no cover and no reasonable alternate routes. Ranged gets straight shots on everyone and when people get shot while jumping the gap, they drop out of the air instantly. You might think this is hilarious, but by the time I removed it the fun had clearly worn off for most people. I would absolutely recommend not re-adding, this one will demolish the player count, at least on EU.

"Prison Riot"

(click to show/hide)
Very unfocused with people spreading out over all the corridors, hard to play for cav. With 80 maps in the rotation I'd rather play the good ones more often than have mediocre maps pop up like this one.

Once again I don't think myself responsible for the map rotation anymore, so take this as advice from someone who has paid attention to how the server responds to certain maps for a long time. Not sure who is in charge of maps now, but bringing back old maps is like 5 seconds work and even I could be arsed to do that for a new patch if I got access to the files.

I think the last time anybody did any cleaning up of the maps in the game files is somewhere in early 2011 or something, because I recall some very old maps that I have not been able to find in there. This means that everything that has ever been in the rotation from 2011 on is still available in the files, and an admin could change the map to any of them. Though I believe map names were fucked up again last I checked, which would make it difficult.

Blackbird is an EU player and he is definitely asking for these maps to be re-added to EU servers.

And btw.: I'm playing this game for like 2 years now, I am playing like every day 2 - 3 hours, how is it possible to not know me :O. And well, I'm like allways on the top of the scoreboard^^

It feels like there are thousands of players having the wantage of playing EU 2, so why the fuck is it that difficult to populate it? I allready tried to get some players 100 times but it ends allways in some good people leaving, some more or less good following them and in the end there are only my old friends. And btw. I think I should take scourge as a compliment, should I? xD

Funny thing about that is that people always complained about DRZ or Grey stack on EU2. Now the stacks are gone and EU2 is empty =D

But it is just the natural way to go, NA2 died ages ago as well, now NA1 is having a hard time to populate properly. Same will happen to EU.

EU2 already, now it is just a matter of time until EU1 will die as well.

Teeth I dunno if you know what I mean but plz remove that one conquest map which's theme is desert. It's a new one of fips and totally buggy (ppl can't spawn on the flags cuz the map is too big). There is at first a front wall and after it the flags are spread over a giant terriotory. It was the population killer of doom. 5 minutes of this map and half of the server left. Really plz trust a "active" (whatever active means atm) EU2 player who cares a lot about tactic n'shit. Gonna search in the forum it's name^^
