Title: Dishonored and DLCs (XXX Logen reveals all)
Post by: Xant on October 23, 2013, 12:42:49 pm
Anyone played Knife of Dunwall/the Witches DLC? Just started KoD and damn, it's really good. I forgot how great Dishonored was. Reminds me of the good games of early 2000s.

I recently pirated Dishonored because I heard great things about it and the game really is fun. Love the whole stealthy approach to it. Also are you guys playing non-lethal or lethal? For me it's lethal because it's fun stabbing peoples necks.

Lethal, because I also love the swordfighting in the game. Not the most challenging, but really fun (which is why I don't do it too much, mostly stealthing but sometimes fighting). Smooth animations, including the finishers. Don't break the rhytm of the combat at all.
Looks like they improved graphics in the Daud DLCs, and also added a few cool animations. Really loving it so far.

I lost my Dishonored save, are the DLC like a standalone story or do I have to finish the story again or something to do em?
Title: Re: Dishonored and DLCs
Post by: Xant on October 23, 2013, 01:30:45 pm
The DLCs are standalone. You play as Daud, and the storyline takes place parallel to the main story line. So yeah, standalone.

Ofcourse the game is awesome. In many ways it resembles Thief. And Thief was spectacular.

Are these dlc's better than the main game?
Title: Re: Dishonored and DLCs
Post by: Xant on October 23, 2013, 03:08:46 pm
So far? Yes, I think so. Especially because the main game's plot was so gay and predictable and you could do nothing but be the dog of the people you knew were going to fuck you over. And there are small improvements all around, like animations and graphics.

fuc u it was totaly unpredctable
actually I liked the explanation for why they did what they did. And the fact that they turned on each other afterwards.

That was good, yeah, but what sucked was that you were this mute retard who walked straight into it without any suspicions or... Anything.
Also, only played the first mission of the dlc so far but it had a lot more ways to complete it than the main missions.
Title: Re: Dishonored and DLCs
Post by: Logen on October 23, 2013, 03:36:52 pm
But it was totally unpredictable for the master assasin, former elite bodyguard Corvo
That stupid tendency to make player character a silent retard always pissed me off
Title: Re: Dishonored and DLCs
Post by: Xant on October 23, 2013, 03:51:11 pm
Oh yeah, the guy you play in dlcs speaks, so that's another improvement
Title: Re: Dishonored and DLCs
Post by: Christo on October 23, 2013, 03:55:14 pm
Do they make this "silent retard" choice so that they don't have to personalize the player character that much, much less of a hassle?
I'd say having selectable dialog options work better, and you don't even need a voice actor for the player character to not break "immersion" that the hero represents the player
(yes i am aware that there are dialog options in Dishonored, but you don't really question anything, it's like, kill this person because reasons, do this because reasons. )

Xant, you might wanna add a SPOILER ALERT to the topic title :3
I haven't finished the main story completely yet and skipped reading the thread pretty early. Just saying...

I loved the gameplay and setting of Dishonored, but the writing was pretty cringeworthy throughout the entire game. Is this improved at all in the DLCs?

Well I was trying to be somewhat vague, but Logen ruined it ALL. The turn of events really is very predictable though. Bad writing, like Vodner says. Writing's been better in the DLCs so far, but haven't gotten the chance to play too much yet.

I had this weird feeling playing Dishonored that all the achievements and optional stuff was so important to do it detracted me from playing the way I wanted. I also don't seem to react too well when there are many ways to solve a problem and choosing one of them is arbitrary before you commit to that choice.

Really enjoyed the game without dlc's played it all the way trough without killing or alerting anyone, dlc's I'll probably go on a rampage, just looking for good deals on steam/gmg/amazon, don't inted to pay 20 euros for dlc.

Never played this game, I'm going to have to give it a playthrough. Would you suggest I play it first without DLCs?
Title: Re: Dishonored and DLCs
Post by: Xant on October 23, 2013, 07:44:31 pm
Better to play the main story line first, yes, because the DLCs run parallel to it. So you'll get all the references to your actions.

Yes, sorry Benkei. I was trying to be as vague as Xant was, but just could not handle it.
Ok, I pirated it and surprisingly enough Xant was actually right, dlc is somewhat better

Indeed. I believe so.
I forgot how nice and fluid moving around and climbing feels in this game. One of the most enjoyable aspects for me.

Depends on your playstyle. Took me about five hours I think, some review said it took them six hours.

Brigmore Witches is better than Knife of Dunwall, so far.

Post by: Prpavi on October 24, 2013, 03:39:17 pm
ok so about extra 10 hours of game with these 2 DLC's not bad. I'm guessing you're not going to play trials or whatever it's called, not a real story DLC if I understood well.

Finished Brigmore Witches. Great DLCs. Way better writing than the main game.

KoD was with high chaos, but got the overall chaos to low by the end of Witches.

I was surprised I ended up with low chaos, because I killed a lot of people. I even came back and blew up them evil fishes! Maybe the choices you make is what matters in the end.

Did you finish Brigmore Witches too or just KoD? The last level in Brigmore Witches looks pretty amazing, graphics-wise.
Title: Re: Dishonored and DLCs (XXX Logen reveals all)
Post by: Logen on October 25, 2013, 12:10:07 am
Brigmore Witches. I actually feel that level design was better in KoD, more verticality and places to explore.
But overall, these were exemplary DLCs.
Title: Re: Dishonored and DLCs (XXX Logen reveals all)
Post by: Xant on October 25, 2013, 12:15:56 am
It felt more like an expansion pack. Together they were almost as long as the main game, added animations and new powers and bone charms, etc.
And I dunno, they completely re-used a level from the main game in the third mission of KoD, which sort of brings down the level design part of KoD as a whole. The second mission of Brigmore was pretty open too. But dunno, I thought all of the levels were pretty good.
Title: Re: Dishonored and DLCs (XXX Logen reveals all)
Post by: Logen on October 25, 2013, 12:25:37 am
True, but still the 2nd leven in KoD was the most enjoyable for me.
I wonder what Arkane is up to now. They have what, 3 games on their list? Atleast I played only Arx Fatalis, Dark Messiah and this one, and all three of them are outstanding. Too bad they're under bethesda and zenimax now.
Title: Re: Dishonored and DLCs (XXX Logen reveals all)
Post by: Xant on October 25, 2013, 12:35:30 am
Dark Messiah was awesome, most fun combat ever in a RPG. All the fucking around with physics and spells and melee was great. And the graphics and boss fights were pretty damn impressive for the time too.
And I don't know if them being under Zenimax is bad, Dishonored was released two years after the acquisition and obviously it didn't stop them from making a great game. Hopefully they'll announce their next project soon.
It should be very interesting, especially since they've proven themselves now and should be able to dedicate all their time to the next project. Dishonored can't have had their full attention, because of their two cancelled projects before it.

Yeah, I just hope they dont get "corrupted" by the industry in its current state and continue to do their own thing, try out new ideas like they did in all of their games.
Meh, nothing to play now. Tried DXHR Director's Cut but just could not force myself to play it since I already know the story. And for some reason AI seems to be pretty stupid and suicidal. They have no sense of self-preservation whatsoever. But all these steath games have the same approach to AI and difficulty I guess, AI never sounds the alarm when they find a body, no, they have to go touch it first. Only to be killed on the same spot, ofcourse. Did not notice that in my first playthrough. I guess its back to books again...

im not supporting mute characters or anything, but i think the explanation for Corvos case is obvious....
1. he is a bodyguard...nothing more, nothing less, people have even called him a dog and such, in-game, his one goal in life was to simply serve the empress as her.....well, guard dog.......
2. the game was all about revenge, (its tagline was "revenge solves everything") imagine your corvo, the one thing you care for in life, the empress and her daughter, has just been taken from you. corvo is so blinded by revenge that he isnt thinking straight, and he is willing to serve anyone and do anything to get his revenge, even if it means blindly doing some guys bidding without question
with that said, id like to say that high chaos is the only way to go. a game advertised as being a "uber deadly assassin on a bloody revenge", it really doesnt make sense to go the "happy-go-lucky" low chaos route (AKA bitch route).....

Thought about playing Deus Ex HR too, but meh. The gameplay just isn't anywhere near as fun as Dishonored's, so can't replay it after I know the story.

The Royal Protector is far more than "just a bodyguard." At the beginning of the game he was even returning from a mission in a far away land that he was sent to.
The game can be all about revenge, but that doesn't mean Corvo had to be so retarded. Obviously he isn't completely blinded by revenge, he still cares for Emily. If he only cared for revenge, the game would have ended after he attacked Daud's base...
If the game took place over two hours after the Empress died, then the revenge excuse would have worked. But it starts six months later and takes place over several days/weeks/months.
On an unrelated note
One of the best game trailers ever. It's well made and, here's the kicker, it's actually an extremely accurate portrayal of the gameplay. Most cinematic trailers have nothing to do with the gameplay of the game.

I loved dishonored, one of my favorite single player games, the gameplay was amazing and I really liked the graphic style.
The only thing I disliked about it though was the ending (in both the main game and the DLC), not because of what happened in the plot but just because it felt dull.
Finishing both the game and tKoD feels completely... dull. In most games you get that feeling of accomplishment or satisfaction when you beat it, but in this game the ending didn't feel significant, there was no difficulty at all at the end, no hard boss battle or anything, its just like "oh.. is it over?" with absolutely no excitement. I thought the knife of dunwall was worse than the original in that regard, but I liked everything else about it.
Also, I love this song from the game, it's sick.

What I dislike most is that there is no New Game + option. It's a very stupid design decision that when you go to "missions" you start with the runes and bone charms you had at the time.
Huh. Just did the sprint+stealth slide thing and cut a dude's both legs off with an attack. Didn't know there was a situational damage system for blades too.
