Title: Leave of Absence
Post by: Sir_Firebus on November 26, 2013, 01:09:45 am
There is something wrong with my computer, monitor, or graphics card. The colors bug out and any game I play freezes. So, I will have to get a new computer or have this one looked at. I was just getting good to and on my way to lvl 36 :( I might be gone 2 months, less, or never come back, but it's been fun while it has lasted. Take care my friends.

I don't really have a time estimate at all, because I might just get a new computer, have people look at it, or it might fix it self 1 random day lol

I'd bet my left nut the video card is toast. Probably due to the fan dying and causing it to overheat.

I have an old 9500gt laying around that you can have.  :o

Definitely your card man, same thing happened to me where any games i opened or played would end up freezing, it started with high demand games but eventually happened to about 90% of the games i played. So it sounds like your card is fried

You can probably find some cheap parts to replace right now up until Black Friday if you're fine with opening up your computer. If you recently updated your graphics driver, you can also roll back to see if it was an update error or something.

An older card of mine died this way and overheated, and it made yellow lines all over the monitor, It was fried video ram.

Perhaps this is another part of the GPU that's dying? You might want to try replacing your card with someone else's just to try.

Definitely the GPU. If you still got a warranty for it, you might get it replaced.

yep, had the same thing a few years ago, had purple dots all over the screen, then some blue lines and eventually my graphics card gave up for good

your screen is fine, so is everything else, just make sure to not use that graphics card if you can avoid it (if youre unlucky it might take your board with it (Happened to me, had to get new gfx card, motheboard and cpu because i kept using that gfx card til it died))

hope youll get it fixed soon mate

I have windows xp, and the computer was delievered 12/29/06. It cost S3,105.51. It is a custom made alienware that was a monster at its time please don't say ohhhhh what a fucking rip off. I've heard that enough and don't believe it.

I'm not sure why you linked a vid showing how to repair a monitor, when you should be taking out the gfx card to replace it.
Think about it. If your monitor is busted, it will display the messed up colours all the time. Even when you're staring at your desktop wallpaper.
If it happens ONLY during gaming (and maybe some video playback), it's 99% of the time the gfx card.

Take it out, clean the dust from cooler, remove cooler, remove the thermal paste, apply new thermal past, attach cooler again, install and see it it's better. Make sure you don't fry it from static electricity build up.

If it is still messed up, see if you can get a spare one somewhere, install it and your troubles should be gone.

Actually VGA issues can do the exact same, that's why checking with another card works too, monitor is usually lower risk than that.

My 8800 GTS years ago got the yellow lines in desktop, booting, bios etc. everywhere, but it wasn't my Monitor. I still use it  :)

I think you misunderstood - GPU is not your monitor. It is the graphics card attached to your motherboard.

But they're right. I made myself a PC at around that time for a total price of ~$1200 and, excepting a new GPU (since the old one fried, just like yours probably did), it was a beast back then and still more than decent today. Alienware prices are bloated.

ohh what a fucking rip off.

You should look into it, alienware overprices their stuff. You pay for name mostly, and not the quality

I believe I've had this before. Have you tried fucking with the anti-aliasing? Usually does the trick.
