Most people do not care about the history of realism, they care about fun. Therefore, the game is built around fun, for the majority who play balance. This includes ensuring that the remote is not too intense fighting game is played by big, because it has an amazing melee gameplay. No one will care at all M & B, if it has sub-par melee mechanics, but they will play a range of mechanical eventhough underdeveloped. There are not many choices for people who like to fight in the game, but there are lots of options for people who like to shoot things (even in a medieval environment)
Not to say that realism is not important in its own way, and I'm not saying that a strong range is more realistic (and especially not ride a horse shot), because we do not even have a real penetration systems, armor (chain plate than now playing much better on impermeable).
Just say, first and foremost aim of the game is a realistic way the developers have chosen, then it is balanced is fun.

No one would care at all about M&B if it had sub par melee mechanics, but they will play eventhough the ranged mechanics are underdeveloped. There aren't many options for people who like melee gameplay but there are lots of options for people who like shooting stuff (even in a medieval setting)
Not saying realism isn't important in its own way, and i'm not saying that strong ranged is more realistic (especially not shooting while riding a horse) because we don't even have a real penetration system for armour (chain and plate would be much better than now against projectiles that don't penetrate).
Just saying that first the game is designed to appear realistic in ways the developers chose, then it is balanced to be fun to play.
