What is the best pole arm to use for a fast horse?
-
Try out the heavy and light lance, figure out which you like better. Everything else is subpar or bad. Hafted blade used to be great from borseback, but was given an ass retarded animation with one of the patches. I prefer the heavy, the length is too good to give up for me.
-
Heavy Lance - its very long, deals good dmg and most important you can stab and couch (you cant stab with Great Lance for example).
Lance is Queen of all weapons :D
-
Try "Lance" and "Light Lance" . They fucked heavy lance badly and as a cavalary your main aim should be flanking infantry and archers . Heavy lance is good against cav but it is so slow and hard to manage timing.
-
Actually if weapon is slower you can more easily hit your targets as cav. Slow weapon (or if you have low wpf in pole) deals damage longer.
Heavy lance isnt so slow, its the best for horseman and not bad when using on foot.
Lancer need to overrange your enemies.
Using Light Lance you have no chance against H Lance user mounted or not and most ppl is using Heavy Lances.

Lies.
If everyone just couches their spear yes you are right longer weapon = win
But my friend you can outrange even couched great lance with light lance.Cuz you thrust that.
Same goes to heavy lance vs light lance cav battles.Light lance thrusts quicker so you can easily adopt to your enemies horse riding speed, weapon lenght because it is easy to set timing .
If i was not an infantry on this GEN i would explain what i meant better on duel server.

Slower lances are not better for cav.
They make it much hatder to take on multiple opponents especially in cav fights.
Anyway, if your good at timing and know how to control your horse the heavy lance will serve you well.
-
Light lance is soooooo fast compared to the heavy lance. If you plan to fight other cav then take the heavy but if you plan to backstab infantry and archers more then take the light lance.
Personally I use the light lance since using a champion courser I can normally backstab people before they hear me coming. That said, you can still use it vs cavalry and i tend to do quite well even against heavy lance users.

If everyone just stabs - longer weapon win.
Couching is almost useless. I did not take couching into account. (good against an enemy who does not see you, or lone infantryman still holding block - who care about weapon range then)
When fighting vs light lance user i dont care he can stab faster because he cant reach me. You know my horse can make evasing manuvers, right ? I can keep the enemy lancer at a distance.
I say theoretically ,you know that on the battlefield it can be different.
Oh i dont want to say Light lance is sux, but in my opinion heavy lance is better. Maybe a question of style of play.
Some people like range and others attack speed.

Why is nobody mentioning War Spear?
In my opinion it is also a good polarm to use from horseback. You can bump&stab easilier than with a Heavy Lance for example.
Also the reach is not that bad, as I manage to outrange most 2handers.
War Spear is also very good on foot, as it has side-swings.
Another fact is that War Spear is faster compared to other Lances:
Light Lance: 90 Spd Rtg
Lance: 80 Spd Rtg
Heavy Lance: 65 Spd Rtg
War Spear: 95 Spd Rtg

You can't couch it.
Couching still 1hits and break shields so it is useful imho.

Bifi. about the warspear its because it has waay to little length. Length is the most important attribute as lancing cavalry. However, the price you pay for length is the important factor. Heavy lance used to be like 80 speed, lance 85 or so and light lance 90. That way you got loads of length for 10 speed and everyone used the heavy lance. Then cRPG devs figured heavy lance needed a nerf, and reduced speed to 65. (thats cripple slow, great maul has speed 80, just as a comparison) So, using the heavy lance then became extremely expensive in terms of speed. Heavy lance is now 15 length for the price of 25 speed. The warspear however, is getting 5 speed for the cost of 25 length. Thats not very good imo. Also being able to couch is actually a very good ability, good cavalry knows when to couch and when not to.
But how about the glaive? Anyone tried it on a horse?

Im pretty sure spears take a dmg penalty when used on horseback.
I believe hafted blades are the only polearms that can slash on horseback, all the others can only poke.

But how about the glaive? Anyone tried it on a horse?
As Digglez said Glaive can only stab from horseback. Its very expensive weapon now. 22 pierce dmg and 160 lenght for this price is not worth it for cavalry use.
Glaive is weapon made for infantry.

I and Bifi did some "testing" in the duel server today, and came to some conclusions on lance/weapon on usage for melee cav:
What weapon is best is based on the way you fight. If you like charging in fast with a courser or such, use a lance. Light lance is best for infantry, while normal lance or heavy lance is better vs other cav, though the heavy lance can be too slow. But if its "the one with the longest lance wins"-battle. (pun not intended ;)) the heavy lance might save you, but then its even better to just go for the great lance. So the conclusion on fast horses for versatile situations is the light lance. Its pretty versatile.
However, if you use an arabian warhorse or a desert horse, and play like a high manouvre cavalry man, (you keep whipping back and forth, in an out of range of the enemy) then a faster weapon is better, and the war spear has a small advantage here, since its all about hitting the enemy fast enugh. However, the light lance is able to be used here too.
So all in all I'd go for the light lance. Its cheap, good vs cav, good vs infantry and good at both high speed charging and high-maneuvrebilty-jerking. One thing to note though: if using the warspear and you have either desert horse or arabian warhorse, you are very good vs. infantry, and vs cav if you use your maneuvrebily to your advantage. AND (here is the great thing) you dont have to bring an other weapon for on the ground, which means you can have a shield while on the horse and still have a decent polearm while getting dismounted.
So, as a counclusion, I'd go for either the light lance or the war spear. Depending on the horse you have, your playstyle and if you want to be able to have both a good weapon when dismounted and a shield while mounted.
