What differs damage wise when using the francisca as a melee weapon as opposed to a throwing weapon..can I use it as my primary weapon and feel that it is a viable choice?

I don't see why you wouldn't just use "one handed axe" or "one handed war axe" or similar weapon instead.

I personaly wouldnt make that tradeoff and would take a normal weapon, the range on that trowing weapon mele mode is pathetic

i would use it because you can always look another 1h weapon but throwing ammo is scarce.
i have used the short 0 slot weapons and you should be fine with practice. also people tend to underestimate you when you use throwing weapons for melee

Yep, with the high str you usually have as thrower, one or two blocks + left to right will catch many people off guard and do some nasty damage. You can also use them to kill shields in melee and then retreat back and throw. You should always keep 2 as reserve, so you can throw one when he gets outside melee range. If you are good at blocking or have a shield you can walk over during the fight and pick it up again.
I don't really see why you'd want to use the francisca, any serious thrower has PT higher than the heavy axe requires. For pure melee they are just weaker than normal 1h in all aspects though.

You can see the melee stats in the game if you hold your cursor over the throwing axes in the equipment screen.

I don't know about Francisca, but Heavy Throwing Axes with >5 Power Strike could kill everyone except tincans with <4 hits. For someone with light armor you could do one hit kills with 6-7 Power Strike. But dont try it without a shield...the Axes are rather slow compared to real melee weapons and a length of 55 is a little bit short :)
