Fights wouldn't last so long if we tweaked blocking a bit. Not too much, just enough to shorten the fights a little. I'd propose:
More weapon stun when you block
Take out blocking left side attacks with the right block (and vice versa), or make the angles much narrower. Side blocks feel too easy

What about we forget about nerfing skill like you are suggesting?
What about we just make people die when you hit them? I can't stand having to hit some players 8 or more times in order to defeat them.

Making something harder doesn't necessarily nerf skill. ATM if someone does a side swing it doesn't matter if you choose the correct side block, you just turn a bit and it still blocks. That rewards mistakes and lazy fighting. Imagine if you could hold down block and aim up to do an upblock? It would make the game easier to play and reward skill less because you can recover from a mistake easier
Weapon stun means you have to consider your position more. If you away from the block with footwork you get less stun don't you? Or if an attack comes from your right side you have to move to the right or you will get hit by the opposite side when you are stunned and miss your attack window. You have to be faster to get the correct block incase you get hit again and get in better positions. Harder blocking and longer block stun makes position more important and movement
If it takes 8 hits to kill someone you are probably using a shield? You get a much easier time with defence in that case so it balances the slightly lower damage

Lol pointless, most the community and new players find it hard to block now.
So it won't shorten fights as it totally depends on the person/people you are fighting.
And going back to blocking left for the opposite swing is also realsitic as if you turn to the side you are still going to block it so i don't see the problem their either.
Don't think ot's needed but thats just my opinion :)

I completely agree. Whenever I played FPS games, I always did so in hardcore servers (where bullets dealt much more damage). In cRPG, sometimes it feels exactly like Kafein said. I think that nerfing armours' protection values to have a hardcore cRPG where blocking really matters would be nice (buffing weapons' damages would be more complicated I guess).

I usually die in 2-4 decent melee hits with 64 armour and 63 HP. Its down to the player to make the hits do decent damage, if you take 8 hits to kill someone you're probably doing something wrong.
Hold attacks, aim for the head, get speed bonus, hit in the sweetspot etc.
The reason the game is all about the ganks isn't how many hits it takes to kill someone, its that you have to time 2 hits together or swarm people so they can't block everything reliably. If we had more risk with the blocking system we would have less ganking and fairer team fights

Deadlier melee-combat +1, just keep ranged and cav relatively the same as now.
Also I feel that chambers aren't really rewarding you enough :\

+1 for this part. Hate to see people block a side swing because of this mechanic. There is no reason for it, side swings were easy enough to block before.

Why change L/R blocking?
If I'm blocking against a horizontal strike, the only thing that should matter is whether or not my weapon catches the enemy attack before it hits my body. Who cares which "side" I'm holding my weapon on?

Make auto-blocking easier.

I also think we should remove all projectile weapons, horses, polearms, 2h weapons, armor, and metal 1h weapons.
Make Cudgels 2 hit kill and enforce donkey spawning for everyone.
This will revive the mod.

I dont think removing L/R blocking is such a good idea it takes away a factor that enhances a fight. It would be just a fight of ringaround the rosey between two people who try to get on the opposite side of each other and swing first. At that point might as well take blocking out of the mod overall and just spam eachother to death....
