Title: Are anonymous sign ups really a good thing?
Post by: GOBBLINKINGREATLEADER on February 24, 2014, 08:43:08 pm
Lets be honest here, half of rosters are now comprised of names like "SandysGayDad", "HUGEF4GTRON9000", and "Hospitaller_Kesh". Now I'm not saying I don't enjoy that, but aren't the devs like tryhard nerds trying to encourage roleplaying? Previously only like 1/5th of rosters had totally stupid names, now its like half. I don't really see the point of having it except for allowing people to sign up for AI villages.

What do you nerds think about it?

More like the anonymous sign ups should be added after the AI fiefs are taken.

Abusing AI roster decisions is bannable, but humans do rollcalls (+ those who do can see the real names) and trolls/betrayals and subsequent dramas fit perfectly with strategus

i like anonymous sign ups but to avoid confusion it should really just list anonymous people as "Anonymous" instead of letting them troll people and cause shit by signing up using other peoples names and so on.

I think if you want to go anonymous it's fine. But there should be no name for you then.
Every anonymous player shoud get assigned a number and that's it.
e.g. Anonymous 01
That would solve the problem with pirating names, using to long names, or creating stupid(offending) names.

edit: damn Matey was typing faster

anonymous sign ups are awesome i love that feature

you play a lot of battles on strat and being forced to fight on the same side every damned time is boring as hell

it's also bags of fun having psyuednyms

I reckon the intended main purpose of this was to avoid the inevitable mid-late game barrage of "omg wtf you are betraying us" and "y r u not fighting 4 us?!?!" etc etc over steam or voice communication when you sign up for the "wrong" side.

The purpose I enjoy more is crude and silly psuedonyms, which is more than likely going to be the actual main purpose of this feature.

(my opinion is that it is a good thing, but I am obligated to vote for the third option for obvious reasons)

It's great I love poopy names and gay shit. I'm sure medieval people would have thought similarly.

Yeah I'm sure there was a lot of poop, fart and gay jokes in medieval times.  I think it's a great feature...wish I could play in strat battles myself...still leveling up my next gen:

Anonymous sign ups are great because you can fight without people accusing you of betraying alliances or ~non-aggression~ pacts simply by being a merc.

One potential issue is the possibility for people to sign up for the ai anonymously, and then purposely not show up.  Although players could do this anyways,  the pseudonyms make it harder to see who the culprits are.  Don't know if it's a problem yet,  but the anonymity of signing up will sure make it easier.

It won't be a problem once the ai fiefs are taken, but there are a lot of castles/cities to take.

I think the ai being able to hire 91 people versus 51 for players solves a lot of this.  Even with the no shows you should equal parity in numbers as most of the ai castles and cities should get close to max signups.

That's why they have like twice the amount of people who can sign up for AI since there's no roll call...I still think it's better than the alternative (where people are scared to sign up because they get badgered or threatened by people that signing up for AI is tantamount to an aggressive act towards their faction).

We need to fix it so it just shows the generic battle banner instead of your clan's banner though.  That would help with what Huseby is talking about.

Ah ok,  I did not know that.  Definitely does help.

I haven't seen it in practice, so I didn't know that.  It does kind of defeat the purpose if your faction banner still shows up when you go to play.

But if you know that, it's easy enough to choose another banner before you join the battle as an anonymous person.

It also announces you if you have purple text. But again, you can turn that off. It's just a pain in the ass to do if you are doing it a lot.

I honestly don't see why people haven't signed up as farmer_nate or Spookisland yet......... they were both heroes of cRPG by making any server they are in that much more enjoyable (maybe not for the greatest reasons.... but still).

I tried to sign up with the pseudonym SpookIsland and it gave me a message saying "pseduonym not available"

clearly spook lives

You can also simply go to edit character, and then select a standard native banner instead of clicking "use clan's banner." Sure having to turn off your title announcement and changing your banner can be tedious, but for all the true nerds that want 100% anonymity, it works.
