As a long time and hardcore 'The Wire' fan I finally got to watch another Show by the creator David Simons. For me 'The Wire' was always the best thing I saw on TV (did not actually watch on a TV of course :)). I liked other series like Breaking Bad, Sopranos, House of Cards, etc. but for me none got even close at what I think about The Wire. Of course these shows are all very different and in a way uncomparable but for me the documentary style, the level of detail and the presentation of reality without any moral highground was and will be always fantastic to watch.
So now I started watching the 2008 Mini-Series (7 episodes) "Generation Kill (http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0995832/?ref_=nv_sr_1)" about a Marine Battalion during the Iraq Invasion of 2003 based on an equally named book - and I 'm absolutely blown away again. Again, it feels like you are watching a documentary in movie format. You get presented the silliness, boredom, horror, idiocy and humanity of modern warfare in a way I never saw it before, i'ts not anti-war nor pro-war, just war. (Ok, the conclusion I make for this war is pretty negative, but you don't get necessarily forced to do that by the show)
So in short, if you liked The Wire, go watch this show. Just don't expect the level of different viewpoints and maybe not that intriguing characters, it is just 7 episodes full of normal marines in Iraq. However if you are not familiar with the Wire - don't expect too much action, like real war this is a lot about waiting. Maybe this is nothing for you, but if you are not sure just keep watching, it took a while for me too again to get me hooked.

If you want another proper show go watch "Rome" (http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0384766/?ref_=nv_sr_2). It's entertaining, good acting and is somewhat historically accurate. It's my favorite one up there with "The Wire".

yeah, Pullo! watched it great show. Too bad it got cancelled early.

Tbh there really isn't that much story after Augustus takes over. Just a bunch of reforms and some expansion without any big wars.

Started watching it few years back on a tip from a mate who's in the army, he was really into it and loved it, I just found it boring as fuck and only got through episode and half. Different strokes...

Armadillo being a lot better than Restrepo, in my opinion. More nuance and guts, and overall more interesting production.

Tbh there really isn't that much story after Augustus takes over. Just a bunch of reforms and some expansion without any big wars.
They had whole different plans on the pace of 2nd season and topics for season 3-5 and then rushed when they got informed that the show is cancelled.

I'm a fan of the show. It definitely seems to be the only tv show (that isn't a documentary) that captures how modern American soldiers (yes, yes, I know it's Marines, but damn do they have a lot in common) act and what they deal with. That constant radio chatter at the end is eerie in it's accuracy. It's nice to watch something that doesn't force you to suspend disbelief every now and then.

I heard it's just softcore with a veneer of history over it. Is that an accurate description?
