Title: Point'n'click games
Post by: Elmuri on September 26, 2013, 02:14:58 pm
As the title says, this is a topic for poin and click and click adventure games.

The golden age for these were 80's and 90's I guess, but I know there a still some made these days.

I've played some of the LucasArts classics (Monkey Islands etc.), tried the new Sherlock Holmes titles (didn't like much), and some of the Telltale games. And Botanicula, soon will play Machinarium.

So I'm asking you to give recommendations for new games, I nearly bought Deponia when it was on sale, but read it was quite bad.

Discuss.

Yup, heard of those, I just wonder why just a small part of the LucasArts games are on steam : (

Some random ones I liked:

The Lost Crown. Has its faults but also has a good atmosphere and story. This is maybe an acquired taste, the faults are quite glaring initially
Primordia. Sci-fi, post apoc setting. Has side quests/ extra puzzles you can do. Good story
Gemini Rue. Good cyberpunk story and setting
The Whispered World. This is a fairly decent nostalgic adventure but like other Deadelus adventures I tended to skip through the dialogue a lot. They did some other adventures worth a play through too
Dark Fall: Lost Souls.  First person horror adventure. Not bad atmosphere and story
The Testament of Sherlock Holmes . There are some other good SH games but this is maybe the most accessible (well I played through this more than the others)
The Walking Dead . Probably the best adventure I've played in a long while if you want a well told story with memorable characters. Pretty light on the gameplay side though
Dreamfall I liked this more than The Longest Journey but it is light on the gameplay
Broken Sword series Good stories, first 2 also have good adventure style gameplay. 3 and 4 are probably still worth a play through but they went 3d and put in box sliding puzzles

Look at TheAdventureGamers website for more, there will be loads more there

Play some King's Quest!

Quite old, but I think there are remakes, and lots of parts you can play. You might like it.

Beneath a steel Sky is also amazing.

Sadly I can't help with newer games.

Iunno, Syberia? Isn't that newer?

I think the most immersive I've ever played was "The Dig". I think it got bad reviews, not sure why; for me, it's one of the best ones. (Afaik Steven Spielberg intended it to be made into a movie, but the CGI would have been to expensive back then, so they made it into a game)

Pretty much all the Lucas Arts adventures (including The Dig) are worth a play through. The Dig has a decent story, but its short and the puzzles aren't the same sort of quality as in other Lucas Arts games. It got mixed reviews at release I think because it came after a long line of high quality Lucas Arts games, and this probably isn't as good as their best and it departed from the comedy formula which people might not have liked.

I'd recommend all the Lucas Arts adventures except maybe Maniac Mansion, Zak McKraken and Indiana Jones and The Last Crusade. Those 3 are quite a step below their best imo

but its short

Tell that 10 year old chadz who finished it as 11 year old chadz.

But yeah, it's actually one of the rare adventure games from that time that were serious and the humor was very dark and dry.

Apart from that - Indiana Jones 3 was shit, but 4 was pure gold - it's what the movie should have been.

I quite liked The Dark Eye - Chains of Satinav and black mirror series.

Beneath a steel Sky is also amazing.

Playing this now as it's freeware  8-) Been years since I've played an old school (or any really) adventure game.

You can play a handful of the LucasArts games recommended in this thread on Steam: http://store.steampowered.com/search/?developer=LucasArts (http://store.steampowered.com/search/?developer=LucasArts)

I too recommend practically every old LucasArts adventure game, including most of the old Sierra publishes (Police Quest, Kings Quest)

Get the LucasArts Adventure Pack (http://store.steampowered.com/sub/2102/) for  €8.99

Includes:
Indiana Jones® and the Fate of Atlantis™ (http://store.steampowered.com/app/6010/?snr=1_6_4__421)
Indiana Jones® and the Last Crusade™ (http://store.steampowered.com/app/32310/?snr=1_6_4__421)
LOOM™ (http://store.steampowered.com/app/32340/?snr=1_6_4__421)
The Dig® (http://store.steampowered.com/app/6040/?snr=1_6_4__421)

I recently completed The Last Crusade, could pretty much remember most of it from my childhood days.

The relaunched Special Editions of Monkey Island are great as well, practically my favorite two adventure games are MI1 and MI2, though Day of the Tentacle comes close by.

Monkey Island: Special Edition Bundle (http://store.steampowered.com/sub/6183/?snr=1_7_7_230_150_1) (Bundle, save €3.99)
The Secret of Monkey Island: Special Edition (http://store.steampowered.com/app/32360/)
Monkey Island™ 2 Special Edition: LeChuck’s Revenge™ (http://store.steampowered.com/app/32460/)

Amazing games that truly learnt you how to think outside the box when solving problems.

Regarding Sierra, there's a relaunched version of Leisure Suit Larry in the Land of the Lounge Lizards (http://store.steampowered.com/app/231910/?snr=1_7_15__13) available on Steam as well, made in the Unity engine.

I'd recommend all the Lucas Arts adventures except maybe Maniac Mansion, Zak McKraken

What? You evil bastard, don't destroy my childhood memories!

Day of the Tentacle
I had lots of fun playing this when I was a kid.

Maniac Mansion was a pretty special game, weird setting and story, but though very easy to solve (multiple endings) versus other point&click games of that era.

Zak McKraken however, definitely in my top 5 of adventure games, that game was and is still hilarious, excellent puzzles and problem solving, you can actually fail by using things wrong leaving you stuck, not easy to complete.

Maniac Mansion was my first point and click game and Edna scared the shit out of me! Also I never found out there was a save game feature even on my C64 and no Internet or anything to get clues, damn I was proud when I beat the game.

Zak McKraken was just awesome.

The Walking Dead by Telltale Games. Modern and most excellent. Best game of 2012.

i liked Edna & Harvey: The Breakout and Edna & Harvey: Harvey’s New Eyes a lot, but like other games of Daedalic (The Whispered World or Chains of Satinav) they can be quite depressing sometimes.

Now you're mentioning L'Amerzone it reminded me of:

Flight Of The Amazon Queen 1995

Great point&click game, not as epic as the Indiana Jones ones -- which it obviously is very inspired of -- but just as fun to play.

Interestingly enough the Amiga version had a superior sound and music side to it, whereas the PC version had the better graphics (plus voice acting).

Flight of the Amazon Queen is free on SCUMMVM website too. Dreamweb is also a pretty decent cyberpunk adventure on there. Very adult orientated adventure with a pretty dark premise. It even came with a little novel with some backstory. Not sure how well they stand up now though, like most of these they are probably pretty dated. Beneath a Steel Sky was also pretty good. All free on Scummvm website

Played both pink panther point & click games. That was closer to my birth than the present day.

The Quest for Glory games were amazing. Reasonably challenging puzzles, great story line and some unique RPG elements.

As for newer games available on Steam, Primordia was pretty good. Didn't mind Chains of Satinav either.

Check out AGS if you haven't already: http://www.adventuregamestudio.co.uk/. Plenty of indi developers making good games with this program. The Ben Jordan: Paranormal Investigator series is a good example.
