Title: Post some art you really like
Post by: Utrakil on December 08, 2013, 01:44:14 pm
I would like to create a thread with all kinds of nice sculptures, craffiti, stencils and whatever art you can find in puplic places.
I start.

Wait, you like the spider but not Bilbao's Gugenheim itself ? I prefer the architecture :D

The Guggenheim is beautifull. But in general sculptures are more appealing to me than architecture.
But go ahead and post a pic af the building.

Architectur art best art.
People who made those buildings are gods in my eyes. To name some: Norman Foster, Zaha Hadid.

My favorite architectural style is brutalism. When I have long and detailed dreams, these are the kind of buildings I see in them:

(click to show/hide)

Art in general I have way too many likes to ever post them all, but lets start with Zdzislaw Beksinski:

spoilers for big:
(click to show/hide)

Wayne Barlowe's version of Hell is basically how I always imagined it:

(click to show/hide)

And to round things out, images from the Codex Seraphinianus by Luigi Serafini. It is an entire encyclopedia hundreds of pages long and written in an imaginary script that describes a surreal alternate reality:

spoilers for nudity (not work safe!)
(click to show/hide)

I managed to borrow the Codex through the interlibrary loan system, it came from a library from another state's university. Would love to own a copy, but it is out of print and costs hundreds of dollars. I think it may have been inspired by the Voynich manuscript (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Voynich_manuscript), an alchemical (?) codex from the 1400s that has pictures of plants the do not and never have existed, detailed in a language seen nowhere else in history and never translated. I'm sure its fiction, but the fact that its presented in an encyclopedic format like "yup here is some things that exist" sends a chill up my spine the same way a good horror story does.

Pretty sure it was the inspiration for the character name "beached_dolphin". #historylesson

Here, a church(that's what it looks like to me, define it yourself) built on stilts, on a mysterious island.

See the uniformity of the Parthenon, the ellipsoidal perfection of the Pantheon? The stentorian nature of the Gothic Cathedral, the masculine fearlessness of the Alten Reichstag before all the world? The solemn of the Bavarian homestead, or how stands Neuschwanstein castle in its inextinguishable glory, standing proud amid the cold and black, yearning towards the very heavens themselves, high above the world? See the simple beauty of the southern German villages in Winter, and the joyful innocence of the Munich Christmas markets? See the Stockholm streets illumined, harkening back, beckoning you back to the eras of past kings and fading splendor? Do you yet see the Sun rising over the fiery majesty of the Brandenburg gates?

I know I do.

What about the Sedlec Ossuary?  This is a seriously creative way to get corpses out of the way and kind of morbidly appealing.

The internet is a public place right?  :P

I enjoy browsing around this site from the Rijksmuseum of the Netherlands. You can download works from the Masters and save it as your desktop, or use it to create your own "works of Art" using RijksStudio.

Mother of perspective, I started blinking because I thought my vision went crazy.

Rightfully so, it's called "Bombardment of the Optic Nerve" by Miroslav Šutej, it was created to make that effect and it's even greater in person, I was lucky this painting came to Croatia (since the 70's it's in the MoMA in NY) and had the fortune to experience it first hand, really impressive.

btw guys I found this one website a few months ago that's completely amazing for finding art.  it's probably the best free art database on the internet, in fact, wikipaintings sources many of their images from it.  it's easy to spend a few hours going through it.  enjoy!
