Title: Soylent
Post by: Golem on January 19, 2015, 04:45:17 pm
Anyone outside of the community wants to pay for early access? Fuck'm!
In the mean time time have a 'Food for thought' funding button on the page. And I mean, literally.
There's this thing called Soylent, which is a mixture of all the essential things human body needs. The price is aproximately 3 dollars a day per-son.
On top of that it's a smoothy-like liquid so it will also take less time to eat and is supposed to be healthy(I'm not saying you guys aren't eating healthy already), so it could potentially speed everything up.
Your thoughts? http://www.soylent.me/#/
BTW don't take the first sentence seriously its to spark up your attention.  :P

No thanks, I like food. Also, the head of the project looks pretty unhealthy as far as I remember.

Or giving money to really shady shit like this.  At least with M:BG I knew where the money would be going

The dude behind the idea himself once said he too still enjoyed food and this is not even meant to replace food for good. It is supposed to be a fast nutrition boost for occasions on which you don't have the time to eat before leaving home, say, for work. Or maybe you simply don't have the energy to even go make yourself a sandwich and could use a full stomach.

I initially didn't like the idea either. But now I am very interested in it. The grave reeality is that we probably won't even get it in Turkey or if we do, that 3-Dollar price tag will turn into at least quadruple the price because of the unending import taxes and fees grabbed by intermediaries.

Ok, you're probably right. We could still raise money to hire a poacher who would bring them ducks, right?

Food system devised by a guy with no previous knowledge, doing experiments on himself using a bottom up approach and making some adjustments when people point out how retarded that is even if a doctor hasn't diagnosed him as malnourished within weeks, which was apparently his expectation if it wasn't up to his standards.

Wow, so far, it's sounding like not necessarily a horrible idea, if you ignore some parts. It's also an unpleasant liquid that always tastes like the same batch of blenderised vitimin tablets.

Somehow, I don't forsee long and interesting lives for participants.

Don't forget the part where he purposely destroyed all of his microbial flora and fauna on purpose. He was doing a "survive with as little water as possible" challenge and wanted to conserve water by shutting down his poop system since pooping "costs" water.

Quote
Feces are almost entirely deceased gut bacteria and water. I massacred my gut bacteria the day before by consuming a DIY Soylent version with no fiber and taking 500mg of Rifaximin, an antibiotic with poor bioavailability, meaning it stays in your gut and kills bacteria. Soylent’s microbiome consultant advised that this is a terrible idea so I do not recommend it. However, it worked. Throughout the challenge I did not defecate. (http://robrhinehart.com/?p=1152)

What a fucking idiot. He is gonna have to have a family member's poop inserted up his ass to repopulate his gut. No really, that is the safest most effective way to treat loss of gut microbes I'm not even joking. Look it up.

yeah but if you fuck it up this badly, most doctors will recommend that you shove a family member's poop up your butt for quick recovery

that is also way funnier than eating foods with active cultures in them

put the poop

in your butt

Or you could just mix the poop with soylent.
Makes me wonder, if you ingested gut bacteria of a certain animal, would you be more able to digest its natural diet? Say you eat gorilla dung and then start eating leaves and shit.

You would still have a human stomach. Eating "leaves and shit" would make your organs unhappy, even if they were filled with gorilla poop and festooned in gorilla bacteria.

What a great conversation we are having. Poop. Poo. Put a gorilla turd in your butthole. I am mentally 7 years old.

I'm pretty sure most bacteria you start life with are extremely unlikely to be taken up just by eating food; careful insertion of poo is actually the only answer.
Title: Re: Soylent
Post by: Golem on January 21, 2015, 12:31:58 am
The thing is, that even if we were able to transport such a high quantity of gorilla poop in Austria the climate would kill them right when you put them out the basket. The only solution it seems is to carry the excrement in your butt and then do an ass to ass poo transplant in a local hospital.
The problems come in with choosing the right butt and also fixing the dung inside the carrier in such a way, that he can still shit, but doesn't have to take it out everytime, which would be counterproductive to the whole mission. If we are to get gorilla poo, it must be high quality poo, gentleman. Not some rancid, steaming blob from a Zoo in Vienna.

No, it's not. It's only stupid if you don't understand it. A lot of very smart people think it's an excellent idea. So calling it "a stupid idea" says more about you than it does about anything else.

Yudkowsky is incredibly inept and rather than actually work towards all the cool shit he wants to do just writes fantasy wank blogposts about ~the singularity~

he wrote an epic length harry potter fanfic to prove that... uh... I'm not sure what.

Quote from: Harry Potter and the Methods of Rationality
"Hey, Draco, you know what I bet is even better for becoming friends than exchanging secrets? Committing murder."

"I have a tutor who says that," Draco allowed. He reached inside his robes and scratched himself with an easy, natural motion. "Who've you got in mind?"

Harry slammed The Quibbler down hard on the picnic table. "The guy who came up with this headline."

Draco groaned. "Not a guy. A girl. A ten-year-old girl, can you believe it? She went nuts after her mother died and her father, who owns this newspaper, is convinced that she's a seer, so when he doesn't know he asks Luna Lovegood and believes anything she says."

Not really thinking about it, Harry pulled the ring on his next can of Comed-Tea and prepared to drink. "Are you kidding me? That's even worse than Muggle journalism, which I would have thought was physically impossible."

Draco snarled. "She has some sort of perverse obsession about the Malfoys, too, and her father is politically opposed to us so he prints every word. As soon as I'm old enough I'm going to rape her."

so yes no_rules is smarter than yudkowsky

Quote from: Yudkowsky
Now here's the moral dilemma. If neither event is going to happen to you personally, but you still had to choose one or the other:

Would you prefer that one person be horribly tortured for fifty years without hope or rest, or that 3^^^3 people get dust specks in their eyes?

I think the answer is obvious. How about you?

I'll go ahead and reveal my answer now: Robin Hanson was correct, I do think that TORTURE is the obvious option, and I think the main instinct behind SPECKS is scope insensitivity.

Some comments:

While some people tried to appeal to non-linear aggregation, you would have to appeal to a non-linear aggregation which was non-linear enough to reduce 3^^^3 to a small constant. In other words it has to be effectively flat. And I doubt they would have said anything different if I'd said 3^^^^3.

If anything is aggregating nonlinearly it should be the 50 years of torture, to which one person has the opportunity to acclimate; there is no individual acclimatization to the dust specks because each dust speck occurs to a different person. The only person who could be "acclimating" to 3^^^3 is you, a bystander who is insensitive to the inconceivably vast scope.

Scope insensitivity - extremely sublinear aggregation by individuals considering bad events happening to many people - can lead to mass defection in a multiplayer prisoner's dilemma even by altruists who would normally cooperate. Suppose I can go skydiving today but this causes the world to get warmer by 0.000001 degree Celsius. This poses very little annoyance to any individual, and my utility function aggregates sublinearly over individuals, so I conclude that it's best to go skydiving. Then a billion people go skydiving and we all catch on fire. Which exact person in the chain should first refuse?

I may be influenced by having previously dealt with existential risks and people's tendency to ignore them.

Torturing someone for their entire life is better than everyone who ever lives getting a speck of dust in their eye once in their lifetime. Okay buddy.

Wrote most of..

And here's some research papers he's written.

The Harry Potter fanfic he wrote brought in an insane amount of smart, talented people to MIRI and CFAR.

I'm also not sure what that rape quote is supposed to prove? It's... fiction? Draco is supposed to be evil?
