Title: Mad Max: Fury Road *Probably contains Spoilers*
Post by: Leesin on May 31, 2015, 09:25:51 am
I used the search function and couldn't find anything on this and was pretty surprised, the original Mad Max movies were epic, well Beyond the Thunderdome was a bit lame lol but the first two are great.
Saw the new movie on Friday, overall I really enjoyed it, even with its flaws. I think Tom Hardy is pretty decent in most movies but I'm still not sure about him as Max, maybe I will need to watch it again, but I didn't think he was as convincing as he could have been, or maybe it's just because I was expecting the racist maniac Mel Gibson-esque Max. He still played a good part and I don't think there are many other people I'd have want to have seen as Max, it probably doesn't help that the dialogue for Max seemed even more limited than ever, but perhaps that is down to the characters ever increasing madness.
I thought Charlize Theron was pretty damn good as Furiosa, better than I was expecting so probably puts her in an even better light from my view, I didn't feel it was too overly cheese with a skinny little women being fairly hard as nails.
The movie didn't ever seem slow, plenty of action, all done well, it was quite a bit weirder/crazier than I thought it would be, however it did work so hey ho, they did well with the post-apocalyptic setting. Strangely I have only one huge criticism, that fucking Guitarist with the flamethrowing guitar, yeah okay I got the picture the first time you zoomed in on him, you don't need to keep doing it, the character looked cringey as fuck in his lame pose with his attention whoring guitar and every time they kept focusing on him in a scene I cringed hard to the point of anger, it was just silly and I would have been happy to see him die a lot sooner, it seemed like something a 12 year old would find cool. In fact I'm hoping someone with good editing skills will remove most of his pointless screen time and release a Mad Max: Fury Edit like the Phantom Edit was for removing Jar Jar Binks pointless cringey bullshit from Star Wars Episode 1 lol.
Anyone else think the guitar guy was the Jar Jar Binks of Fury Road? opinions on the movie? I think I am going to have to watch it again to get a stronger opinion to be honest, but I'd say it's worth a watch even if it's not the greatest of movies.

I went to go see it when it premiered despite having known nothing about it and having last seen the previous movies years ago. I really enjoyed it, they really did nail the post apocalypse setting and it definitely felt like a Mad Max movie. I honestly enjoyed the flame thrower guitar guy, he didn't really make THAT many appearances, and I don't think he was added to be "cool" but to add some humor to the setting.

It was the best movie ever, no flaws worthy mentioning. The guitar guy fit everything well, considering he wasnt even the craziest thing going on.

lol...
Anyways, the movie just doesn't stop from the start, really high tempo, no saving budget on cheesy romantic scenes they went all out, really all the credit goes to car and costume department everthing was spot on. As for Max, he seems a bit autistic and barely speaks, didn't mind that probably for the better, Charlize is good, certanly worth a watch especially in the cinema

It's not about the craziness of it, it was just incredibly cringe worthy and they kept zooming in on him like "oh man look at this cool guitar guy with flamethrower guitar soooo coooool" when for me he is the lamest character in the movie. His whole pose and heavy metal bullshit just annoyed me after the first couple of times it focuses on him. Goes to show that it is a fairly decent movie if my main issue is that straya guitar cunt.
Think I might go see the movie again as my Dad wants to see it and I will just close my eyes everytime that guy is on screen

My only complaint: Liberal use of the "Fade to Black".
Urg.

It's a great movie- I loved it. I just don't think it qualifies as best movie ever, which is what the general consensus seems to be.
It's got the extreme benefit of very tight direction, and I guess it's rare enough to see this in a summer blockbuster that people freak out.

I enjoyed the movie. I don't get the flashbacks Max was having though, none of them were familiar characters from any previous movies. Was the little girl supposed to be his daughter or something? Don't really recall them explaining any of that, in the 1st movie it was his wife and very young son that was ran down by that motorcycle gang. Was this movie supposed to be connected to the 1st two or was it a reboot?

I usually hate characters like that, the comic relief kinda deal. But they didnt overdo him, he was shown just a few times, and it was pretty funny because it actually felt like it fit the whole crazy train.

Its not often i enjoy a movie much, so i tend to exaggurate, but it was pretty fantastic. I only really go this crazy about LOTR movies, since then its been a drystreak, and then this comes.

Well being a big fan of the original movies I kinda got the idea of how Mad Max is in my head, thinking of Mad Mel Gibson and how he portrayed Max, when in reality that's not going to be the case for Hardy. But it still stood out to me that Mel was a better Max than Hardy IMO, but not many people other than Hardy would have fit the role regardless.
Not sure if you understood what I meant anyway judging by your comment lol.

So, what is the deal with this movie?
Why is it so hyped? Why are people saying it's the best action movie ever?
It was crap. No world-building, little context, pointless action, boring characters, shitty dialogue, bizarre things happening just for the sake of being bizarre, and so on.
It's basically a single action scene taken out of a real movie. I have no idea how it lasted however long it lasted, thinking back about what happened it feels like it was five minutes long.

Because its like a massive adrenalin shot. If it felt like it was 5 minutes long then theres no way you couldnt have enjoyed it. I think your trying to hate it just to spite the fanbois.
Anyway heres a review by some of the best reviewers on youtoobs. They will enlighten you if you have 20 minutes to spare. Starts around 1:58 in.

I watched it yesterday, it's definitely different. It's basically 100% pure fast paced action, from start to finish. No lore, hardly any dialogue. And everyone is mad, not just Max. I personally prefer to have some story and background, but this was a nice change, just pure mindless fun.

My main problem with it is that I expected a lot more, especially after reading the hype. Now it's a 6.5/10 at most, watchable mindless action that's trying way too hard to be weird, while I was waiting for something with an actual storyline, dialogue and different scenes (instead of what practically amounts to one silly car chase scene).

Its basically Redline but not anime, which is great. I might have to have a movie night watching both movies at once, but that might just be too much action for the body and mind to handle.

Redline has more story and I enjoyed it more, but yeah it's the same type of movie 8-). I definitely wouldn't give this movie as much as the score on imdb. It's like Xant said, basically one big, flashy car chase scene. But it was visually pleasing - lots of detail in clothes/wear and cars. Music could be better, some tracks were nice but nothing really remarkable.

Yeah the movie does seem like one big blur because of the action to story ( or lack of ) ratio, it didn't help watching it in 3D, I am going to re watch it in 2d. The weirdness in the movie carries over from the original Mad Max movies, there were definitely some very strange characters in that, the difference is there was a fair amount more dialogue and story in those movies, which this movie needed more of. Max wasn't a mute sociopath, but sometimes you would think so in this movie. It's a decent movie for what it is, but they could have done a lot more with it, especially considering what was already laid out before them in the older movies, they could have been a bit more imaginative rather than one big car chase.
Also, I still hate that stupid guitar guy .

It was retarded, but just another symptom of their "must-be-weird-to-shock-people" shtick. And it works. People go "hahah wow! That's crazy! So weird! Makes no sense! Equals awesome!"

Yeah, there was a lot of weird in the movie and quite a bit of it was passable, but the guitar guy was just retarded and cringe worthy and it baffles me how there are people that actually liked him, it felt like if I was a 10 year old I might have liked it and thought he was cool, but it was a 15 rated movie here lol.

Give in to your inner child, and you will become allpowerful.
I thought it was cool when everytime the camera would watch over the incoming army of vehicles you would hear the guitar and drums in the distant. Also considering basically the entire movie is made with practical stunts, i just think that the crazier it gets, the better. He's only shown for a pretty short time total, i think they counted on him being either love or hate kinda role, so they didnt show him too much, but he still had his parts. Thats how i felt the entire movie was, balanced in all regards. I never felt like ugh too much talk or too much boring action, it felt like it kept advancing, and showing new stuff. There is a ton of action, but it doesnt bore me like, erhm, the latest Hobbit movie, holy fuck those fight scenes had me sleeping. That movie felt like it dragged on for way longer than its suppose to. While mad max blasted away in 5 minutes and im instantly ready to watch it again as i exited the theater.
