Title: Gap Year
Post by: Strudog on August 04, 2014, 11:51:39 am
I'm taking a Gap Year this year after just completing university, its always something i have wanted to do and i will be going with a mate of mine. This is a rough list of countries and cities we want to see:

China, Hong Kong, Vietnam, Thailand, Australia, Fiji, New Zealand, Los Angeles, New York City, Las Vegas.

This is pretty much the standard Gap year, but i would like to have some suggestions from people who are well travelled or have been on a gap year themselves about either these destinations and what to see or what countries i should go on and see instead of these ones.

Australia... nice beaches and people are used to backpacking folks. Easy obtainable jobs with pretty fair wages considering...

Edit: meh - just saw that it's already in the list. Over read it. Have fun, don't get mugged.

Thailand - cheap and good food, got food poisoned, women are pretty (when they are women)
Kenya - food poisoned in the middle of the jungle, holy shit the jungle is loud, those apes fuck and scream and kill and i dont knwo whats happening there but its fucking loud
Dubai - well only at the airport, where I almost froze to death due to air conditioning on steroids, while the muslims have a warm prayer place those fuckers, also food poisoned
South African Republic - wild black people are gonna try to rob or kill you there, people go out with armed escorts
Swaziland - literally everyone has aids there, do not touch the girls
Morocco - the arabs are not kind people, place is filled with trash and when you try to snowboard on the sand dunes in the desert and fall you break your bones because it's like falling on stone, also food poisoned
Dominican Republic - humid as fuck and the natives are drunk and if they say they'll do something now it means they'll do it tomorrow also food poisoned
Zimbabwe - everyone is poor and on drugs there, I saw a guy that was leaning on a small tree he pulled out and carried with himself in the middle of the street
Mexico - when I was there, there was a hurricane that destroyed everything lol

have fun :D

Come in Italy , we need all your money , plus , it's an awesome country to visit (not to live) , girls may be not very fuckable because they are very unpleasant sometimes but they are beautiful and tanned.
Then we got Balottelli and Renzi if you need a room entertainer.

Never understood the appeal of "far and exotic" tbh.
I wanna do Caribbeans once, just for the beach, palm and cocktail. Hong Kong once to get the Asian style and vibe.

Other than that, no thanks.

Nonetheless, you have my best wishes for your trip. Stay healthy!

About half the locations in your list are anglo-saxon first world countries, former commonwealth or colonies where english is still the primary language. Not exactly "exotic", depending on what you mean by that.

lol exotic, and then you include America, ill be exotic for you.  Why dont you visit the nations capital, if you do, ill take you to the shooting range and you can fire any of my firearms.

If you do decide to visit America, there are a lot of beautiful cities, or cities that are just so different or historically awesome you should definitely check out.  I cant speak for much past the Appalachians, but i can help with the east coast.

EDIT:
oh damn, you posted before me.

You're just mad that he doesn't want to go to any of the shitty French colonies where AIDS is more common than a job.

Strudog if LiveLeak has taught me anything, it's don't go to China.

Been to South Africa (4 years), New Caledonia (4 months), Australia (2 weeks), Carribean Islands - Martinique (more than 12 times), Israel (Jerusalem only, 2 months).

For a whole gap year, don't go in the Carribeans. You'll run out of things to do, when you're not blocked in the house with no internet because of a cyclone.
Israel seems like a very poor choice at the moment.
Australia seems like a decent option, since you can visit New Zealand and other close countries, while being able to work there. There's Uluru and stuff for all the "earth" people, and some nice bitches beaches for the "water" people.
South Africa was entertaining. And i've got some very sweet memories of that place. As well as a lot of gruesome ones with people being killed in their car while riding in town and (stupidly) stopping at a traffic light. Got robbed twice, and killed our car (4x4) on the typical south african road, while it was raining. If you like to live dangerously, why not. But seems like a gamble.

Good luck for your Gap Year, lots of planning needed !

Sri Lanka is an amazing destination, lots of awesome things to see and experience + it is not too spoiled by tourism, yet perfectly comfortable, if you want it.

I dunno, Tahiti is pretty awesome. Sure, then you have shit like Haiti on the other end of the spectrum. I wouldn't say brit colonialism was exactly a bounty of wealth and prosperity for all of it's colonies either, unless they consisted exclusively of european colons.

I can always suggest India. I've been there 3 times now and it's always a great experience. Friendly people, hectic and some good places to visit. Food is good and varied although had the obligatory messed up stomach on ocassion.

Thailand is also a great option and a fairly standard choice on the backpacker trail. Great food, amazing beaches on the islands and if you do go, I strongly reccomend a visit to Chang Mai in the north to do some proper trekking.

Anyway enjoy. Travelling is always a great experience.

Im in Murica now buddy and NYC is beautiful, I only spent about 20 hours there but I managed to go to a fair few places, it's a really nice city.

Try for Boston and DC too, lovely places top go. I'm in PA right now and theres loads of stuff to go to, just pick a state or two and then just travel within those states, you'll find so many cool places to hang out and chill.

Go to New York's Port Authority. I heard it's the best place in the city.
