So, I went to take a look on hardware in my local pc shop, and I found desktop with following specs for 392 dollars:
Dual core 3.4 GHZ
1 TB hard drive
1 gb graphics
windows 7
6gb of RAM
The pc boots normally and seems to have no problems whatsoever.

Not enough details to make a proper assumption.
I bought a similar board/cpu/8GB ram from a friend of mine about 2 years ago for 130€. Bought a HD6870 for 150€ back then and I am still running current games at max settings and 1680x1050. Overclocked the cpu [email protected] easy with the board settings and stock cooling. Runs like a charm.
Oh, and maybe see if the price is negotiable. Flashing 320$ cash in front of them may make them sell it anyway.
-
Those specs are not enough to judge. It could be worth much less or more depending on the CPU model (you only listed frequency) and the graphics card model (you only listed memory).
-
2nd handed for that money and those specs
no

no
Honestly though, I was looking at the prices of desktops and components on the internet and I cant find much better deals at this price tag.

Sorry to be rude, but your friend is either a really nice guy, or an imbecile. And no, I dont think the price is negotiable. Remember, I want to buy, but they dont necessarily have to sell it to me.

Easier said than done.

I wouldn't buy second hand parts for my main rig from anyone I didn't know and trust well. The parts may appear to be working fine and even look fine, but until you get to stress the PC over a longer period of time you will never know how well the parts are working and you will also never know the kind of wear and tear these parts have been put through before they ended up in your hands .
You can take the risk and spend all your dollars on it, but don't be surprised if they aren't working too well under stress or maybe some months down the line one of the components shits itself and dies. You could say I'm being pessimistic, of course these parts could be in great condition and work great for some years to come. But you will never truly know that and if they die on you, you have no warranty or anything of that kind to replace the parts you bought, leaving you with a non functioning PC and making you spend more money to replace the part.
IMO, you should be patient, save your $400 and keep saving that money until you can buy your own brand new rig somewhere inbetween low and high end, you can get some decent rigs for good prices that will run most brand new games on good enough settings to still look nice and run smoothly. The mistake some people make when it comes to PC's is that they aren't patient enough, they would rather blow their money on a rig to play stuff ASAP, when 6 months down the line they could have saved more money and bought a more far more powerful rig that will last a lot longer.

You can get a desktop to use at home and a laptop to bring around.

He is my friend
In my experience, people will sell if you flap cash in front of their faces.
Even new stuff in big markets, for example when it's the last one they have, you can get a discount but you have to ask. Every shop has some kind of discount policy the salesmen can use on the fly. If you don't ask, you won't get it ofc. If he says "No.", no harm is done by asking.

I would like to get a new pc asap, before I get a new job. I can always buy brand new after getting the job, but I swear to god that if I have to put up with that P4 with 3600HD and 1.5gb ram I will kill myself.
The thing is that the rig we are talking about is the owners old pc he bought 2 years ago, and he added it to inventory because he bought a new better one, so I dont think it is worn down.
-
It's not about the components being worn out, it's about what they are. If the cpu and gpu are decent (not enough info to judge atm) it might be an ok-ish deal, if they are low end it's a complete ripoff.
-
Uhhhhhh just learn to build your own PC... It's a skill that is SUPER valuable and really easy to learn. Also once you do, you'll be able to answer that question for yourself.
Just open the cover of the one you have and start screwing around. Most of the time you can replace parts and/or create/upgrade to something that costs hundreds if not thousands less then buying from a manufacturer.
But as far as your question goes, you need to research each part in order to determine the true value.

You should check out the DIY PC combo kits on newegg...
http://www.newegg.com/DIY-PC-Combos/PromotionStore/ID-33/Page-3
I would recommend forking out a few hundred dollars more and getting something for around 600-700$... It will really be worth it in the long run imo.
But if your budget is set at about 400$, I'm pretty sure you can build something better, as well as brand new, for the same sum of money.
Building a PC is easy... for me, the only pain in the ass is the software aspect... installing the OS, Drivers, and networking it. But its really not that hard... just annoying (imo)

I have checked the specs...
The cpu is beast, but it has integrated gpu, and I am not sure if I am comfortable with that. Besides, does that system come with preinstalled win7 64bit?
-
New systems come probably with Win8 by now.
Pray it's not 8.1 cuz it seems there are quite the issues with it. Tho they may have fixed that by now - dunno for sure.
Still, get us detailed specs on that used one and we might actually give proper advice. Those things you wrote about it are plain useless.
-
You need to collect much more details about what you're going to buy because otherwise it just looks like if you were hesitating to buy a used black car with 4 doors and 200 horse powers.

Well I recall some other details
The gpu is AMD radeon series.
The cpu is AMD athlon series.
I listed the price in dollars to create a wider idea of true price. Unfortunatelly, hardware prices in my country are quite high, and I am not sure about the shipping costs to europe.
Most of the stuff I have seen at this price range has either integrated GPU (never again), or overall sucks.
EDIT: I think I found the cpu in question: http://www.superbiiz.com/detail.php?name=ADX270OCBX

I'm afraid you need to give us the exact details if you want a useful response.

Hmm, the problem is the shop is closed for weekends, so I have no way to verify.
-
Then ask them for a full detail list on Monday and asked for details when the stuff was bought and put together, how long it was used etc. Actually they should also check the hardware, doing some tests and more (at least for the graphic card there are many testing programs).
Btw I'd rather get Win 8.1 and not Win 8 now, or not? I thought Win 8.1 was supposed to fix stuff and mistakes they made in Win 8. It's not like an update xp -> vista? :p

not worth $400

If the rest of the rig plays in the same league as the CPU I'd say it isn't worth more than $250.
-
Like others said, with that CPU 400 dollars is a complete ripoff.
-
With that cpu the 1GB video card cant be better than an old 4850 or 550TI I supsect.
-
Lol is that really the level of hardware? the guy is trying to rip you off, not only are they second hand, but I wouldn't even pay that money if those parts were brand new.
-
make sure they guy has no Haxor for life t shirts etc first

Yeah I don't have much first hand experience with integrated graphics so I can't really give you much information on that. If I was buying I would probably get one with a video card because that's what I've always done. As for the systems coming with windows... I don't believe they do, they don't mention anything about windows coming pre-installed so I'm guessing they don't, still I don't think that should make you shy away from building your own.
Check out this DIY build kit...
http://www.newegg.com/Product/ComboBundleDetails.aspx?ItemList=Combo.1606890
569$
AMD FX-6300 Vishera 3.5GHz (4.1GHz Turbo) (6 core) Socket AM3+ 95W Desktop Processor
GIGABYTE GV-R726XOC-1GD Radeon R7 260X 1GB 128-bit GDDR5 PCI Express 3.0 HDCP Ready Video Card (Model:GV-R726XOC-1GD)
1 tb hard drive
8gb ddr3 1600 memory
Decent looking case, and a nice Mobo to boot.
Would last you for years... It's a good video card but if you ever need more that's a simple upgrade.. and you can just buy 2 more sticks of the same ram for 16gb memory.
I'm going to be buying something like this within the next few months, my current system is on its last limb and I'm still using windows vista
I would check the shipping costs to europe, you can add the kit to cart on newegg and then type in your zip code to estimate shipping costs. Windows OS new will run you about 100-140$ I think.

I would rather not touch win 8 altogether,

What am I to do then? buy the hardware over internet? what if it comes damaged? and even without that, I would still have to buy a new OS.
The hardware itself costs about 274, but it comes with preinstalled win 7. Considering that I would buy a new pc altogether, Ill give at least 180 for cpu, gpu and the motherboard, if not more. And where is the PSU, RAM, DVD drive, Sound card, Hard drive, and case?

If I had that kind of money, I would not even think about buying a second hand pc. But honestly, the price is about 50% more of what is in my pocket right now.

Buying an OS? :okay:
So.. you would rather get ripped off and give your money to a dickbag like that, than order parts that "could be" damaged?
You stating that as a potential risk and con is hilarious.

I would have to buy a new os for 100 and that would leave me with about 280 in my pocket.
I looked at the logical increments and with that kind of money, I would land in poor category with integrated GPU.
Like honestly, I dont really think that he is trying to rip me off. I said it is a dual-core athlon with 3.4Ghz frequency, but I dont really know if it is the exact cpu I listed above. It is 374 and it comes fully assembled with preinstalled system.
And what exactly is so bad about that cpu I listed above?
-
Find out the model numbers of the mobo, the processor, and the graphics card when you get the chance. Also find out the specifics on the Ram... DDR2 800? DDR3 1600?
When we know the specifics of what you are pondering on purchasing secondhand someone can give you a definite answer on if it is a rip off, or a fair price.
My advice would be to save up a bit more and be patient, then buy something you won't need to replace or upgrade within the next few months or years.
-
It would be a complete joke when it's an AMD apu.
Wouldn't be bad when it it a good one like the A10 6800K or the A10 7850K but instead you will get something like this:
http://www.cpu-world.com/CPUs/Bulldozer/AMD-A4-Series%20A4-5300.html
A zippy dual core with a slow integraded gpu.
