Title: I think my PC died. Suggest some older games to pass time :/
Post by: Christo on August 26, 2013, 12:15:19 am
So yeah, few days ago my PSU went apeshit and I'm not totally sure but there is a high chance that it fried some, if not all of my major components. I'll take it to the service tomorrow so more experienced people can see it too, but I think that's what happened.

I just wanted to take the power-plug out just like any other day, when the plastic cover like thingy snapped, broke off in some places, and I managed to pull out all those freaking cables and it was sparking and buzzing like crazy, I had a mini heart attack.
At least it didn't shock me, but when I was unscrewing the little bastards some current left in it almost did, hehe

I replaced the PSU, but everytime I put my Video-card in there the fans go crazy fast and loud, nothing loads. Motherboard VGA port doesn't give a picture either.  :?

I'm using a very basic, non-gaming kind of laptop these days, just to browse youtube (even that lags sometimes), and chat with people, etc. So expect even more forum stalking from me nowadays

So, I'm looking for something older, but not THAT old, Diablo clones or space sandboxes or an RTS, anything really.

So many great suggestions, I can't even decide what to play now, love you guys

I dusted off my Thief disk, still an awesome game, Bafford's manor is like coded into me, it's a part of my childhood. Was awesome to revisit.

Ahh. If your Videocards fans go crazy it means that your PSU isnt supplying it with sufficient power, you need one with more power in it. I had the same stuff. When my PSU fried, it took my motherboard and memorychips with it. Harddrives were magically left unharmed. I was stuck with my lame PC aswell for quite a while. Let me think what I played umm:

Knights of Honor - very much, did multible games even. It was fun.
Thief 2 - Graphics might be aged, but the gameplay definately hasnt.
Diabo 2
Project Zombiod
Warcraft 2 and 3
Red Alert 2(played that in multi with friends)

Cossacks (first one) really good RTS, has a lot of elements that no other RTS series have used (as far as I know).

yup deffy european wars: cossacks - art of war or later expansion/version. 12k max units (!) huge maps, far bigger than you have ever seen in any other RTS. its RTS as it should be but with inferiour gfx (its old)

UFO: enemy unknwon (also known as x-com) is a winner as well. 1, 2, 3 and the newest. other releases = shit.

another game with same type of gameplay is jagged alliance. the first one was for DOS. they recently released a jagged alliance online. im playing it atm (steam version). seems good. its F2P but if you like the game, id say you should spend the money (about €13 AFAIR) and pay for the extra campains and get access to more maps and gear.

naturel selection (HL mod) if you have internet on that old pc :)

and last but not least: whats wrong with counterstrike 1.6? :D

heroes of might and magic whatever version, i like them all.

settlers

civilization

damn i cba writing them all haha

You may also play the first of the series. Both are insta classics. If you haven't played them so far, do it already on this occasion.

The Close Combat Series. Realism, historical accuracy, relatively slow tactical combat in real time, great campaigns from a German perspective. Very stat-based, each soldier's psychological condition is portrayed, can break, go berserk, fall down and cry etc.

*Sid Meier's Pirates!
*Gangsters: Organized Crime
*Tom Clancy's Rainbow Six
*Ultima Online (there's a lot of free servers [called player run shards] out there, I believe Defiance is the biggest with about 600 unique accounts on at any given time).
*Age of Empires

driver... i will think of more later...

Baldurs Gate II: shadows of amn & throne of bhaal... such a time sink, especially if you constantly reroll characters and start over like me :3

Dungeon Keeper I & II... Great games!!! Comical, Unique, Fun, and Challenging (in the later levels)

Fallout Collection (white label)... Includes Fallout, Fallout 2, and Fallout tactics on one CD... or you can pirate them. Fallout 2 is by far the best out of the three, IMO... Original Fallout was great, but 2 has so many upgrades its hard to go back to Original Fallout once you play 2.

Descent Freespace & Freespace 2... awesome spaceship flying game... Fast paced flying... quick dogfights as well as humongous capital ships... Loved those games.

Yeah this thing is a potato, if I want to start Hotline Miami, it gives a BSOD

And It can't handle most 3D applications.

Also I've taken the PC to the service, guy in there was like oÓ, but I told him to at least check what happened to it and call.

We'll see lol

Gangsters: Organized Crime and Sid Meiers: Pirates! can entertain me for weeks

Also suggest pirating Feeding Frenzy, it's a very low resolution game, but you are basically a fish and you eat other fish (and you grow bigger through the levels).  There's two games, and each one has about 100 levels.  It's actually a lot of fun (and some adult arcades around here have the game there too, and I always kick ass and win a bunch of tickets on it).

You could try Freecol.
It is a remake of the old Colonization (similar to Civ) with decent sprite graphics and a few new options.
Running it should be no problem. It is written in Java though and has some problems (maybe too little memory) in late game when there are many units in the field.

Fallout tactics, while being very different to 1&2, is still a pretty good game aswell. It is more combat based, less quests and more tactical (as the name implies wololo)

I specifically refrained from advising Tactics, because thinking of its performance on my older PC's, it seems to put very much graphical strain on an outdated rig.

Gratz. Gotta be a huge relief. This thread is still a goldmine for you though. Try the games mentioned if you ever run out of gaming material.
