Title: How to keep track of a wandering Hermit... (Hirlok going dark...NOT)
Post by: Hirlok on October 23, 2014, 02:20:21 pm
As stated in my "gibbe loomz" thread (http://forum.melee.org/general-discussion/incoming-(l)oomz!-hirlok-gives-away-looms-for-links-and-sexual-favors!/) I have given my loomz to the poor and my loved ones. Most likely I won't be around a lot on the servers for a couple months - and who knows if c-rpg will still be around when I am back to gaming... ;-)

So - for all you beloved headcases that have shared countless hours of fun with me over the past ~ 4 years:

we would not necessarily become "friends" outside of this game, but here in this idyllic space of slaughter and insults we were - and I would like to keep in touch with some of you. Maybe we meet in other games (I might even have lower ping then, LOL) or even IRL when I start traveling the US next spring and find a new Hermit Hut there...

So here is how to track Hirlok the Hermit AKA Martin the Wanderer:

Most of the stuff is "under construction" - I am doing a little personal "re-branding" at the moment, lots of new content incoming over the next months!

Steam: (but won't be much on there as well, since I cut back on gaming in general, not just this mod)
Hirlok the Hermit (who would've guessed...)

Facebook: http://facebook.com/martin.the.wanderer (http://facebook.com/martin.the.wanderer)  (German/English)

Fresh Twitter for my wanderings: http://twitter.com/martinwanderer (http://twitter.com/martinwanderer) (English)

Main Hub for my websites/ "business card" / general bi-lingual newsletter:

http://www.martin-the-wanderer.com (http://www.martin-the-wanderer.com)  (English/German)

My books & courses (mostly German, but also some how-to  and self-development stuff in broken Engerish) will also be announced there.

Occasional YouTube vids (coming up: alternative lifestyle, how-to vids from making bread to knife-sharpening, fitness/calisthenics series, mindmovies, etc.): subscribe to my channels - they are new and empty, but won't be for long... ;-)

https://www.youtube.com/user/martinthewanderer (https://www.youtube.com/user/martinthewanderer) (German/English)

So - see you around - and connect as much or as little as you like ;-)

May the blessings of the Hermit and the scars his arrows gave you be with you on your own wanderings! :)

Martin AKA Hirlok the Hermit

good luck to you Hirlok, even though i hate them all, you were my favorite archer in this mod.

and your not the only one leaving due to this patch.

the combat is better in most every other mod, and this patch has me pretty much goalless xp \ lvl wise. i see no point in building a new char and very little point in grinding my current char

with no point to grind and more fun to be had, im going back to native i guess.

That's not why he's leaving though...

well, it is part of it. Being the type of archer that I enjoy to be (a non-pussy non-running sniper, medium/decent damage, long range shots, longbow) has become a not-so-enjoyable joke in c-rpg. And since I refuse to become an always-adapting min-maxing spineless something, the current state of archery has made my decision way more easy...

I know EXACTLY what all those "friendly" "Hirlok don't go..." posts here and on my gibbe loomz thread mean!!!

You bastards just want me to keep on playing, not getting my books or anything else done, so I never make it to 'murrica, never get better ping, and never kick your asses in melee after I shot you to pieces across the map. Not gonna work.

If you move to Virginia you've got to visit Virginia Beach some time!
I 've only been to Virginia once , and that was at Virginia Beach. The Hotels are very high end so they will be expensive probably at the beach, and there's a small amusement park nearby.

There's also another big amusement park I went to, Busch Gardens in Willaimsburg, Virignia! and I believe it has one of US's tallest or biggest roller coaster, I'm not 100% sure it is still there. Also "garden" is in the name, it should be fun right? :P

LOL - not sure yet when and if (permanently), but basically: Yes!!!

I plan to start traveling the US and a few other places May 2015 - and depending on what comes up and what proves to be easy and what opportunities present themselves - I might set up my basecamp in some remote forest in this crazy country (where I will get crap LTE internet and have 90 ping and the same packet loss as in Paraguay... LOL)

Of course depends on how fast I can fill up that Hermit Relocation Fund - the past years making money was not my primary concern, I don't need much, in Paraguay you can lead a modest life with 200$/month, so I got to ramp up my income "a little" and/or start a successful kickstarter for my original idea of a small ecovillage / self-development retreat.

We will see - and Hirlok might be a more annoying adversary in Bannerlord or whatever we will play at that time... :)

LOL Tiger - thanks for the ideas! actually old Hermit is more amused by a funny bird or his dogs - and a few horses are needed to drag me into one of those crowded "parks", but hey, I'd check it out just for the lulz.  ;-)
Virginia is just one of the places on the shortlist that I want to check out in more detail - I will take my time traveling around, maybe an old camper mobile for some time, and settle down when I find something nice (lonely, forest, a little creek maybe, 40+ acres, AND FUCKING FIBRE OPTIC INTERWEBZ!!!)

Might I suggest Wisconsin? Low population state with plenty of wildlife once you get outside of Milwaukee and the north east parts.

Or if you really want to see nobody then go to Idaho. There is like 6 people in that state and shiternet everywhere.

lol i live about 45 min from Busch Gardens and an hour from Virginia Beach. I dont think you can work at Huntington Ingalls cuz not citizen but theres still a ton of manual labor jobs especially during summer. In smithfield you can work at the ham factories they got some jobs ifr you are looking for work

Northern Georgia is pretty nice for what you're looking for. You've got plenty of places with relatively low cost-of-living and cost of real estate that are out of the way and isolated, and you might get lucky and run across some bomb-ass internet on your hermit ranch.

Good luck with wherever you travel. You've always been one of the only constantly genuinely nice and friendly folks in this game. I'm sorry for running you down in the streets so many times in battle, but you are an archer, after all.

If its a hermitage you want, try upstate NY.  Wilderness for days.  The most you'll find outside of the major cities is agriculture (dairy in particular is big business here).

I'm still nursing the dream that you are actually my childhood sports hero, Jose Chilavert.

how to destroy a dream:
1. look up that name on the interwebz ("who the fuck is Jose Chilavert???" - I am quite ignorant when it comes to sports)
2. the guy is even older than me. By 3 years.
3. weight is about right, but he is 6 cm taller.
4. Must have been quite a legend  - I am not (yet).
4. I no iz play foootboooool. I iz fat meditating Hermit. See:

West Virginia, Washington, Wisconsin, Minnesota, Pennsylvania. All would be good choices, if you can deal with cold and muggy in the fall/winter seasons.

Hirlok, if you don't check out some of the farms out here in California (some of which you could easily intern at and live for free), then you will miss out on a lot!  I also recommend checking out some of our national/state parks in CA.  They're fantastic.  Let me know if you're in San Diego next year!

CA  is on the list as well - actually half the US is, apart from the cities/too populated areas and the really backward / christianist areas and the far north... I will really spend quite some time travelling, maybe work/live on some farm or check out an earth ship project, etc. (can do my internet/writing stuff from anywhere...), see interesting areas in different seasons.... then decide. Or not. Perma-traveling ain't bad either...  ;-)

San Diego? funny. been there as a young journalist (German "Outdoor" magazine, still remember, story on "Eagle Creek" daypack production in Mexico...) - liked it (for a city...).
Will give you a shout for sure when I am in the area!

Whenever I think of siege bros your name usually comes up with the devoted. I know we never talked or were friends. And I know I don't even play this game anymore. Even so, I'm sad to see you go. You seemed to enjoy playing crpg in your own unique way(despite the ping). Although I could never relate, you were always someone I enjoyed seeing in server.

You say that many of us probably wouldn't become friends outside of this game- you could be right. But there was once a time where I could hop onto siege, shoot the shit, and have a blast. You were a part of that. Your impacts are always bigger than you think.

same! I always found you funny and one of the more authentic assholes on the server - and being authentic is among the things the hermit values most. Cyber respect is a funny thing, LOL, but something we had a lot, esp. among the siege players.

Such good stuff. If only I had the guts to leave stuff behind and enjoy a life like this. Being married and a slave to money (though a freelance one) gets you tied up.

The experience is worth it - though you still would be a slave to money, as long as  you want any of the nice shiny things and luxuries we would not want to miss (like Internet and a decent gaming comp... LOL). Life here is cheaper, but on the other hand there are less ways to make money (local wages are terrible) and you still have to buy food unless you want to be a fulltime peasant and have the knowledge for it.

A place to live is the main issue - speculation and corruption has made land crazy expensive almost everywhere on the planet.

but anyways: there is always a way. Webworking is possible from almost any place in the world, and I know people who have "dropped out" with partner and kids - and esp. the kids LOVE it (unless they are already fucked up) because they can grow up in a way more natural way and actually enjoy life instead of being little stressed-out adults...

I could actually webwork and easily sustain a living anywhere on the world with just a moderate internet connection. But my wife would definitely not want to leave an urban life behind altough the idea of it all would sound beautifully romantic to her in the beginning. I love her too much to leave her behind to pursue the spartan life I have been yearning for. Double-edge sword indeed.

Also, I do realize that one can never be fully free from money. The slavery is real wherever you go. Yet there is direct involvement in it and there is avoiding it as much as humanely possible just like you. It still feels good to know that people like you are living that life and making it real while not having to directly severe their ties to the world. It keeps that "maybe" inside every one of us alight

A shitty state? I always laugh when people say that. I live in Potomac, Maryland. It's in Montgomery county. It's the exact opposite of the life of a hermit.
(click to show/hide)
Dan Snyder (owner of the redskins) lives 2 minutes from me. The former shah of iran who fled with all that money lives on River Road. His house is laughably huge. Ted Leonsis the owner of the Nationals and Wizards also lives very close to me. I used to smoke blunts and go look at his house. It's beautiful - and I don't attribute beauty to ostentatious shows of wealth.

You also have bethesda maryland. 2 girls I know very well (friends of the family) go to school with obama's kids at the Sidwell Friends School. Clinton, Gore, and Biden also sent their kids there. Bethesda and chevy chase are just insanely rich it hurts your soul.

The thing is though that 50 years ago potomac was all forest. I have beautiful tree's in my backyard. We have one of the hardest trails on the east coast in terms of hiking. My brother goes on it regularly. Maryland is definitely a beautiful state. There's so many trees and wildlife. My neighborhood alone has 2 government wildlife preserves. All you have to do is google "maryland hiking trails" Just where I live will crush your soul and spirit. Clockwork I don't know where you live in maryland- but you need to move asap. If you don't have natural beauty or materialistic bullshit around you then what the fuck are you doing?

Jerkin it to furries in his dimly lit basement.
