Title: Could anyone fill me in on war of roses please?
Post by: Nightmare798 on May 02, 2014, 12:37:48 am
I have heard that the game is horrible, but what exactly makes it so? I was thinking of trying it, but I hear people saying all the time the game sucks tragically. What gives?

If you didn't play it yet, don't start thinking about it!

It's bad and it's dead.

They already replaced it with War of the Vikings. They only changed the theme but the game itself is probably similar. At least it was when I played the Beta. :P

Here is my thread in the game's subforum: http://forum.melee.org/war-of-the-roses/my-view-of-the-game/

Things are a bit outdated in that thread but overall, not much has changed. Want a to-the-point opinion? It has pretty graphics and that is all. Despite the things it tries so hard to achieve and the ones it actually achieves, it is still no match for Warband.

there were quite a few things I actually like in war of the roses, didnt play it much tho

but most of those things seem to be cut out for war of the vikings. basically super simplistic chivalry outsold them, so they decided to dumb down the game alot to compete it seems (mounted combat, build customisation etc).

I think the already existing threads about it should have filled u in more than enough, so u shouldnt have made another thread for it. Damn it man, we even have a separate board for it. What more do u want?

I've only tried it once, but I'd probably play it if there was no WB.

Its fun, but after an hr or so you are done with it and install WB again.  :P

The first 20 hours were fun for me but then I played Warband, then WotR again and it sux balls.
Because?
Because the fighting system is fucked, it's laggy, cav is 10 times more OP than cRPG's. And every1 there has no right mouse button. Nuff said

thats because it punishes good behavior like blocking by eventually breaking your weapon if you block too much.

The xbow has a minigame that u must play to reload, and it will one shot u from across the map.

Every cocksucker in that game has some sort of one shotting maul that makes your head explode when they hit u regardless of armor.

the bow also has a short minigame to pull the bow back if i remember, like aligning stuff in a circle for accuracy or something.

If you want to get anywhere near any of the good weapons, you will end up buying gold to spend it for in game purchases.

I just asked since I got a new comp and I am searching for new stuff to play. And if you dont like me making a new topic then simply ignore it.

So, in the esence, pay2win micro transactions.  No way I am touching that.

Not true at all. You will buy gold if you feel like supporting the devs or if you are a snotty spoiled little kid who can't play the damn game to make progress.

By playing, you earn gold. Play long enough and you can get anything. There are some really expensive items, which go super cheap with special holiday discounts (on christmass for example) and you can grab them before grinding the money too.

TL;DR: It is not necessary at all to buy gold. Think of that only as a donation function.

So it is like earnable in-game currency that can also be bought with real life cash, but it is not necessary to do so, right? I thought it was buy only currency.

not pay2win, but pay2notgrindforfuckingever, no think of it like World of tanks, except, that while you started with your loltraktor, everyone else already has their maus' in the same battlefield.  Yes, you can grind if you want, but considering it would be easier to put down 20 dollars and buy the damn 1.5 million gold sword rather then put in 400 hours to buy the same item.

honestly, its free, just download it, and come to your own conclusions.

Combat completely lacks feedback and is full of MMOish powers and perks that absolutely ruin the few things this game had going for it. Executions are silly. The armor mechanics are the kind of thing you'd see in a RPG, it doesn't work at all in an action game. All in all, it's so badly designed that it's broken. This game's combat is the antithesis of M&B when it comes to design (in directional melee combat games). There are a million perks and moves, but none of them work organically with the rest of the game. Everything you can do besides attacking and blocking feels like a skill copied from a tab target MMORPG, completely out of place. As if all that was added to compensate for how terrible the basics are. The opposite of M&B in which there is little variety of moves but there is a deep interaction between everything.

True Nightmare man. You earn ingame cash, just as a sense of progression actually. They just sell you shitton of gold for a few bucks only if, as I said above, you don't feel like grinding it yourself within the game. And it is not impossible. There is just a reasonable amount of gold grinding involved. You eventually get the gold and items you want. That is it.

That doesnt sound very balanced, nor fun. I giess the flak the game gets is deserved after all.

Nvm gonna try chivalry instead.

I simply don't recommend either of them. Seriously, one is nothing but eye candy and the other is just a bug-ridden, clunky and sluggish arcade wanna be. I'd say save your bucks for something else but it's your call in the end.

Just tried it again the other day, and what a letdown.
