Title: Need "untubed" FPS suggestions (old or new)
Post by: chadz on August 16, 2013, 05:02:46 pm
So, let's see what you people know about games. I want something like an FPS.. BUT! not a tubed/linear level design. Which means there should be no strict level design. Having RPG elements would be a bonus. Also, I'm interested in singleplayer / PC only.
Let's see what examples I can come up with myself, in no particular order: Far Cry 3 Red Faction Guerilla (which was actually pretty cool) Operation Flashpoint/ArmA GTA to some extent deus ex The saboteur ...
extend the list, surprise me

"The Godfather" Obviously a game based on the series of movies.
It has similar game-play aspects as GTA but it remains somewhat loyal to the story of The Godfather.
EDIT: OPPSIE. This is a third person. I kept thinking "Shooter" in general.

Far Cry 1 & 2. Crysis. Fallout 3 & New Vegas. Borderlands. Mafia 1 & 2. STALKER.
And, if you never had the chance to play it and don't mind very old games, you should try Outcast (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Outcast_%28video_game%29). It's the game that impacted me the most.

System Shock 1 and Just Cause 2, although something feels wrong about naming those in the same sentence.

If looking for a classic FPS, the there's the sequel to Rise of the Triad which features fairly classic level design inspired by RotT, Doom, etc.

I enjoyed borderlands, it's an FPS-RPG type of game, and has pretty large open environments (not counter-strike-esque maps). The saboteur is a great game, but if you're computer can't run it very well you'll never be able to finish a racing mission (the clock counts down time no matter how slow your computer is running). So "time" could really be going about half speed in game, but the timer is counting down as if your car is going at full speed.

Those are all more or less completely linear games.
Come to think of, there aren't that many open-ended FPS games, apart from what chadz and Patoson already mentioned (STALKER FTW). Perhaps some of the older strategy/FPS hybrids fit in this category, though the FPS element in those is kind of gimped.
I can add A.I.M. and A.I.M.2 to this list - rather obscure, but good russian made games, where you control a gliding thingy around in first person, it is very open-ended and sandboxy. IIRC, Clive Barker's Undying was somewhat open-ended? Also, The Elder Scroll games somewhat fit into this?

Completely forgot - Xenus: White Gold, fits in this category more than any other game mentioned so far. From the moment you start the game, you've got the entire game area to explore freely, with no limitations. It is a true FPS game with plenty of RPG elements (inventory, stats, skills, etc.) It has its flaws though.

It is not a perfect game from what I heard, although it does fit your description.

I had tons of fun with Scarface, the game is fucking good, and you have the bonus of listening every once and a while "FUCK THIS" or "FUCK YOU" or "SUCK MY COJONES"
Fucking epic game, I recommend it with closed eyes
You can sell coke, steal banks, steal armoured cars and a lot more shit

Ahh "Xenus" also known as "Boiling point: Road to hell". Played quite a bit of the first game. Xenus: White Gold is a sequel to it. Both games have an insane ammount of flaws, but if you can get past em the payoff is extremely enjoyable. I think the original game is in russian or something. Cause the voices were given to the characters by people with silly english accents in both games. But yes, this might just be what you are looking for. It is free roam by every way. The world is insanely large for that too, with multible factions to do jobs for. Both are quite alright games.

GTA!!!! - What more do you need... Just replay Vice City (no cheats!!)
How about Assassin's Creed (any of them)
Later ones have more free roaming/side missions/weapon options etc

Other people have already suggested it, but just to make sure, you should definitely give the stalker games a shot. Call of Pripyat just got a new update to one of it's best mods in Misery 2.0 and that shit is great. And really frustrating. But absolutely worth your time if that's what you're looking for

S.T.A.L.K.E.R - both SoC and CoP, skip CS
Metro last light - ok it's a semi linear title, but still is a kickass game
The Shadow Warrior reboot - for you old people
Fallout New Vegas - skip fallout 3 it's not a actual Fallout game

Dishonored is also pretty untubed. Although the storyline is strictly linear, within an area, you are usually free to choose your own way (sewers, rooftops, backdoor, etc.).

Ah, yes, i actually meant the first game, Boiling Point, forgot the name and google gave me the 2nd title first.

Absolutely underrated game. Atmosphere is really good, story fits the Honk Kong setting perfectly and the hand-to-hand combat is fun!
And Borderlands 2 all day. There just is no other shooter with better implemented rpg-elements and creativity!
I mean... Just watch this trailer for one of the DLCs and tell me it's not glorious:

Darkfall Online (Unholy Wars).
+ Kind of an MMO FPS with full player looting, big open world, crafting, player cities, player housing, player trading, dungeons etc. + Fast paced pvp with different play styles + 3 stats to manage during combat, different abilities to perform based on your situation + Greek?
- Pretty shitty grind (180 kill quests to level up etc). Takes no lifing to a new level although its not as bad as the first game - unreliable/unprofessional dev team - Questionable design choices - Monthly fee - Can be very boring when not pvping/lots of downtime

Sounds like you would like S.T.A.L.K.E.R.
Edit: it has already been mentioned a couple of times, upvoted accordingly

Oh, remembered another one: Mercenaries 2: World in Flames. It is a third person shooter, but it is completely open-ended. Dunno about the first game, that one is not for the PC.

Oh my, never heard of that - how the hell did they ruin this perfect franchise...
Beats me. I played all Commandos including Strike Force, just as I was getting into it I encountered a bug on some mission and I was unable to complete it......that was the last I've ever played Commandos. :P Also played all Desperados games plus Robin Hood (the one similar to these games). Good times when I was able to enjoy single player games. :P

open world + fps + rpg elements in random order :
1) Fallout 3 + ton of mods (most enjoyable for me) 2) Borderlands 2 + DLCs + played coop cause singleplayer sucks a bit and you can't laugh at stupid things in ts. 3) S.T.A.L.K.E.R SoC/CoP (sometimes you could get frustrated and rage uninstall) 4) Mafia 1/2 (better the first) 5) The Precursors (it's an all-in-one game with rpg/rts/fps/space sim) 6) Saint's Row The Third (if you wanna laugh without drugs/alchool) - preferably in co-op

This is all you need, it has tons of user made total conversion mods and missions, pretty much every war/conflict is covered by the modders, endless stuff to play with.
And if rpg elements are your thing, try this survival mission http://www.ofpec.com/missions_depot/index.php?action=details&id=5 It has voice acting and the guy spend many years on it, wayyy much better than the campaigns.

Maybe the upcoming Splinter Cell Blacklist could be of interest. Not really a FPS, I know, it's back to the roots finally and way more stealthy than the last 2...
Pre-ordered it because I have very hopes for this one and the reviews of the console versions proof me right for now. Way morelike part 1 to 3... Gonna be awesome

Borderlands 1 is much more an FPS than Borderlands 2, which although it has FPS finish, is based around equipment, builds, skills and damage types. For example, Mass Effect (the first one anyway) always seemed closer to an FPS than a RPG during combats, because guns actually behave like guns more or less, and because most things you encounter die quickly enough for aiming skill to matter.
Much of the old FPS games out there remained very good (actually in many ways vastly superior to the best single player shooters of the last decade) and with playable graphics but few were not linear.
Anyway what's the point of non-linearity in a FPS besides scenario quality ? To me the point is shooting things :s
I also recommend Sleeping Dogs but it's really not an FPS at all. You'll be using guns about 1% of the time because it's Hong Kong, not the USA. Hand to hand combat is nice but has AC guard mob syndrome. Finally the worst vehicule handling of any GTA-like I played (considering I played L.A. Noire which has horrible driving, I'm not saying this lightly).

S.T.A.L.K.E.R
and evern though its rather linear, the Shadow warrior reboot is gonna wreck all the anus

Because that game deserves all the praise and much more

I just bought "Sir, you are being hunted", it is a very unique game. You try to survive by avoiding robots and eating food. You can also find weapons, cook food, search for loot, etc. It has a very nice game design and it is like an exploration game FPS. The only objective is to look for parts and then you can do whatever you want.
You go across five islands looking for parts, either blasting your way through, or being stealthy and setting traps and hiding. It is rather unforgiving though because you can only save at a few locations and you die easily. I'm not sure if it's worth $20 right now since it's still in development but why not give it a go.
