Title: Dangerous Rays
Post by: Leshma on May 11, 2014, 02:31:04 pm
Another fully procedurally generated game made by one dude (anyone remember Limit Theory?) this time set in apocalyptic world. Development of the engine started back in 2011. by a lonely french dude named Franck Poulain (http://www.lonelybitsgames.com/mainsite/thefounder), one man team called Lonely Bits Games and he refers himself as we in every press material (hella weird, but he wants to create an impression of more serious project). Game is currently in early alpha stage and these videos will explain some of the features better than my words:

One of the most interesting things you can find on his site is explanation why he doesn't use Kickstarter to gather funds:
Quote
Q: Why you don't make a Kickstarter?
A: We don't want to make any false promises. We are not the kind of developers to say "our game will be awesome", "best game ever" and ask for 60000$. We are making the game, we release the early alpha version then you can see if you are interested or not before giving your money to us.

Q: What were the development costs till now?
A: Approximately 6000$ (Yes 6000 not 60000), work in a garage and just eat pasta, that is the secret !

Looks decent, but didn't see any actual gameplay in those videos. Still have no idea what it's about.

Procedurally generated world (with quests designed in the same sense). A bit like The Forest or more akin to Stalker. You're in the world where you need to survive. Not sure will there be "main quest", from what I've read there won't be such a thing. Enemies are zombies or mutants or whatever. Game is strictly singleplayer.
All in all, typical rogue-like survival single player game set in irradiated apocalyptic world with zombies/mutants as main enemies, with some very advanced physics.
Shame he didn't go for full realism. His wood chopping animation is good but there could be more variants of that animation. Also, trunk should fall and stay there so player could chop it just like irl, into planks. Similar should be done for lighting fire. If he went through all the trouble to simulate wind and wood catching fire in realistic manner he could make it so you hold a fire source in order to put plank on flame, instead of just picking option from the menu. When you go into such tiny details, better make sure you go all the way

Why don't you suggest it to him?

a) haven't bought his alpha yet b) i'm fairly sure he knows that himself
Must say, I dig ballistics part the most of all the things he has done.

I absolutely respect the development path he has chosen. The number of all those probably-not-to-be-ever-completed early access games straight out of Kickstarter is nauseating already. Good thing that this guy does something different and avoids sounding too pretentious.

That looks quite good, but apart from surviving what are the dangers?
All I see is - hunger, thirst, fire, shelter - what are the guns for? Irradiated mutant frog things or bandits, zombies what? There are too many survival games of late cropping up
