Post by: wanteds on July 01, 2014, 10:21:00 pm
Im looking for good sci-fi (anime)movies that are in the style of Akira, Ghost in the shell, Blade Runner, Matrix, Patlabor...
They don't make them like back then anymore.

I'll second this, it can be a bit hard to penetrate at times but I ended up liking it alot.

2001: A Space Odyssey + 2010
Total Recall (Arnie version)
Moon
A Scanner Darkly
Pandorum (Sci fi horror)
Source Code
Existenz is kind of mediocre but worth a watch

All I can think of atm

Stargate movie is pretty good.

EDIT: I may get flamed for this, but I actually really enjoyed final fantasy: the spirits within.

Tnx guys, lots of movies.
I've seen Source Code 2x, good movie, seen Dark city and Sunshine too, not bad.
I enjoyed both versions of Total Recall actually.
Tried to watch Equilibrium 2 times, didn't like it.
2001: A Space Odyssey, seen it long ago, but didn't understand anything.

Some other sci-fi I remembered which I also liked:
12 Monkeys
Minority Report
Oblivion (2013)
Serenity
Contact (1997)
Open Your Eyes (1997) (the original version of Vanilla Sky(2001))
Sphere (1998)
Aliens
The Abyss (1989)

haven't seen yet:
Gattaca (1997)
Cargo (2009)
The Thirteenth Floor (1999)
Brazil (1985)
The Island (2005)
Knowing (2009)
The Man from Earth (2007)
Memories (1995)

Alright, keep them coming, anime too!

cloverfield (nice mockumentary still not as good as blair witch project)
watchmen
war of the worlds
riddick series
resident evil series (getting extremely ridiculous but still like it)
event horizon, never seen this one but scares the shit outta people

all movies that are not masterpieces but still pretty enjoyable.

the already cited star wars, matrix, star trek (new ones are cool but too much "american"), 12 monkeys, aliens (one of my fav) the thing (one of my fav) escape from ny/la, something else I don't remember of right now (:

In terms of anime..how about Neon Genesis Evangelion? I think its overrated but its watchable

Full Metal Alchemist or Appleseed possibly? Only saw 1 episode of FMA and I wasn't impressed but might be worth a try. Mean to watch Appleseed some time

Oh and if you liked Serenity then watch Firefly. I liked Farscape too

Animated robots fight each other interspersed with philosophical musings and random mysterious things occur. Its watchable, just don't expect too much considering the hype

Hes seen Akira and Ghost in the shell, can't recommend much else

Saw these movies this week and both were a solid 8.5/10 in my opinion.

Snowpiercer - Lots of mature themes such as social classes, and morality. Very creative settings and narratives.

Dredd - No holds barred sci-fi action. It's well scripted, unlike other CG filled, 500 cuts per second with just as many explosions/I don't know what the fuck is going on movies (I'm looking at you, Transformers).

Yeah, Snowpiercer is pretty neat, lots of references to old French sci-fi comics.

haven't seen yet:
Gattaca (1997)

The Thirteenth Floor (1999)
Brazil (1985)
The Island (2005) <- Okay-ish
Knowing (2009)
The Man from Earth (2007) <- You should definitely watch this
Memories (1995)

Alright, keep them coming, anime too!

Movies:
Children of Men
Pandorum

As for Anime:
Code Geass - not uber scifi, but uber worth it
Cowboy Bebop - how have you not seen this yet faggot, one of the best
Neon Genesis Evangelion - this one is also ok, overhyped though imo
Hyper Future Vision Gunm - short but interesting
Trigun - awesome anime

Snowpiercer

Dredd -

Listen to this man, two of the greatest sci-fis of the past years. Just watched Snowpiercer, and man I really love this movie, so many great things in it. + great music.

mild spoiler
(click to show/hide)

Ah, and I also recommend The Host, from the same regisseur (Joon ho-bong).The new Dredd is also one of the best action movies IMO, so straightforward and cuts out all the unnecessary Bullshit like what a bad childhood the hero had or what.

And as for Anime classy of course Nausicaa and more recent Ghost in a Shell.
