Title: What is your all-time favorite beer...
Post by: Sir_Hans on March 22, 2014, 08:03:01 am
You can only choose one!!!!!

I've only tasted a small percentage of beers on the planet, but so far... here is my favorite:

Deschutes Brewery out of Bend Oregon... Mirror Pond Pale Ale.

I just moved to hawaii and I was completely stoked when I found out they import it to the islands... It costs like 11$+ for a 6 pack here!!! (like 7$ or 8$ in california) but it's still worth it!!! <3

It's made from unfiltered ingredients and gives it nice full flavour you don't get from other beers. Only sold in the close vicinity of Bremen...

Puntigamer is good too, though. I also like Budweiser a lot (the real beer, not the American crap).

'Twas some Scott ale, can't remember the name to save my life, though.  :)

Oh don't even get me started on the prices here in Finland. It is usual for a 6pack of 0.33cl beercans/bottles of the cheapest sludge to cost above 10 euros.

Well, it is a barleywine and not a beer, but...

Boneyard Barleywine from the Trout River Brewing company in Vermont. They come in growlers (1/2 gallon brown jug)

Quote
Boneyard Barleywine

8.0% ALCOHOL

Classically styled Barleywine with a superb balance of malt and hops. This is a big, bold ale with fruity and floral characteristics.

My favorite beer is the one I get invited to.

Joke aside I prefer darker beers, but this country is really shit in variation when it comes to beers, or anything really :/

Other than pálinka. You can make pálinka out of fucking anything.

Despite loving darker brews (especially Czech), I love many Danish beers from Carlsberg and Tuborg, especially 'Gyldne Damer' ('Golden Ladies'):

Ahhh.

I have an opportunity to visit Budapest on June 12, followed by Vienna on June 16th. I'm thinking of anything would highlight the difference in beer quality and availability that trip would do it. I've got too much already going on this summer with my son heading to Beijing in June and my wife and daughter going down to Cali at the same time so I'm going to pass on it. Maybe if it was Japan instead!

The U.S. had the problem with piss poor beer for a number of decades, but the rise of the microbrewery (and Sam Adams) has made things quite a bit different for the beer drinker nowadays.

nomnomnom... one of the things I am missing here in Paraguay: decent beer...

the local stuff is rather light and well... ummmm.... not so tasty.

you find just a few imported ones, they are expensive, and not the ones I prefer...

So, two sweet memories:

It's not necessarily the quality, but the diversity.

Too many pale lagers. Not enough darker or more interesting stuff. That goes for shops that is, I don't have a brewery or pub that sells more interesting stuff around here, iirc. The problem is that I live in a small town and markets only sell crap, or expensive stuff that is still crap. Only some are really good, rest is mediocre.

From the dark ones I really like this, it's like dark staropramen, but slightly different.

Here's my top 3:

visitors can't see pics , please register or login

1) Dogfish Head Birra Etrusca Bronze - Dogfish Head has a series of drinks based off of ancient recipes. There's others based on Egyptian and Chinese recipes thousands of years old. The Etrusca mimics the recipe of bronze age Etruscan drinks, based on chemical analysis of jars from bronze age burial sites in the area. It contains gentian and myrrh, along with other ingredients you would be hard-pressed to find in any modern brews. This was the noble drink of the Mediterranean before wine become commonplace. It is absolutely delicious, and worth the cost ($10-15 a bottle, about the price of mid-tier wines around here). Lots of unfamiliar flavors that are bitter, herb-y, and musty. Not something I would drink every day, but a great treat now and then.

2) Wychwood Hobgoblin Dark English Ale - Nutty and smokey. Goes great with rich food like steak and fries. A good drink to sip slowly while you linger around the bar.

visitors can't see pics , please register or login

3) Stone Smoked Porter - a lot of Stone's stuff is way too hoppy for me. They just go overboard and it feels like a contest to make the most intense and bitter beer possible. The smoked porter is plenty bitter, but not insanely so. It is amazing with sweet and spicy food like BBQ/Thai/Malaysian/Indonesian dishes. I don't really care for it on its own, but it complements these foods perfectly. I'd take it over a paired wine any day.

When I'm out at a random bar with friends I usually go for Shock Top or a Saranac pale ale (a local brand). Reasonably priced, and beats pisswater lager. If it's fall I will drink all the pumpkin ales. Haven't met one I didn't like. They're also usually really cheap or the special of the day/week.

I agree, but I think Golden Ladies has something special for a non-particular brew, if you could say that. Perhaps it is the golden-clad ladies serving them.

Fantastic beer.

Have tried it three times in my life. Twice in Belgium, and once in Finland. It's like a meal and fine wine in one. But I'd still hesitate to call it my all-time favourite, there are too many contenders.
