Title: Green Lake, Austria (Pepe request)
Post by: Grumpy_Nic on May 31, 2014, 12:42:14 pm
Was scuba diving on friday and wanted to make some photos for Pepe but unfortunately the batteries for my camera flash were empty
(click to show/hide)
so I used a gopro to capture some impressions. I'm not used to filming so its a bit wobbelydobbely but I hope you like it.

Its a lake in Styria (Austria) which usually dries up in autumn and fills in spring when the snow of the surrounding mountains is melting. Thus the water is usually pretty cold (6°C) but crystal clear. The weather was pretty rainy for the last days so its not perfectly clear but still amazing for a lake. In other lakes you sometimes dont see further than 2m.

Exactly
Sometimes, when the water rises even higher there is also a wooden bench thats underwater, looks pretty nice. That little bridge at the end is usually up in the dry aswell during autumn.
Its just great to be able to dive in a surrounding thats usually found only above water :)

Holy Shit, that was a really cool Video Nic thanks for sharing, it really looks beautiful there I'm very jealous, is this in the Austrian Alps?

The clarity of that water as you say is stunning, I hope Climate Change wont fuck up these precious spots in the future. But like Frank said there may well be more things to dive for soon with rising sea level D:

Edit: I googled mapped it :D

Yes, I filmed it

Next weekend I'm going to dive in some other lakes, Fernsteinsee, Samarangersee and Blindsee which are also known for extremely good view. I'm gonna make some pictures and videos again. Pretty excited because I've never been there before and I've seen some pictures that look awesome. In perfect condition it looks like the divers are flying in the air because the water is so clear.
Hope we got that next weekend

The first eight seconds of it was probably the best thing I've ever seen.

Wow that is an awesome dive spot! Really good visibility and awesome views!

What was your max depth and did you use wetsuits or drysuits?

I just started diving a couple months ago (only have 12 dives logged), been doing at least a couple dives every weekend. Did my first night dive last weekend, I haven't started taking a camera but here's a picture of me on my 2nd dive for the open water certification in Kailua-Kona, Hawaii.

Lol...nice one pepe.

In austria I mainly use my drysuit since temperatures are pretty low in mountain-area lakes. Especially if you go below about 15m.
Green lake is pretty shallow, it was about 7-8m, the depth depends very much on how much snow is melting in the surrounding area as it gets filled up by it.

Hope you get into diving Hans, it can be really relaxing at times cuz its just so peacefull and quiet down there. From time to time I just pick an underwater spot and sit around there, watching fish and listening to my own breathing and nothing else

Edit: and dont hurry too much in taking a camera with you, make sure you are good at diving first before you occupy your hands too much underwater. Otherwise you'll start rising and dropping all the time.

Ah cool, didn´t know that Green Lake actually WAS green underwater :o

With all the grass, paths and other stuff it looks as if you´re flying over some landscape, really pretty
