Title: Medieval wood

So, me and me pops went to ram poles into the ground to make a fence but before we did so we smeared black goo over it to preserve it.

Was this also done in medieval times? I think its a sort of Tar..?

They do the same thing with roofs. It's some sort of tar yes, coal based or otherwise, depending.

Thanks for the info, guess its a bit of a lame question but I was just pondering about it :P
