Title: Subliminal messages and advertising
Post by: Umbra on May 17, 2014, 04:50:39 pm
Gonna start with a pretty fucked up video.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WDsI-zk6gfE

Does it work, do you have any instance where you bought something and later realized you were subconciously motivated?

Bullshit video. "within 30 secundsz of watching television u go to alphawave state!! then u cant think anymor at ALL and accept everythink!!"

The whole concept of subliminal messaging is super exaggerated anyways. OK, so there's messages like "trust the US government" hidden in there... wow! Amazing. And? Why should that have any more influence on anyone than seeing Walt say "cook meth" on Breaking Bad? It's exactly the same thing.

There is a bit more than just trust the US goverment in there. You got stuck up on the rambling of the stupid woman on the beginning, the important bit is towards the end.

Trust the US goverment
God is real God is watching
Rebelion will not be tolerated
Obey constume Obey consume
Worship consume obey believe
Buy ultra buy Naomi

Also, this was broadcasted on National television every single day, for years. So its a bit more sinister. Tho i have no fucking clue what the last bit is.

I don't feel as affected by television (besides radio shows and podcast- for some reason, that seems to have a distinct effect on me) or most forms of visual display. Word of mouth is still the most effective thing, from people whose opinions you respect. As far as subliminal messages go, I think it's BULLSHIT.

Uh, if you'd watched the video, you'd know what the last bit is...

And yes, there's lots of stuff like that. So what? If it was the 60s now, it would be pretty big news. But seeing as nobody that was responsible for TRYING this pseudoscience on the masses is in the government anymore, meh...

I highly doubt the effectiveness of subliminal messages. Framerates on TVs didn't improve much, hence it's not possible to do much better. Besides, even though "obey consume" is sinister, other kinds of advertisement are just the same. TV adverts build a world of norms. And it's so pervasive that you can immediately see when there's something "wrong".

Ask yourself why you buy a smartphone every year, you'll find the answer if this is real and happening or not.

In fact video game ads are the only ones that ever had a tangible effect on me up to this point.

This.

Especially gameplay trailer endanger my purse massively.

And on that mobile phone thing: In Germany it used to be the way that you'd sign a contract with the provider for 24 months. After 18 month you could re-sign for another 24 months. When you did, you got a massive discount on a new phone, most of the time even for just a symbolic price of 1€. That's why most people used to have a new phone more or less every 24 months.

That's not common anymore and now you see a lot of people running around with phones older than the 24 months cuz the discounts dropped.

To me it's more about awareness. I don't watch generalist VG websites closely hence I can miss some things.

The problem with subliminal messages that are supposed to manipulate the brain, is that it becomes you: how can you say it didnt work, since if it did you couldnt say if it did or not yourself?
Even if it failed and produced no results, they tried.

Also, for the same reasons they experienced this on humans before, they could be trying other techniques today.
