Basically, make it impossible to use more than a certain number of heirloom points in one's equipment.
For example, if I use a +3 deli cap and a +3 KAS, I'm using 6 heirloom points in total.
Depending on the limit (between 5 and 8 seems reasonable to me), this would introduce a new element in build-design. Players would need to make an interesting choice on how to use those limited heirloom points. There would be a real tradeoff between using one heirloomed piece of equipment instead of another. Furthermore it would level the playing field by limiting the heirloom advantage of long term players, and shortening the "grind to maximum effectiveness". This would be a small nerf to ranged, throwers, cav and shielders because those classes use more heirloom points. This would also open up the possibility of making heirloom bonuses bigger again. The trend has always been to nerf heirlooms but if there's a limit to how many heirloom points a long term player can have more than a starting player, then we can think about making heirlooms more "unique" and powerful like they used to be a long time ago.

Interesting suggestion, but I see two problems:
1) Loom choices would probably be not variative at all - for most people it would be weapon + armour, weapon + horse, bow + horse and so on.
2) It would suddenly make it so that everyone has more looms than they are able to use.

Originally this is a reply to a "let's have +5 heirloom bonuses" thread. In that context your second point isn't a problem anymore. And anyway I believe it would be a good thing to devaluate heirloomed items for players who already have many. This means cheaper heirlooms for those that don't have many, and more things in clan armories.
About your first point I think it would only be the case for 2h and polearm players, although even that isn't clear. Heirloom bonuses are not linear so it's reasonable to believe people would want every armor piece at +1 or something like that.
Interestingly enough, this would mean +1 and +2 items would have more value than now, because people would actually need them, in some cases more than +3 items.

Indeed, now I see it's a pretty nice idea, may require some tweaking but in general would lead to more customizaton for our characters.
-
With some tweaking this might indeed become quite interesting. Not sure if a complete reset of loompoints would be required, since this might make certain loomed items almost worthless (+3 boots for example).
This idea will probably get shut down by massive amounts of "I grinded 45 generations, but now I can't use them all QQ" -arguments :D

The devs should allow Kafein to loom his skin, hands and feet so he can have the full advantages of a loomed set without changing his character theme
-
Just make a 3% exp penalty for each heirloom used. Or 1% per loom level.
-
This will fuck up hybrids the most though, so I'm not really pro this argument.
-
I don't really like the idea. We have double xp going on so new players can earn looms very fast. Also, since the looms were changed so that you get most bonuses at first and 2nd loom, there is not that much difference between a guy with full +3 gear and a guy with full +1 or +2.
Besides I think that getting enough money to pay the upkeep is bigger problem. I'd sort of like the idea of loomed items having higher upkeep, but that too would just hurt new players more than old.
-
I also don't have any looms for my alts, but I decided to spread out my main's skill points over multiple areas so I rather am able to play them all vs a fully loomed twohanded str crutcher who only uses his loomed armourand sword.

I don't really think it does hurt hybrids that much. Of course if you use 4 items and a horse and everything you use is +3 it's going to hurt. But yet again, that's only a problem if you expect to play with a full +3 set. There are many ways to buff hybrids in order to compensate.

Well no, double xp rewards everybody equally without taking their level and amount of looms into account. That's like saying a flat revenue tax rate is fair for the poor.

I think the main issue is that this is probably going to make a lot of people end playing the game and increase the rate at which the server population declines. Probably not a good idea at this point.

Say, if some old player has 10 mw items and he gains 3 more at the same rate as new player, what's the problem? They both can only use one set at a time. And at that point the few lp difference in equipped armor is marginal. Dozen of unused mw items in the inventory won't make any difference.

They should be sidegrades rather than straight upgrades. That would make them desirable still as people like variety and customising their character, and I don't think people would like losing a sense of progression or long term goals by limiting how many they can wear at once.
Looming should increase some stats while reducing others, or add negative traits. Like armour gets + weight when loomed and they could cost a bit more to repair. A +3 weapon might get + damage but - speed or something.
