Title: Half-Sword
Post by: Sparvico on November 29, 2013, 11:18:19 pm
Just a few questions for any more experienced half-sworders out there as I am almost certainly going it next gen.

In general do half-sworders feel that the bastard sword series or great sword series is better for half-swording? (and i would always be half-swording, no dedicated 2 hand wpf at all).
Do half-sworders find agi or str builds to be more satisfying?
Is half-swording viable in strat?

Anyone with any other advice is also certainly welcome.

Bastards are too short with polearm animations

You can try the estoc, it's currently bugged to have all normal 2h animations in half-sword mode which gets kind of funny with mw 34p stabs.

halfswording--> thrust based play

It is like a weaker, shorter awlpike with 4 attack directions.

Weaker? 37 cut slash with Danish?

Well what is the best great sword for halfswording then?

Dunno, I don't know what's the thrust dmg. Last patch buffed swing dmg in polearm mode, so maybe these swords are finally effective?
Danish might be best for halfswording because of it's range, decent speed and thrust dmg(I suppose it has better dmg than Highland Claymore and Flambard)
I don't want to make a STF tests, waste of money and time :P

I enjoyed half-swording a lot with a danish, I often miss it. Even though not supported very well by the in-game animations, the greatswords the model are based on were designed for it.

These are screenshots of the half-sword stats of GGS, claymore and 2h sword (so you get the picture):

Should probably go with the German greatsword. It is the only stabbing-centric greatsword, and stabbing is kind of the point of halfswording.

I must say, the longsword is also quite viable for halfswording. Yes it is short, but its speed on the stab is unparalleled. Not to mention it fills a unique niche for very short stabby polearms. The only other polearm in this space is the shortened spear, and there is something inherently more fun about halfswording.

I used to carry a 1h for small spaces in siege (gatehouses, etc)...and now that the halfsword on 2h has become viable I use that instead - it's nice :)

Longsword does have a nice halfsword mode as Jona mentions, but as a primary weapon might wanna try something longer - personal preference.
I think Jona gets around this by having like 8 athletics and light armor and moving around like a loony toons character :)

I've been using a MW bastard sword to pretty good effect. The speed is amazing. The lack of range is a little troublesome at times though. I really enjoyed the MW Sword of War's range (was using one till I traded for the Bastard Sword) but it was way to slow in many situations. I'm thinking maybe the Two Handed Sword would be a good balance of range and speed, might try and get my hands on one of those.

They call me Roadrunner.

Half-swording on the really short 2H like bastard sword can be annoying, your thrusts are much shorter reach than you think until you get used to it. The greatsword 2H are nice, but a bit expensive for this. I used a danish out of the armory and had fun with the stabs.

In strat battles, you'd be better off with an actual polearm. The shorter reach and lack of a shield make it ineffective during clustered fights.

It's more of a shank, really. I always treated it as more of a rondel-type playstyle... with all 4 attack directions (well, used to be 3) at once and with the ability to block. For some reason polearm stabs seem quicker the shorter your weapon is... so with the super short longsword stab, it is quite speedy, and quite effective. I can often times hit twice if I get a first hit in. Not to mention if you play it like a support class... never attack anyone directly, flank them whilst they are attacking your allies... they can't even turn around to block you in time for the 2nd hit, and 2 hits is normally all it takes with speed bonus on your side (which you should have, assuming you know how to play this game :P)

Bastard type weapons are not meant to be used like the other greatswords. The point of their polearm mode is the polearm with a shield mode.
