Title: 2H/Polearm WPF distribution
Post by: Mallets on October 03, 2014, 06:15:16 pm
Sorry for another post asking for build advice.  Happen to have 2 characters reaching lvl31 at the same time.  So I had a lvl 30, 2-Hander with a 27/12 build.  I've really enjoyed this build.  1v1 duels were fine, but fighting multiple enemies... I was simply to slow to try and out-maneuver anyone.  So I've just hit lvl 31 and retired... and I'm thinking about an 18/21 build.

For the longest time, I've also thought about making a pure Polearm build (using Bec or Poleaxes... not hoplite, have that on another character).  So may thinking is... why not distribute points between 2H and Polearm.  Thus looking for a little advice on this distribution.

With my 27/12 build, I had 120 WPF in 2H.  Seemed fine.  But of course, I'd love to swing faster.  I could go even with 140 WPF in both 2H and Polearm.  But seeing how I'll probably mainly go 2H (cause it's OP and I love German GS)... I'm thinking about maybe taking more 2H.  I'm not against going max 2H with 170 WPF, but that seems overkill.

So here's my thoughts:

1)  Two Handed: 140
     Polearm: 140

2)  Two Handed: 151
     Polearm: 125

3)  Two Handed: 160
     Polearm: 100

Would love an opinion on which you like best.  Not sure 100 WPF in Polearm would be worth it... but 170 2-hand vs 160 seems negligible.  #1 is tempting.  But #2 is looking more & more appealing.  Having 30 more WPF in 2H (than my 27/12 build) might actually be noticeable.  And since I'll have less PS, I'd love to have quicker swings.

I would go with option 2 if you are definitely going to favor 2h over polearm. 18 agi and 6WM gives you 150ish (153, maybe?) wpf, and typically 18 agi and 6wm is regarded as the "average." With the recent meta being agi builds, the average wpf is probably closer to what you get at 7Wm and 21 agi, which would be 172 or so.

That said, option #1 will only slightly change both your 2h and pole efficiency, since the numbers only differ by 10-15, which as you noted is not much of a big difference. Also, should you start to use poles more and find that you like them more than you previously though, then you will have more wpf in the category you will be using most. What I would recommend is start your build by only increasing the pole wpf, and only use poles right off the bat. Then, when you are a higher level you can decide how much you like poles compared to 2h. If you hate poles, stop adding pole wpf immediately and crank up the 2h wpf. If you find you like poles more than you would have expected, then aim for either option #1 or maybe just go pure pole.

You'll have 3 skillpoints leftover as an 18/21 once you get to level 30 6PS/7WM/7ATH, so you may also want to consider whether or not you want to put some points in shield.

Even 1 point can be a good investment, since it allows you to use Leather Covered Round Shield to supplement your armor vs. ranged attacks on your torso from behind.

Formula for it is your regular armor value + shield resistance + 10. This only counts towards ranged attacks on the back of your torso while you have the shield sheathed though.

Option 1 for 50/50 swapping between weapon types as your main weapon.

Option 2 for mostly favoring 2h, but swapping to pole as your main weapon occasionally.

Option 3 for grabbing a shield + shortened spear/boar spear/military fork/spear to advance vs archers/rear cavalry, but only using 2h as your main weapon.

I suggest going with option 3 as you have the best speed for 2h (Since you love those things), and then still have a strong supplement if you want to use that German GS as a pole-arm for rearing cav.

Then again I may not be the best source as I do have a bias because I use 2h as my main weapon. All the other times I use a swiss halberd for the shits and gigglz and I still do pretty well considering my 1 WPF in poles.

TL;DR: Option 3 because you don't need so much WPF in polearms due to animations and random phenomenon associated with poles.

Option#1 IZ bestest. If you switch 2h wpf for 1h wpf it will be even better using a close range weapon (1h) with a long range weapon (pole).

Being able to use different weapon types allows you to use 2 different types of dmg.. example: spear (pierce) and flanged mace (blunt)
