In my opinion strat rounds should last 3-4 months max.
My reasons? Firstly people wont be afraid to commit to war, why afraid? well if a clan had committed and lost in this incarnation of strat they would have to wait 6-12 months to be a major force again.
Secondly as it stands surviving factions have way too many troops to ever be totally defeated and nearly all armies are running around in full lordly plate. It makes it pretty dull.
3-4 months with the current voting system should be enough to get some great medium armour large scale wars. If we go back to epic AI peasant battles where clans have to actually take fiefs then 6+ months may be a nice timescale :P
What do you guys think?

How long did 1, 2 and 3 last?
What's the point of restarting if nothings changed?
It would be better to change the mechanics so troop stacking wasn't so effective.

Are people afraid to commit to war?
I don't know what the situation is in NA but this doesn't appear to be the case in EU, If anything the same war would just continue to the next strat making a 1-2 month gap between the sweet sweet EXP we get.
IMO strat should be restarted when there is something that needs changing not because it's been 4 months.

and so the only reason anyone bothers to continue with strat is for sweet sweet xp? What about actually having wars you can realistically win? :P

Strat takes a lot of time and devotion to build a big successful faction.
If you added all the work of trading, recruiting, travel time, fighting at shitty times to defend your fiefs/trade... Then took away the Exp (or at least most). Do you really think the leaders will go through it all again? All the micro-management, time and energy just to know in 3/4 months it will just be deleted..
Also have you seen this thread http://forum.meleegaming.com/general-discussion/do-you-play-strat-for-xp/
The general consensus is people play strat for the Exp

Obviously yes, there is a reason people still bother with strat even now, if it wasn't the case the devs would have quitted developing Strategus by now.
Having a shorter strategus would allow for a variation of different out come and a lot more battle being enjoyable, and also more clans coming in over time, thought i'm sure Osiris ment a reset after each round, instead of a complete remove of Strategus.
-
Majority of the players only play for xp.
Those few that play for other reasons, are the ones actually playing strat, the others just confused mercing in battles with playing strategus
3-4 month rounds sound a lot more fun, more medium sized wars, players are forced to act faster, and an economical war might be possible.
Apostates have not really been trading in a few months now i think, and absolutely 0 since last war started, yet i have gear (shiny shiny shiny) for each troop i have + enough upkeep for months...

[22:33] <Tydeus> strat should just be reset every 3 months
[22:33] <_Osiris_> ya
[22:33] <Tydeus> it's always most enjoyable pre-heavy armor
[22:33] <_Osiris_> i made a post about that a while back
[22:34] <Tydeus> chadz, reset strat
[22:34] <Tydeus> I would actually play strat again if that happened
[22:34] <_Osiris_> ima bump with your quote :P
[22:34] <Tydeus> lol

with the current voting system
No, no this shit again :!:

No, no this shit again :!:
Indeed, the voting sucks :?
I think we got dhirim by 1 vote this round...
-
No, no this shit again :!:
i would prefer AI battles like the old days but that would mean a longer strat :P my idea was 3 months if we have to have voting and 6 months if we can fight AI
-
No, no this shit again :!:
why not? greys are bigest strat faction
-
Get the fief for free, without any effort is not rather cool  We should improve the AI fief manager system from previous strat rounds (for example adding a commander who can buy equipment and choose a roster. Or something in that way, but it's a discussion for another topic).
-
The aim was always 6 months but there are always problems that need fixing which means things get delayed.
I think though that with a better voting system at the start and a few tweaks (max on PP and 1/3 rule fix) then Strat could finally be in a position where it can simply be reset whenever without any desperate need to fix mechanics.
-
but why voting? i dont see the point of it except to remove a large part of the fun when it comes to the AI battles
-
I think even 6 months will be too much. 3-4 rounds per year sounds good, it will be short enough that battles happen with mixed gear and not like now where every army looks the same and is equipped in a standard full plated outfit. Heavy armor will actually mean something in shorter rounds.

AI battles were easily abused and were a large part of the issue of steam rolling by large clans and alliances.
The whole point of voting is to get small clans on the map from day 1 giving them a chance to compete, whilst creating uncertainty for large clans, making them more cautious. In this voting worked perfectly. The problem with it was the ridiculous micromanagement needed on voting day. It would also be nice if clans had a bit less control over where to vote for so that each strat round didn't always end up with the same clans in the same places.
