Sure if you're talking about the action RPG that came out on the original Xbox.  Otherwise controlling a party in RPG games is a pain in the ass.

if that's the case, Ultima Online was the best RPG ever (yes it was an MMO RPG).  This was before about the year 2001 though, after pub 16 it went to shit (it was getting bad up til that point too).

After that, probably Witcher 2, Skyrim..

Dark souls is fun but too few rpg features to count it as a real rpg imo.

Enjoyed Morrowind most of Elder Scrolls games, though it was the first I played. The games before that were nice too, just played them afterwards. Oblivion was fine too but some pretty nice mess, Skyrim is a bit weird but enjoyable too. Waiting for Elder Scrolls Online for sure. Hope they won't fuck it up!

Of the ones on this list, Dark Souls & Witcher 2.

I haven't actually played the KOTOR games so I can't really say much about those, the Elder Scrolls games seem kinda boring to me (they start decent but get dull quickly), fallout is fun but similar to skyrim in that I can't get through the entire story without getting bored of the repetitive gameplay.

 I have both of the Mass Effect games as well as the most recent Deus Ex game but have yet to play any of them.

Borderlands should probs be on this list too

Darn, I saw the skyrim option and I was like: Why no oblivion or morrowing in there?! (I didn't care for the other options) So i tagged Skyrim, then realising the other TES games were higher up in the poll xD

But to be honest, I would have selected all TES's if I could.

Clearly the poll should be for "Western RPGs" as JRPGs aren't included(Aside from DS). Also, as Karasu mentioned, why isn't Planescape: Torment up there? P:T's dialogue alone should be enough to warrant a spot on that list.

Well, I can't really deny that it's an RPG, but it's the bare minimum of what I'd consider an RPG, which is why I generally ignore them in these questions. About as much of an RPG as Borderlands. Your actions impact little how the story unfolds leading to few opportunities to actually roleplay. Each sequel focuses more and more on the levelling and looting aspects which are somehow considered to be roleplaying. Which they indeed can be a part of, but not necessarily so. Dialogue exists only to give you the next mission where you're supposed to go an kill people or other random creatures.

Everything is solved by killing, there is no opportunity to pickpocket, lockpick, very little stealth in general. Diplomatic skills like intimidation, persuasion and such are also lacking. Path of Exile is the same. The emphasis on story, for example in Path of Exile is only slightly higher than the story in World of Warcraft. Not sure how it gets later, but I've gotten to level 25 in that game, and I found myself killing stuff constantly for random reasons I stopped caring about around level 17, because the excuses were pretty thinly disguised. Very similar to what happened in WoW.

It's the Action RPG genre in a nutshell. With a heavy emphasis on the action part. Still, they're generally accepted to be RPG's, hence the name, so I can't really be bothered to argue the point that they're not. However, what I'd consider to be the best RPG's are RPG's that allow for RPing something else than a killing machine while keeping the killing machine part fun.

For me, a game is an RPG when you can actually play different roles, and the story adapts based on the role you play. This isn't the case in e.g. Diablo or Bioshock, why I don't consider them to be RPGs.

Sometimes you can really easily roleplay something in games that are not supposed to be RPGs. For example in strategy games I tend to play in a way that fits history or following a theme (like super catholic and HRE centric Austria in europa universalis)

Diablo is not a hack and slash, is just doesnt have auto attack. Add aa to diablo and it is as much rpg as other any other.

Edit: besides, Gothic series can also be considered hack and slash (In G3 this is actually all you do) yet the generar consensus is that it is an RPG.

The legacy of JRPGs on the genre forever binded it with character customization/leveling/stats, simple as that. Some of you guys have really high standards. While some people would barely call Diablo 2 an RPG, I would barely call Mass Effect 2 one.

From what I hear, Planescape: Torment is the most well regarded WRPG.

This thread made me want to look into older games. I'm thinking of buying Baldurs Gate II: Enchanced edition. I also saw Baldur's Gate I: Enhanced edition too. Do you recommend both, or only the second game?

Speaking of JRPGs: Dragon Warrior (for NES) was way better than the Final Fantasy games.  Controlling 1 character is better than controlling a party.  I remember my game coming with this sweet map too:

I would jump straight to the second game personally. The first is more dated and linear IIRC and don't think the story was as good

If you want more focus on story and dialogue then get Planescape: Torment. BG2 is more action and fighting but still has a decent story and options for what to do

BG: Dark Alliance and BG: Dark Alliance 2 (for xbox) was way better than the old school BG games for PC.

Planescape: Torment. On my first playthrough now (with high res patch), the writing is incredible.

Please put in Fable: lost chapters.
Although then I will have more options; it's down to Mass Effect 1, KOTOR 1 and Fable, Witcher 2 is probably next.
