As far as I can tell, the primary job of a lancer is to be the guy giving tips to others.

yes .. there are some, a bunch of hint's, guide's & build's spread over the forum (fun-builds, cav-guide & so on.)

as for myself ...i play with an' alt as a pure jousting lancer with 9 str / 27 agi / 172 wpf pole / 8 wm / 9 ride / 9 shield / 3 ps & ride with rupert my courser in fast, wide angles & circles, use my roundview-cam a lot (holding right-mouse) to dodge ("a" & "d" & speedcontrol "w" & "s") incoming cav's , arrow's , rocks , walls ...& finally pick up a target/opportunity for a hopefully successful hit.

maybe 12/24 - 15/21  ...4-5 ps ...6-7 ride , heavy/great-lance , destrier, courser, arabian, some like speed , some like manoeuver, some durability - it's up to you. i'm not the experienced lancer-cav player.

probably one of the Great Khan (GK) dude's can give you advice, or other experienced lancer's.

edith: ah well .. Johammeth has enlightened me ... who told 'bout [C]avalry! ?

anyway.. maybe it help's you.

My somewhat unusual playstyle on my cav consists of using heavy armour, a heavy horse and a lance or light lance with a minimal riding build. I have 24/15 and going for 27/15 at level 32. Riding is overrated, this build kills infantry like a beast. I don't ride around full speed hit and running unsuspecting people, I ride around melee fights actively bumping, stabbing and distracting people to make my team win the melee. I play it like it's some sort of armoured infantry support and it works pretty well. I just have a playstyle that fits with this build, but you should definitely give it a try on a skip the fun.

Also, learn to stab over the left side of your horse, people get caught of guard by that a lot.

my word of advice is when your about to stab some 1 you don't have to ride at full speed all the time, the amount of times I see people riding at full speed and then missing because the guy moves slightly and they hit or bump a team mate instead. You still do as much damage going slower and your a lot more likely to hit. Also people tend to swing at you before you get to them when your riding slower, so its also safer. Just my observations so far

Well pure lancer is one of my fav alt character builds and really is fun

I used to go with 18 18 build on a courser and never regret it

I prefer the "Jousting lance" with this build cuz the enemy will die anyway and it is faster and easier to land when compared with the Great Lance (also cheap)

As horse if you cant afford some elephant like badass horses just go with a courser its op

You can pick whatever you want as a side arm due to my 18 18 build i was using a HBS so i was effective with the sword aswell

Shield? Hell no. It may help you in some situations but if you take a shield you will have to sacrifice a slot and be forced to use a 1her and with this build 1h weapons will hit like toothpicks.

Also if you can afford go for heavy armours but its not a mandatory

glad to help

Quarter staff is fine + , if you use it you will have a spare slot for the shield

I personally would not suggest going "pure" lancer cavalry (aka no athletics, or no IF, maxing out riding and PS).  But if you do go that route, keep in mind that your WPF does affect your couching damage (as well as power strike).

I would suggest these builds as polearm only lancer (no shield).

Either go 24/15, 21/18, or 18/21 depending on what horse you want to ride.

I'd suggest 24/15 riding a destrier or war horse (if you can afford it and use a regular lance).  I wouldn't use a couch only lance without a shield (I'd only use a great lance, jousting and practice lance are obviously not as good, so why use em).

One thing is sure for cavalry, and even more for lancers; riding skill is golden.

really depends on your style.  personally,  i love it ^^  but i usually wouldnt go above minimal need of horse you wanna ride.

The biggest tip for lancers is don't be a lancer until something gets buffed.

The problem with heavy cav with lance/light lance is that even if you are the best rider in the world you don't have enough horse speed and agility to avoid damage. It means you have to be decent on foot too. Of course that's not a huge problem if you go shieldless, it allows you to use 2 slot polarms which are among the best weapons in the game in situations where you are stranded and you only have a half dozen skill points less than a pure infantry build. Just don't expect playing pure cavalry.

...that's why i'm a jousting lancer.

@kafein: ride or die.

high riding + champion arabian + mw heavy lance ftw (nice retro build :) )
few tips, how I play:
- watch your surroundings all the time,
- use couching lance by drifting sideway (not by going straight forward), so you cover a huge area + surprising for enemy
- use the break on your horse  a lot, keep changing your speed
- do quick slalom when you approach an archer head-on, he won't be able to hit you if you do it right
- join gk
