Title: Estoc damage type
Post by: Penitent on November 19, 2013, 05:48:27 am
Estoc should be blunt damage.  Estocs are blunt weapons IRL.  I don't care if you demote this to realism...it's absurd that the estoc does cut damage and it's offending my nerd sensibilities.

The French estoc or English "tuck" was a type of European sword in use from the 14th to 17th centuries. Characterized as having a cruciform hilt with a grip for two handed use and a straight, edgeless but sharply pointed blade of around 0.91 metres to 1.32 metres long.

I say we should make it 20 or 21 blunt instead of 28 cut.
(no knockdown of course)

What's absurd is that the unedged weapon has a secondary mode with 20 pierce (stab) and 40 cut (swing)...

It's true it's secondary mode is kind of insane. I agree 100% with what Garison is proposing, other wise this will just become the new annoying longsword.

I to agree that having the estoc do cut damage is ridiculous.

That said, a lol stab weapon with blunt damage is a horrifying prospect (I mean even tydeus has said the godendag is op) so the blunt damage should be low enough that the estoc becomes a weapon primarily used for stabbing (which is what it was). I mean the only thing that could make the longsword more annoying is if armor did nothing to mitigate it's swing damage. So if you make the estoc higher than like 25 blunt damage your basically that one guy from Germany in the 30s and 40s that we murricans got into a bit of a tussle with.

In any event 40 cut on an edge-less weapon of any type is just borked as fuck.

Yes, estoc needs balancing, swing damage should be tweaked (I don't care if it's cut or blunt as long as values are sensible), I just wanted to say it should be possible to use this weapon on a horseback.

"Estoc" refers to a fairly large spectrum of thrust oriented swords.  Some "estocs" are superficially virtually indistinguishable from "longswords" (which is a generic, nonspecific term that an "estoc" might be referred to as anyways), while some had a clear diamond cross-section and lacked any edge at all, with many variations in between.  Obviously the Estoc we have in crpg is one that retains a cutting edge.

2ndary mode was messed up, Tydeus said so in another thread.  it is using what was supposed to be the Flambard stats.  It's 2ndary mode will be greatly nerfed from it's current stats.  Too lazy to find his post.

I think it should be 18b. I like to balance piercing 4D weapons with warspear, so it'd be like that with a little less for side-swings but a little more for the stab. 20b is also still comparable to 28cut. From what I know, the stab at +3 is 32p. I think the weapon can also live with reducing its stab to 29p to parallel the damage to the long espada, but it's not really needed imo since +3 is only +2 pierce.
