Title: Freedom of Speech
Post by: AwesomeHail on May 08, 2015, 01:53:11 am
So I have to write this essay about Freedom of speech.

I had to hand this shit in months ago, but the professor pitied me, and I can hand it in somewhere next week.

Quote
For this assessement you will explore the different opinions on the freedom of speech and you will clearly state your own opinion about this, using arguments. You may focus on Charlie Hebdo but you may use any arguments and examples you like.
Your spoken speech will be graded, together with the abstract.

You should use at least 3 people’s opinions on the freedom of speech
These people should end up in your bibliography. For these sources you write down what you used from them.

You bright minded fellas surely have some good arguments on the freedom of speech using Charlie Hebdo or the recent/older Turkish social media bans (feel free to introduce other topics.

with your argument, I have a primary source. my prof has a sort of fetish for that shit

help me out if you want to :)

The only source you need:

Quote
Congress shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion, or prohibiting the free exercise thereof; or abridging the freedom of speech, or of the press; or the right of the people peaceably to assemble, and to petition the Government for a redress of grievances.

"Why should freedom of speech and freedom of the press be allowed? Why should a government which is doing what it believes to be right allow itself to be criticized? It would not allow opposition by lethal weapons. Ideas are much more fatal things than guns. Why should any man be allowed to buy a printing press and disseminate pernicious opinions calculated to embarrass the government?"

Attributed to Lenin in a speech in Moscow 1920

This should give you a starting point for an interesting paper. :)

Ahem, just youtube Christoper hitchens  and you have enough material for a lifetime.
Here's one example:

Just remember to be critical of what he says or you'll miss the point of what he is saying.

Some other Freedom of speech incidents:
-Danish cartoon controversy
-KKK defended by ACLUhttps://www.aclu.org/news/aclu-em-defends-kkks-right-free-speech (https://www.aclu.org/news/aclu-em-defends-kkks-right-free-speech)
-David Irving and the right to express holocaust denial

Edit1:
-Blasphemy laws(Ireland is probably the most interesting)
