Title: Making Vietnam War era rock cd, help meh
Post by: Prpavi on September 27, 2013, 03:25:35 pm
I don't know much about this era of rock music so I need all you rock heads to give me a hand in making a nice cd or two compilation of Vietman era rock.

Was thinking allong the lines of Fortunate Son, Paint it Black, All Along the Watchtower type of songs.

Paste Youtube links if possible so we can all listen to the music and make a nice cd toghether

Cheers!

The anti-Vietnam War song par excellence. Co-written by Crosby, Stills & Nash and Jefferson Airplane, but I much prefer the latter's version.

You have to dedicate atleast an entire CD to CCR alone, if not more

Can't forget the Anti War songs as well. Anything from CCR, Skynyrd is a must.

Anything from Late 60's to early 70's is your goal.

Here are some... The first two by Anders Lewen aren't exactly from the era, but honestly their sounds fit in better than some of the stuff from the era and they are great tracks.
Other ones are classics you can't leave out from a Veitnam compilation.
Enjoy  :D

Edit: Forgot Janis Joplin!!! Can't forget Janis!!!! Haven't listened to Janis in sooo long.  8-)

Good suggestions from people here.  Rolling Stones, Creedence Clearwater Revival, Skynard...great suggestions.  Same with Jefferson Airplane, Neil Young, Steppenwolf

One of these from the Kinks I'd include (I like Lola better, but both would fit):

Might be a little more poppy than you're looking for:

one of my favorite songs of all time:
(click to show/hide)

This is a very stereotypical "Vietnam" us vs them song (I think most people would recognize it)

(might be a little past the vietnam era, 75/76'ish):

Ok I found the song list from my wedding's reception/cocktail hour, not all songs are from the Vietnam era (most are), all songs I really enjoy, but none of them are going to be very angsty or controversial (lots of great songs are not on the list because they didn't fit in at a wedding):  Highlighting songs that I like and are era accurate.  Some are just after Vietnam ended (but great songs, still fit in with the theme).  Italicized are songs that are late for the genre, but still would fit in I think

Aerosmith –sweet emotion,

Allman Brothers – Ramblin Man

America – Sister Golden Hair

Animals – House of the rising Sun

Bad Company – Can’t Get Enough, Feel Like Making Love

The Beatles – With a Little Help from my Friends

Blue Oyster Cult – Don’t Fear the Reaper, Burnin for you

Bob Seger – Night Moves

Boston – More Than a Feeling, Smokin

Buffalo Springfield – For What it’s Worth

Cream – Crossroads, Sunshine of your Love

Credence Clearwater Revival – Proud Mary, Susie Q, Green River, Lodi

Doobie Brothers – Black Water

The Doors – Break on Through, Peace Frog, Roadhouse Blues

The Eagles – Heartache Tonight, Take it easy, One of These Nights

Eric Clapton – Lay Down Sally

Fleetwood Mac – Dreams, Landslide

Free – All Right Now

Golden Earring – Radar Love

The Grateful Dead – Touch of Grey

Heart – Barracuda

Hollies - Long Cool Woman

Janis Joplin – Me and Bobby McGee

Joe Walsh – Funk #49, Rocky Mountain Way

Kansas – Carry on my wayward son

Lynyrd Skynyrd –  Gimme 3 Steps

Nena – 99 Luftballons

Orleans – Still the One

Pink Floyd – Wish You Were Here (one of the only PF songs I like :P)

Queen – Fat Bottom Girls

Ram Jam – Black Betty

Rob Stewart – Stay with me

Rolling Stones – Gimme Shelter, Beast of Burden

Stealers Wheel – Stuck in the Middle

Steve Miller Band – Rock N Me Baby, take the money and run

Stevie Nicks – Edge of Seventeen

Sugarloaf – Green Eyed Lady

Three Dog Night – Mama told me not to come, Joy to the world (three dog night is popular from the time, not a huge fan myself)

The Traveling Wilbury’s – End of the Line not even close to the 60's/70's, but written by Bob Dylan, Jeff Lynne, Tom Petty, George Harrison and Roy Orbison.  Certainly feels like the era you're going for.

The who - baba o’riley

Tom Petty – Runnin’ down a Dream, Breakdown

Van Morrison – Brown Eyed Girl, Moondance

ZZ Top – I’m bad, I’m nationwide

I'll keep adding to this list as I think of some classics (wish I could get my wedding cocktail/reception play list...spent about 3 months thinking of classic rock songs from this era...my minds shot right now though)

I think only Havelle and Huseby so far have mentioned The Doors, but you also must include them! There are some other Rolling Stones songs that come to mind as well when I think of the Vietnam War era

Vietnam War era is a pretty big category, from 55 to 75, there's no way to fit all that amazing music on one or two CDs visitors can't see pics , please register or login

But here's a few I didn't see mentioned yet:

Buffalo Springfield - For what it's worth!

(click to show/hide)

Vietnam War era song, though this one is actually about the hippie riots starting in 66.

Norman Greenbaum - Spirit in the Sky

(click to show/hide)

Steppenwolf - Born to be Wild

(click to show/hide)

James Gang - Funk #49
(click to show/hide)

This is soul/funk, but you always need this song on a Vietnam Era collection ;)

Edwin Starr - War

Don't know if it has to be made during Vietnam wars or it has to be Vietnam-war themed but if its the latter then I'd say this:

Well the whole idea is what would a solider in Vietman at that time listen to in the trenches while popping some LSD and watching the fireworks (Apocalypse now ^___^) so yes, a song from 1986 will not fit

If we are talking strictly Vietnam era this is too late, not that sure if early Led Zeppelin was that popular with the Murican soldiers anyway if we are talking about music popular with the soldiers in Vietnam

Like the thread, such a collection of pure gold tracks posted here.

Well 75 might be a bit late yes... The first track is from 71 tho. From their fourth album so Zep must have been quite big in the States at that time already. Considering the fact that they first became popular in USA, not in the UK like it would seem sensible.

I really need more of this kind of music, maybe not as old, but just the non commercial music. Somebody care to make another thread with rock/metal?
I believe son_of_odins admin thread is hard rock, but i should check it.

Guys seriously thank you for your awesome participation!

I've realised this is not as simple task as I imagined, way too much good music to just put into some "best of" so I decided to embark on a journey to listen to the albums of artists from that era, the favorite songs will then come naturally.

Currently listening CCR

So CCR are not actually "from the bayou" but San Francisco, damn was kinda disappoint  judging by the content I was sure they are from down south.

So was that a period where this kind of themes were popular in the american culture or they were just fond of the way of life and the culture so they gave hommage in songs?

Also the music path took me to Jethro Tull, listening to Aqualung now, love it  The whole album is a nice journey and on the last song I was completely sold with:

"I don't believe you:
You had the whole damn thing all wrong --
He's not the kind you have to wind up on Sundays.
Well you can excomunicate me on my way to Sunday school..."

All good suggestions, I was freaking out after the first page and didn't see the Buffalo Springfield song but it was eventually caught so I'll just leave this here.
