Title: Hear me out!
Post by: Joseph Porta on October 14, 2013, 10:45:22 pm
Allright, so warhammers are like a no-go, just fantasy shit and shouldn't be in c-rpg, right? Well I think differently, you have the long maul, right? I just can't imagine that not one burly dude comes up with the plan to shorten the shaft hzz and use it in brutal close combat, I just can't imagine.. Surely there were some if the long maul existed.

I assume you basically mean the crush-through weapons, yes?
If so, they are assumed fantasy weapons, because in real world they would be highly ineffective in combat:

-They are very heavy, and real human would get very tired very fast swinging such weapon.
-Because of their weight you wouldn't be able to parry with them effectively.
-The crush-through effect wouldn't work against shields.

I'm sure some poor fighters, who couldn't afford proper weapons used tools like a sledgehammer in combat, purely because they are effective against armour, but they were most likely much smaller and lighter that what we have in c-rpg.

A proper medieval twohanded warhammer in c-rpg hides under the name of Bec de Corbin (secondary mode) :)

Blunt weapons like maces and hammers  were actually more common than swords

I can't remember mentioning crushthrough though

Allright lt me explain with an epic bundle of pics

Looking like it could be thrown together from basic components

It would be approx the length of a:

With a bit down sized hammerhead of a:

And not some freaky hammerhead like:
(However cool they admittedly are)

No idea on stats tbh just a lil guideline
With more speed then a long maul, say 83 or something still slow!
Less damage, no idea what would be appropriate and possibly no crushthrough.

Snip
Sigmar!!

We already have the Maul and Great Maul but if you are requesting a more cosmetic and fleshed-out 2h warhammer version like this:

You have my support then.

Note: It is the Dwarven Warhammer from Elder Scrolls. I know that it has this overly fantasy aura around it but it is the only depiction of what I imagined in my mind. Couldn't really find a more realistic version on Google.

I have no clue what exactly you are getting at, but as far as historical accuracy goes, hammer like weapons did not feature huge hammer heads. Long Maul is complete bullshit, nobody would use that as a weapon. Hammers used with two hands wouldn't have much larger hammer heads than the one handed warhammers, otherwise they would become impossible to control while not adding much killing power. The Bec de Corbin is in fact a hammer, which is the way it was implemented in game before. They turned it into a pierce weapon at some point, but they have given back the blunt mode with the secondary mode. The Lucerne hammer also was a historical variety of a pole mounted hammer, which was longer and had a bigger spike on top. A weapon specifically built for fighting knights. Use the spike to kill horses and then whack on the knight's helmet with the hammer bit.

A weapon I'd like to see in cRPG is a two handed maul like this one.

You know how fast you would tire out using a weapon like a maul, especially one like the long maul! I doubt anyone was strong enough....or dumb enough to carry a weapon like that out to battle.

Not quite true. While hammers designed for war mostly feature small heads, there is ample evidence for the existence and use of sledgehammer-like mauls as an improvised weapon.

Teeth the lucerne hammer looks like our bec de corbin that we have in game (besides the fact it looks like the blunt side was the primary used side, which would make sense over risking getting the piercing side stuck in armor)

POLEARM GUYS! Not a 2h..  A polearm..

A weapon I'd like to see in cRPG is a two handed maul like this one.

That is exactly the kind what i'm trying to explain!

Just polearm, pole animations with hammers just look more impressive then 2h gaymations
