Any advice please? Just recently (since approximately June 2014), upkeep is ridiculously expensive all of a sudden. I am wearing the lowest armour possible (approx 210 upkeep per turn MAX!) but my equisite xbow seems to cost me 500+ nearly every single round!!! This cant be right....can it?

Play without xbow.
I also noticed a difference in the repair cost.
Maybe i'm just crazy or unlucky, but i'm playing the same build/armor/weapon since AGES and i always made money. (playing same gears for 2,5years or more)
(Slowly, but yes it's grew up)
Now since some times (i could not say since when but for sure some months already i'm losing so much gold without changing anything in my equipment.
Before in a day session i was making around 10-20k gold.
Now i am losing 10k per session.
So is anything changed recently* in the repair cost ?
rencently* = 2-6months.

I agree. My character is wearing mostly cheap armor (scale mail, leather boots, and other mediocre items) along with a Norse War Sword and Huscarl shield. It's very hard to turn a profit. However, I see folks running around in some very expensive gear every round...
-
Its weird! It only seems to have changed recently. I used to make a small profit each day (4-5K). Now I'm down to 40k! at a rate of losing about 2-3k daily! I cant even wear my more expensive armour for fear of bankruptcy!

I'm just the opposite, since the new balance system came out. Before I only had a little golden stream. Now its like a golden shower! ;)

Play one Generation and sell the Loompoint. (300k)
-
Go back to Native then!
-
Do you have less wpf than then?
WPF influences the likelyhood of an item breaking (less wpf in the respective weapon type = higher chance of it breaking).
There's been a wpf rework since January :D

Thanks for all the replies (except for Hearst, whose peurile & childish comment has resulted in him being reported!

Upkeep seems fine for me, my inventory states mine is "1,481 gold Upkeep (max)" and I seem to be able to do pretty well in game and earn plenty of gold. I guess that's because I use a selection of gear that isn't all expensive and carry just military hammer and shield. You're just very unlucky if your xbow is breaking every round to be honest.
When I played HA + HA/1h hybrid it used to cost me a lot of gold, so occasionally I would just not use my horse and/or use shitter equipment overall, maybe try using a cheaper xbow, or none at all, to earn some gold back.
EDIT: Or like Tibe has mentioned, alts are good for money making if you don't mind losing the exp time, you can make builds that take advantage of cheaper equipment and still be effective, for instance when I played polearm if I wanted to go cheap I'd take lighter armour with just a bamboo spear to poke cavs and players.

Make some speedy ninjaish alt like I did. I made a 40k profit in less than 4 days of playing and I didnt even play that much. Was easy and quite fun. When you got decent agi, speed and blocking skills you dont really need armor that much. I didnt have upkeep problems thou. 2.7k is the max upkeep for me and i've always kinda gotten even. Never really lost or gained at all with my main.

I had a situation with some of the items, when I didn't play with a knightly arming sword, it was fine, making ez moneyz, but when I equipped it, the curse started. Upkeep, every, single, round, I was sent into the realm of Oblivion.

Use Bolts instead of Steel Bolts, use Gloves with ~90 gold upkeep for +3 (if loomed +8) protection for a good price, and don't spawn your crossbow when it's raining, it will have a big damage penalty anyways.

I play using a very high upkeep set, using transitional plate, heavy gauntlets, and different heavy helmets, with a longspear or poleaxe mostly.
I pretty much break exactly even. I do get valour a lot, and I'm likely to be on a good multiplier if clan-mates are on.
Try to find a group to banner up and play with; that'll improve your multi and your fun.
