Title: Realism version: why not?
Post by: Baskakov_Dima on December 22, 2013, 09:57:23 pm
We see many people in that game, who want it to be more realistic - just check Realism Discussion area. But due to some issues balance is not based on realism - it would be hard to maintain it due to some real features being hard to include - like years and years of practice to master the bow and consequent lack of good archers.

But is still looks possible to make a version of cRPG, that will have realistic balance.

How?
Let it be another module for those, who want realism. Let everything be just realistic there at first, and only at second balanced. Balance will be based on Realism Discussion forum area.

What do we need?
Just to change some numbers and ticks and build another button in cRPG launcher. We barely need something completely new.

What will we get?
A good game. Just a good game.

How to deal with gold and characters?
Realism version will use other characters and have another Strategus. I think, it is the only unique thing we need.

That will stop any realism discussions connecting normal cRPG.

Too much work for too little gain, I think. That's why it will never happen.

I like the idea - actually a LOT.

This medieval Battlefield 2 hopping game with 13 yr old agi girls wielding heavy polearms without fatigue and faster than the eye can follow... is sometimes fun, but also kinda tiring.

But like Macropus said: not much of a chance.

Mod is on its decline, dev ressources going into the new game, Bannerlord coming up, player base is already going down... so I do not see any sub-mod coming...

Maybe one of the mods for the new games (Bannerlord or M:BG) will take up the idea. But I doubt it, real combat sims always attract only a very limited number of players, most are in just for the lulz (nothing bad with that - me too ;-) )

People will still play it, even when Bannerlord will be released.

Actually, Native was much more realistic, than cRPG.But Native lacks some further development, that is done here.

Plate armor is more capable of bouncing cutting hits, it is much easier there to couchlance people, weight does not affect skills so much, you can't knockdown a full-plated guy by hitting him with a stick, you can't penetrate fullplate with hunting crossbow from big distances, bows are not more accurate than crossbows, amount of ammo is bigger, you normally die if headshot... Should I continue, or is it enough?

Realism version, eh?

Since none of the horses have stirrups, as soon as a lancer couches someone they'll launch off their horse and break their neck. Good times.

Piercing arrow going through plate.
Piercing arrow to the head.-> Dead
Piercing arrow to the chest. -> Dead
Piercing arrow to the leg. -> Unable to move.
Piercing arrow to the arm. -> Unable to block.

Twohanded hits -> slower.
Twohanded hits against onehanded block -> going through.

How long this could be fun?

Agreed. Almost every mechanics change from Native is shit. crpg team has good coders but abysmal sense of design or fun.

Arrows rarely could penetrate plate unless point blank.
2h, Maulers, Pole arms could not lift arms after 3 minutes of insane spamming.

It all sounds like fun to me.

We would all be using spears and other crap weapons, with crap armor.

There is already a realism dedicated mod for fans of the Viking invasions called VĂkingr. It features factions from the typical Anglo-Saxons and Vikings to the Gaels and the Normans.

The appeal of cRPG is that it is not realistic, and while I love historicity and realism, I don't think this mod needs to be split up over it. That's not to say this game should not take features from history or realism (spears rearing horses, knockdown, balanced vs. unbalanced weapons), but they should not define the game.
