Title: Pole Shield (Hoplite) Questions.
Post by: BlackWhite on May 12, 2011, 09:33:58 am
Before this patch, the webpage gui had a stat for certain items "PENALTY WITH SHIELD" Is this still the case? I notice before patch I (seemed to) did more damage, now with awlpike (one of the weapons with the penalty with shield stat) it takes 3-4 hits with ps 6 to kill even light armor at times.  The next highest damage albeit with lower reach was the battle fork, and that did not have the "penalty with shield" stat but had 23 lower reach.   So my question is that, does a polearm do less damage with a shield?

Thanks for all your help!

I think the damage stays the same, but speed is reduced by 30% for "penalty with shield" weapons.

If it does not have the "penaly with shield" flag, it does the damage displayed in its stats. If it has that property then it does 25-35% (opinions on the exact number are divided) less damage and speed. In native, poles of less than 150 do not have the penalty, but the moder can choose to flag whatever they want.

On the website the stat has been taken out all together.  Seems to be replaced on all (but the awlpike strangely) by unsheathable.  So no more penalty?

this is wrong.

They removed the "penalty with shield"flag from all weapons because it doesn't do anything. Nothing.
All pole arms when used one handed [with a shield or on a horse] suffer a damage and speed penalty.
it is not a straight 30% dmg/speed decrease though, it is a bit lower and slightly different for all of them because of weapon speed variations, etc.
And yeah, Awlpike is the best hoplite weapon, then red tassle spear which is total baller :D
/bamboo spear is the super support hoplite with more reach, and beast anti cav -- although awlpike can do it just fine with proper footwork.

You just have to know when to put the shield on your back. You know, you -can- do that, right?

All poles when used with a shield one handed take about a 30% decrease in damage and speed. I believe walt or gafferjack have the threads proving it

I do not know about the flag but I remember from one of the (warband) beta versions that the changelog said something about spears of less than 150 reach not suffering a 1H penalty, at least to speed (not sure about damage).
